Grand Vezier Rüstem Pasha Mosque Istanbul Turkey by BK Bazhe.com
Rüstem Pasha Mosque -
Rüstem Pasha Mosque is located in Hasırcılar Çarşısı (Strawmat Weavers Market) in Eminönü, Istanbul. Designed by Ottoman imperial architect Mimar Sinan. Built 1561 for Grand Vizier Rüstem Pasha, a Croat from Bosnia (Opuković). He served as the Grand Vizier of Suleiman the Magnificent. The mosque is one of the most famous for its large quantities of exquisite İznik tiles, which cover facade of the porch, mihrab, minbar, walls, columns, etc. These tiles exhibit the use of a tomato-red color characteristic of the early Iznik period and no other mosque in Istanbul makes such a lavish use of these tiles.

rustem pasha mosque interior, istanbul
The Rustem Pasha mosque is not nearly as well known as the Blue Mosque or the Sulemaniye Mosque. Susan had been there with Angela on her first trip to Istanbul. This time, we had a spot of trouble finding our way in, but we enjoyed watching some urban football take place in the alley containing the entrance we knew about. The entrance concealed behing the cafe was more popular.

Rüstem Pasha Mosque (Rüstem Pasa Camii), Istanbul, Turkey
Rüstem Pasha Mosque (Rüstem Pasa Camii), Istanbul, Turkey Designed by the Ottoman imperial architect, Mimar Sinan for the Grand Vizier Damat Rüstem Pasha (who was married to one of Suleiman the Great’s daughters) and built after his death in 1561, Rüstem Pasha Mosque features tiles produced in the western Anatolian town of Iznik which, at this time, had became a centre for the production of ceramics. Initially the colours, turquoise and cobalt blue were used but later in the 16th century, sage green and pale purple were introduced. These were then replaced by the use of a red colour and a brighter emerald green. By the 17th century the quality of the pottery and tiles was poor and they were no longer used. These different colours are featured on the tiles both inside and on the facade of the mosque. On Friday the crowds can flow out on to the terrance and the Mihrab (the concave recess in the centre of the photo) shows the worshippers the direction of Mecca

Who Was Rustem Pasha?
Rüstem Pasha Opuković (Turkish pronunciation: [ɾysˈtem paˈʃa]; Ottoman Turkish: رستم پاشا; c. 1500 -- 10 July 1561) was an Ottoman statesman. He served as the grand vizier of sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Rüstem Pasha is also known as Damat Rüstem Pasha (the epithet damat meaning bridegroom to the Ottoman dynasty) because of his marriage to one of the sultan's daughters.
Of Croatian descent, Rüstem Pasha was born in Skradin. He was taken as a child to Constantinople, where he built a military and bureaucracy career. On 26 November 1539, he married Mihrimah Sultan, a daughter of Suleiman the Magnificent. Rüstem Pasha held the title Grand Vizier twice, first from 1544--1553 and second from 1555--1561, until his death. As Grand Vizier, he collected vast wealth, much of it through bribes. However, the bribes in his time were moderate, and he spent his wealth raising public buildings, mosques, and charitable foundations. At the time of his death in Constantinople on 10 July 1561, his personal property included 815 lands in Rumelia and Anatolia, 476 mills, 1700 slaves, 2,900 war horses, 1,106 camels, 800 Qur'ans, etc.

Mosque of Suleyman The Magnificent, Istanbul, Turkey
It isn't a long or difficult walk from the Spice Market/Egyptian Bazaar over to Suleymaniye Mosque, arguably, one of Istanbul's best known sights. But it is, uphill.
Suleymaniye Mosque was built on one of Istabul's seven hills in 1550 by the order of the Sultan Suleyman and designed by the great Ottoman architect, Sinan. Sinan's architecture can be seen all over Istanbul in more than 300 major structures including Hamams.
Beware!! When we attempted to visit, the mosque was closed for restoration and Suleymans tomb is closed on Mondays. A double whammy... Oh well, the exercise did us good and we did get to see the outside.
