Ep11 - Xmas on the boat
This is our first Christmas on board as a cruising live-aboard. It's also our first xmas in the warm, where you can go swimming in the sea on Christmas morning and have a BBQ in the afternoon.
There are over 50 cruisers celebrating xmas with us at YPC marina Cartagena. It's a great atmosphere with a very international group of sailors.
We also take the chance to go on a road trip just before Xmas into the Sierra Nevada mountains just a short drive from the marina.
There are fantastic mountain walks and the magnificent Alhambra palace in Granada which was truly stunning.
SAUSAGE ROLLS
This is a recipe that celebrity cheif Nigel Barden came up with for BBC Radio 2 some years ago, it's by far the best recipe for sausage rolls I've found. Everyone loves them!
Here's the recipe, Judy did twice this amount in the film.
packet 320g rolled puff pastry + 1 egg for glazing
Filling:
400g sausage meat
1/2 red onion
1Tbl spoon olive oil
45g pistachios
25g dried cranberrys or goii berrys
1/2 tsb ground cinnamon,
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp ground sumac
salt & pepper
Finely chop the onions and softly fry in oil until caramelised. Mix all the ingredients together. Place on the rolled out pastry, roll and cut to required size. Glaze with beaten egg.
Cook at 200 degrees `C until golden.

OUR ADVENTURE:
We are sailing slowly around the world in our classic cutter rigged sailboat 'Fair Isle'. With the children leaving home we decided to sell our house in the UK and buy a boat in Holland. After two years refitting our Hans Christian 48T we have now set off a world voyage.
We are retiring early because we want to attempt this voyage in good health and while we're fit and strong enough to really enjoy it. We will have to work a bit as we go until we can draw our pensions and we honestly don't know how well that will work. In our real lives we are journalists and filmmakers so it was only natural for use to document our travels by filming the journey. We aim to produce a professional standard vlog of the whole trip and try to give the viewer a real insight into what it's like to live and travel on a 48 foot sailboat.
Our first aim is to sail South. After a winter getting iced in on the Markermeer in the Netherlands Judy insisted on warmer weather! So if you start from Episode 1 you will see us setting off from Eastbourne in the UK and travelling along the South Coast to Plymouth to enter a rally called ARC Portugal.
Our first goal is to reach the Mediterranean and that means sailing across the infamous Bay of Biscay. This was a very good test for our boat as the bay lived up to it's fearsome reputation and split the whole fleet with a force 10 storm. Storm Miguel cut through our path and meant we had to run to mainland Spain to escape the massive seas and fearsome winds. Six boats couldn't make it in time and spent several very uncomfortable days at sea. The fleet had several broken boats, but thankfully no injured people. And this was just Episode 2!
The excitement continued for the rest of our trip to the Med. Dolphins played in our bow wave, we sampled fantastic local foods and wines, great port in Porto! We found some beautiful anchorages and visit some wonderful historic places like Lisbon in Portugal, Cadiz in Spain and the fascinating port of Gibraltar.
We will show you what it's like to winter in the Mediterranean, how much it all costs and give hints and tips on where to go how to save money with your boat and the places you stay. We are also talking to other sailors. After years of broadcasting journalism we know how to get peoples stories and we regularly film other sailors to show their boats and lifestyle as well as ours. We can always learn from others.
Our long term plan is to spend a few years in the Mediterranean, on our list of place we want to visit are; Mallorca, Malta, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Italy, Tunisia, to name but a few!
When we feel we've seen the best of what the Med has to offer we will cross the Atlantic to the Caribbean, we are hoping we can fit in a trip to the Azores on the way.
From there we want to go through the Panama Canal to the South Pacific. Really looking forward to that!

Obidos Lagoon Panorama iPhone4s: Silver Coast Portugal by Nigel Harper
On a dull misty morning (whilst shooting a time lapse sequence, the clicking shutter can be heard) I panned my iPhone across the entrance to the Obidos Lagoon. You can see and hear the Nikons shutter firing every 4 seconds. The view is across the estuary towards Foz do Arelho and I'm shooting from the Bom Sucesso side. It takes by car, 25 minutes to travel around the Lagoon by road (25klms) and 55 minutes by Mountain Bike on trails and road flat out!
Kite Surfers Obidos Lagoon Portugal Photography by Nigel Harper ABIPP AMPA
Foz do Arelho's fabulous beach & lagoon is the ideal place for the local Kite Surfers. It's the ideal place for photography too. These images were shot in March 09 & November 010, using a Nikon D300 and 300S with Nikon 18-200mm lens + Sigma's 'Bigma' a 50 - 500mm super tele zoom, and a Nikon 10.5mm Fisheye. A 4x Grey Grad filter was also employed to keep detail in the sky of some shots.

Sherlock Holmes - Pursuit to Algiers (1945) | Starring Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce | HD
The twelth in a series of fourteen films to star Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as the Twentieth Century's most iconic iteration of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, respectively.
When the king of tiny Rovina is assassinated, their prime minister approaches renowned British detective Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) to escort Prince Nikolas (Leslie Vincent) home to assume power. Holmes foils a sabotage plot against the prince and, presenting Nikolas as the nephew of his friend Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce), the trio sails to Alexandria, Egypt. On board, singer Sheila (Marjorie Riordan) acts suspiciously, and three strangers boarding in Lisbon, Portugal, seem to know Nikolas.
This feature is presented in restored high definition with no advertisement breaks, as it deserves to be seen.
Three Cunard Queens in Lisbon 6th May 2014
Three days before the Southampton rendezvous, the entire fleet met in Lisbon for the first time. I flew over for it with my Norwegian friend Oskar and were on the press boat for the arrivals and ceremony thanks to Fernando Santos of GlobalSeaTravel. We had a brief visit to QM2 then watched them sail from land. Silver Whisper, Rotterdam and Ruby Princess were also calling, with every ship heading to Southampton (though only the Queens and Rotterdam arrived together). The Portuscale Cruises vessels, Porto and Lisboa, were docked, making a whopping 8 ships in that beautiful city. This video also includes those other ships. Silver Whisper anchored before moving to berth after Rotterdam and Ruby Princess sailed as she was staying overnight.
SeeSense Toshiba HD-1 UnderwaterClip_1_1080p
In preparation for a scientific research project next year a Toshiba IK-HD1 camera has been successfully tested to a depth of 4,300 metres (14,000 feet).
The test took place in the Atlantic Ocean, off the Canary Islands, from a specially fitted research ship sailing from Lisbon, Portugal.
All components were installed into a titanium housing fitted with a port consisting of a 25mm thick block of optically flat glass.
The HD images produced show a stainless steel weight suspended from the rig to gauge its distance from the ocean floor. The weight is seen bouncing along the ocean floor as waves move the research ship back on the surface.
The Toshiba camera, cable, lens, and remote control unit were supplied by Nigel Paine, MD of SeeSense.

Kite Surfers of the Obidos Lagoon Silver Coast Portugal
Music from The YouTube music library -
'Marianas - Quincas Moreira & 'By The Sword' - Ethan Meixsell.
At last, I've managed to sort out some of my favourite video & stills of these amazing Kite Surfers. The seaside village of Foz do Arelho situated on Portugals Silver Coast and the beautiful Obidos Lagoon provides the perfect location!
Some of the stills date from 2009, but all video was shot on a Nikon D500 September 2018 and a Fuji XT3 on March 2019.
The strong winds we had in late March are Nirvana to Kite Surfers and for several days they were having loads of fun sailing through the sky.
Very strong gusty winds made it difficult to keep the hand held shots steady, but certainly added to the fun!
Cameras used - Nikon D300s, D610, D500 + 10mm fisheye & 28-300mm Nikkor lenses.
Fuji XT3 with 18-55mm & 55-200mm lenses.

The Last Hand Drawn Ferry on the Rio Grande in Los Ebanos, TX
This is the only remaining hand drawn Ferry carrying vehicles and pedestrians back and forth across the Rio Grande.
LOS EBANOS, TEXAS. Los Ebanos is off Farm Road 886 half a mile north of the Rio Grande in extreme southwestern Hidalgo County. The first recorded Spanish visit into the area was in the 1740s, when an ancient ford south of the area was crossed by explorers and colonists led by José de Escandón. Los Ebanos was reportedly established by early Mexican settlers, who named the community for the abundance of ebony trees in the area. The ford was a popular crossing during the Mexican War in 1846. During the Civil War, on December 28, 1862, armed Mexican thieves crossed into Los Ebanos and attacked a Confederate wagontrain; three teamsters died, and all the goods were lost. Texas Rangersqv crossed the ford in 1874 to pursue cattle rustlers. Los Ebanos was the site of an engagement between United States customs officers and cattle thieves in November 1875. The Los Ebanos post office was opened in 1910, and in 1913 Dr. Alfred J. J. Austin established a ranch, brickyard, gravel pit, and pharmacy there. The community's population was estimated at 200 in 1920, and by 1936 Los Ebanos comprised a school, several dwellings, two churches, and seven businesses. During the 1920s and 1930s Los Ebanos was again popular as a crossing for smugglers, who brought alcohol from Mexico. Its population remained at 200 in 1946, when one business was reported in the community. A ferry connecting Los Ebanos to Ciudad Díaz Ordaz, Tamaulipas, was established in 1950. At that time it was the only government-licensed hand-pulled ferry on a United States international boundary. An inspection station was also established then. In 1964 Los Ebanos had a population of 100 and four businesses. A colonia formed in Los Ebanos during the late 1960s and early 1970s had 150 dwellings and an estimated population of 825 in 1976; by 1986 it had decreased to ten dwellings and a population of forty-five. In 1990 the population of Los Ebanos was estimated at 100. The population reached 403 by 2000. -Texas State Historical Association.
