Heathland Golf Heritage – From London to Central Wisconsin
Sand Valley Golf Resort is a continuation of founder Mike Keiser's mission to bring Golf As It Was Meant To Be to the United States.
Sand Valley Golf Resort pays homage to the great heathland courses of London, namely Sunningdale, Swinley Forest, Walton Heath, and St. George's Hill. Built on sandy soil with low lying heathland vegetation (scrubby oaks and pines, heather, bearberry, blueberry, kinnikinnick and more) these great Heathland courses were built to bring the drama and playing conditions of links golf to the inland heathland properties close to the bustling London city center. Similar to the great links courses, these properties feature dramatic sand dunes, windy playing conditions, unusual bounces from firm fairways, and a multitude of strategic playing options. Having played these great heathland courses we know how enchanting they can be and we hope to bring the same level of fun and enchantment to the great heathland property we have at Sand Valley Golf Resort.

A New Kind of Golf Course in America - Mike Keiser Interview (2017)
Today I'm chatting with Mike Keiser, entrepreneur, golf course developer, and industry rival to a certain current president.
He's a seasoned entrepreneur who’s had success in multiple industries. We’re discussing his tips for cultivating an entrepreneurial vision as well as his path into the golf course game. (It’s an insane story!)
Click here for my blog post detailing the debate about the economic and environmental impact of golf courses:
Mike Keiser’s courses are modeled after Scottish golf courses and how they differ from the typical American courses. Find out what that means in the video!
Keep an eye out for his latest golf course, Sand Valley, which recently opened in Wisconsin:

Veteran Gets Her Driver's License Suspended for Unpaid Tickets
Janice, an Air Force veteran, knows the hardship of living with a driver’s license suspended for unpaid traffic tickets. She cannot get a higher-paying job as a caseworker working with people leaving the criminal justice system that would enable her to pay her tickets and move on with her life. Even if Janice could get the job, she wouldn’t be able to perform it without a driver’s license. It would literally take her hours each day, at a minimum, to travel by foot and bus to the homes of clients spread out across three counties that span forty miles.
Before banning people from the roads for unpaid tickets, the South Carolina DMV doesn’t provide a hearing or notice of how to avoid suspension when a person can’t pay. In fact, the DMV does not determine whether people actually have the money to pay. The result is a wealth-based system in which a suspension ends only when a person pays in full all traffic fines and additional DMV fees charged for having a suspended license. This means impoverished people lose their ability to drive—which they need to find and keep their jobs—unless they divert money from rent, utilities, health care, and other needs to pay for their driver’s licenses.
To make matters worse, neither the DMV nor the South Carolina Office of Motor Vehicle Hearings (OMVH)—the only state agency with the power to review suspensions—provides any hearing at which a person can explain that their driver’s license should not be suspended because they cannot pay. Figuring out how to request a hearing is a byzantine process that a layperson cannot hope to navigate. Moreover, when the ACLU submitted a request for Janice, the OMVH responded by saying that she would have to pay an additional $800 just to get a hearing.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Wisconsin Rapids (#613)
[Original Airdate: April 6, 2017]
Smack dab in the middle of the state, we found Wisconsin Rapids. True, it’s not hard to find, but it is hard to leave! Wisconsin Rapids is a paper making town, and has been almost 200 years. While this kind, warm town is heavy with history, there are loads of current things to experience, and literally tons of cranberries to be harvested! That’s why we came. Wisconsin is the largest producer of cranberries in the world, and John had never been in a bog – ever! The owners of Glacial Lake Cranberries treated us to an amazing experience that almost left John speechless (almost, but thank goodness, not quite!). But after we experienced all things cranberry, we learned that the unique geology in the center of our state allowed for the building of what is quickly becoming a world renowned destination for golf. And with a name like “Rapids” you know we spent some time along the river. Wisconsin Rapids is gorgeous. We hated to leave, but it was the perfect place to wrap up our sixth season.
