Things To Do In Charleston SC
Also posted on This is a quick tour around Charleston South Carolina showing some of the things to do in Charleston that await visitors to this magnificent and historic city.
Charleston South Carolina, A city of history, hospitality, and a heaping dose of good ole southern charm.
Hi I'm Carl
In this short video you'll see Charleston come alive and you'll understand why one magazine recently voted it the number one tourist destination in all of America.
Something I've known for years.
One of the best ways to learn about Charleston's past is to take a tour.
And one of the fun ways to tour the city.... is in a horse drawn carriage.
That's exactly what I did on a recent visit.
As Kevin, supplied the.... uh horsepower, our knowledgable guide entertained and informed us with many interesting tidbits regarding Charleston's rich history, a city whose beginning dates back more than a hundred years before the founding of America.
Add in the picture perfect weather we enjoyed, and you've got the recipe for an experience that's hard to beat.
If exercise is more your style, one of the many walking tours may better suit your needs.
Charleston's downtown business and residential districts are compact and perfect for a relaxed and entertaining walk as you appreciate the history and beauty all around you.
At some point in your visit, you'll probably find yourself meandering through City Market, as will most of Charleston's 4 million annual visitors.
This Charleston landmark has been around since the 1790's.
Today from among the hundreds of local vendors, you can find just the right item to purchase and keep as a souvenir or to give as that special gift.
The city of Charleston proper boasts 90 properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with another 96 in the remaining parts of the county.
As you witness the variety of these restored treasures, you'll appreciate why Charleston was considered the cultural center of the antebellum South.
Since we're talking historical homes, make sure you stroll along East Battery street toward White Point Garden.
You'll enjoy the beauty of the magnificent row of stately antebellum homes that line the street to your right as Charleston harbor splashes against the battery seawall on which you walk.
Charleston's visitors also enjoy the city by water. There are numerous Harbor tours where one can get a better sense of Charleston's skyline, and with an evening cruise, enjoy a beautiful sunset as well.
Another harbor treat is to view the Ravenel bridge up close and personal. This Charleston landmark doesn't have the history that attracts so many to the Holy City, having been completed less than a decade ago, but it makes up for its newcomer status by its sheer size, spanning two and a half miles in length, and rising to the majestic height of 575 feet.
This 8 lane engineering marvel connects downtown Charleston to Mt Pleasant,
and one day a year, 40 thousand runners use it for their own personal highway in what's known as the Cooper River Bridge Run.
And who could visit Charleston and not take the boat to Fort Sumter, the scene of the first battle of the war between the States.
After a 30 minute narrated cruise, you'll step foot on the very soil where America's most bloody war began.
Once on site National Park Service Rangers will provide more details of this regrettable episode in our nation's history.
Charleston is also known for its Plantations.
You'd be hard pressed to fully understand what makes downtown Charleston what it is without visiting and learning more about the role played by these historic and massive plantations.
And while we're out and about, this is the perfect time for me to tell you that there are no less than 5 beaches within 25 miles of Charleston.
Whether your accommodations are on the beach, or you simply come to spend a peaceful sun drenched day, it's the perfect complement to your downtown Charleston adventure.
Did I hear someone say shopping?
Just so you know, King street was recently chosen as one of the 10 best shopping streets in the United States.
Whether its antiques, art, or fashion, you'll find it all.. I say... shop on!
All this activity will surely make you hungry enough to eat a horse...... oops..... sorry Kevin, my bad......
whether its fine dinning or various other award winning eateries, from barbecue to bistro, from cafe to cafeteria, from tavern to tearoom, and others too numerous to list, Charleston has it all.
Then when daylight turns to darkness, you'll have to take a break from your non stop Charleston adventure.
Charleston's travelers have access to some of the most elegant accommodations.
Whether you're looking for historic charm, a private hideaway, or unparalleled luxury, your nights in Charleston will be as perfect as your days.
Budget conscious families also have many alternatives from which to choose.

A short 4 hour drive from Greenville, South Carolina is the beautiful, historic city of Charleston, one of the first colonial cities of the thirteen colonies. After arriving late on a Friday night, we had some drinks, partied up for a fresh day around the city. Saturday morning we took a nice carriage tour around the hot spots of the city, walked around to check out some artifacts, the waterfront, and have lunch. Tight on time we set off for Folly Beach to not only take a dip in the water but see for our own eye the Morris Island lighthouse, a lighthouse sitting out several yards at sea. Returning to Charleston, we grabbed dinner and bar hopped for more drinks, one places uniquely being a former church turned bar.
Sunday morning we had a quick bite for brunch and walked around the battery to see some dolphins pop up out of the harbor. From there we caught a ferry to the Civil War fort, Fort Sumter which sits at the end of the harbor. This is the very fort that began the Civil War firing the first shot. After returning to the port we quickly grabbed lunch and crossed the beautiful Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and headed back to Greenville. This was my first time to Charleston, and I am sure it will not be my last time. :)

Dear Charleston
Dear Charleston
On June 17, 2015, one of the greatest tragedies the city of Charleston, South Carolina has ever seen took place. A lone gunman entered Emanuel AME Church on Calhoun Street and opened fire during a mid-week Bible study, killing 9, injuring 1, and leaving 2 survivors. Following the arrest of the shooter, the victim’s families openly forgave the killer in court.
A daughter of Ethel Lance, one of the deceased, said I will never be able to hold her again, but I forgive you, and have mercy on your soul. You hurt me. You hurt a lot of people but God forgives you, and I forgive you.
On more than one occasion, the people of the city of Charleston filled the streets with love and support for their brothers and sisters who were grieving.
The love and forgiveness displayed by the families of the victims and the people of the city of Charleston moved a group of individuals to pay tribute to those affected by this tragic event.
This group of volunteers was made up of both friends and strangers from all over the Charleston area. The communities of Summerville, Lincolnville, Goose Creek, West Ashley and Mount Pleasant were all represented.
The multi-cultural group worked together to create this song and accompanying video that represents their recognition of social divisions in the past and racial tensions in current times while highlighting their hope for future unity among all people.
Dear Charleston - Lyrics
Dear Charleston Lord knows you've changed
You used to be divided keeping innocent people in chains
That's in the past but oh no we won't forget - We won’t forget
You've left those days behind we can feel your deep regret
Chorus
Now we stand united hand in hand
We don't see black or white
Just our fellow man
The fight’s not over yet this we understand
It's time to lay our weapons down
And love our brother man love our brother man love our brother man
(Choir Vocalizes) Dear Charleston
(Choir Vocalizes) Dear Charleston
Dear Charleston at a time that you could rage
You've turned the other cheek and turned another page
You won't surrender Lord knows you won't let hate win
You fill your streets with love and start over again start over again start over again
Chorus
Now we stand united hand in hand
We don't see black or white
Just our fellow man
The fight’s not over yet this we understand
It's time to lay our weapons down
And love our brother man love our brother man love our brother man
Dear Charleston
(choir vocalizes ooooooo)
Dear Charleston

River Front Park North Charleston, SC Photography Harassment
this is 2 different times the park ranger is trying to kick me out the park 10am in the morning for provocative filming. The first time he came up to me asking what kind of pictures am i taking saying my photography is provocative. the second time he gets mad and starts saying the photography is provocative again. this video is a clear action of harassment by a city of North Charleston employee. their are not rules against provocative photography the girl in the video has her face blacked out for her protection. you can see what she is wearing from the chest up. I am African-American and the model was African-American alone in the park until the park ranger comes up to us and makes up things that are not going on. i HAVE BEEN FILMING AT THIS PARK FOR 3 YEARS before anything like this has happened. I think that this park ranger has been running people out of the park because nobody comes to the park until after 4 or 5 and the people stay way pass dark.

Charleston, SC: Kiawah Island, Patriots Point & Holiday Festival of the Lights | MOTM VLOG #15
We spent the shortest day of the year in Charleston, South Carolina. We visited Kiawah island, Patriots Point and the Holiday Festival of the Lights in Charleston!
KIAWAH ISLAND
We were told by some fellow campers that there was a dog-friendly beach (in the winter months) on Kiawah Island, and that it was gorgeous! Always willing to take a recommendation, we arrived at Beachwalkers Park at 7:22AM for the sunrise. The island is very developed and I would say “ritzy” – gated communities full of big houses, lots of landscaping, and not a palm frond out of place. But the Beachwalkers Park was quiet in the early morning. We actually got there before the opening time of 10AM, so the huge parking lot (that I’m sure gets quite packed) was empty.
After a short hike along the boardwalk path to the shore, we had a spectacular view of the morning sun! We practically had the place to ourselves, and spent a leisurely hour or so here walking the beach and playing with the dogs.
PATRIOTS POINT MUSEUM
Patriots Point Museum is an awesome place that we would highly recommend if you have any interest in military historic, WWII, or aircraft. If you go, plan to take an entire day here, and maybe even two! The museum is huge as it is comprised of several museums in one location, for one ticket price. (And until Feb 2016, there is a 2-for-1 Groupon for admission!)
The museum consists of:
USS Yorktown – Navy aircraft carrier built for WWII. It has six tour routes from the Flight Deck (with vintage aircraft on display) all the way down to the massive engine rooms that powered this great ship.
USS Laffey – destroyer battleship that supported the D-Day landings at Normandy in 1944
USS Clamagore – submarine used for 30 years in the Cold War
Congressional Medal of Honor Museum (onboard the Yorktown) – beautiful and moving museum that explain the origin of the Medal of Honor and tells the stories of brave recipients of this high honor.
Vietnam War Experience Exhibit – immersive 2.5 acre exhibit
Cold War Sub Memorial - tribute to the dedicated men who served in our naval submarines during the Cold War
HOLIDAY FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS - JAMES ISLAND
Each year the James Island State Park sets up over 3 miles of Christmas lights that viewers can drive through and admire. We did this drive through, and it was amazing! Traffic was horrible, but definitely worth the wait.

Caught on Camera: Ghosts of the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point
It’s no secret that Charleston is one of South Carolina’s most haunted cities. The SCETV production team decided to highlight a place with lots of claims of unexplained paranormal phenomena…the USS Yorktown at Patriots Point.
The USS Yorktown has a long history dating back to World War II. The ship was a safe haven for her crew and now is a symbol of freedom and liberty.
Do you believe in ghosts or do you think this is all just hocus-pocus? Let us know via Facebook and Twitter @palmettoscene.

Mount Pleasant Pier - Charleston South Carolina
Part of the Memorial Waterfront Park complex, the 1250-foot long Mount Pleasant Pier stretches out into Charleston Harbor under the foot of the Arthur Ravenel, Jr. Bridge. The pier’s foundation was created from pared-down pilings from the old Grace Memorial Bridge, and one end of the pier now features an 8,100-square-foot covered pavilion for hosting dances and other events. Visitors can enjoy beautiful views of the bridge and harbor from the pier’s bench swings and shade structures.
Great view of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge/New Cooper River Bridge!
The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, also known as the New Cooper River Bridge, is a cable-stayed bridge over the Cooper River in South Carolina, connecting downtown Charleston to Mount Pleasant. The eight lane bridge satisfied the capacity of U.S. Route 17 when it opened in 2005 to replace two obsolete cantilever truss bridges. The bridge has a main span of 1,546 feet (471 m), the third longest among cable-stayed bridges in the Western Hemisphere. It was built using the design-build method and was designed by Parsons Brinckerhoff.
