Lighting revives Tintoretto’s art - Scuola Grande di S. Rocco, Venice
More info:
The main objectives of the new lighting system designed by the architect Alberto Pasetti Bombardella, are to conserve the artworks, while offering a new experience of them that includes the chance to enjoy an overall view of the room. To achieve this, the project was divided into two macro spheres of intervention: Tintoretto’s great paintings plus the wooden and stone artworks, on one hand, and the hall’s architecture and decorations on the other.
The Scuola di San Rocco played an important role in the history of the city of Venice, especially for the care it offered the sick during epidemics. From the fourteenth century onwards, when the plague struck, the Venetians prayed to San Rocco (St. Roch). The Confraternity and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco was established in 1478. In 1484 Venice was hit by a severe outbreak of the plague and this led to the idea of bringing the remains of St Roch to the city from Voghera where they were said to have been buried.
During the sixteenth century, the Scuola di San Rocco cemented its prestige by giving commissions to some of the great masters, such as Jacopo Robusti - better known as Tintoretto - who worked in the School between 1564 and 1588.

Scuola Grande Di San Rocco – Salone Superiore – Venezia – Audioguida – MyWoWo Travel App

Places to see in ( Venice - Italy ) Scuola Grande di San Rocco
The Scuola Grande di San Rocco is a building in Venice, northern Italy. It is noted for its collection of paintings by Tintoretto, generally agreed to include some of his finest work. The building was the seat of a confraternity established in 1478, named after San Rocco, popularly regarded as a protector against plague. The members of the Confraternity of St. Roch were a group of wealthy Venetian citizens. The site they chose for their building is next to the church of San Rocco which houses the remains of the saint.
In January 1515 the project of the building was entrusted to Bartolomeo Bon, although some authorities assign it to his son Pietro Bon. In 1524 his work was continued by Sante Lombardo, who, in turn, three years later was replaced by Antonio Scarpagnino. Following his death in 1549, the last architect to work on the edifice was Giangiacomo dei Grigi, finishing in September 1560.
The design was similar to other scuole in Venice, characterized by two halls, one at ground floor level, the other at first floor level. The Sala Terra (lower) has a nave and two aisles, with the entrance from the campo outside. From this hall a stair (with a landing surmounted by a dome) led to the upper storey. The Sala Superiore (Upper Hall) was used for meetings of the fellows and had a wooden altar. It provided access to the Sala dell'Albergo, which housed the Banca and the Zonta (the confraternity's supervisory boards).
The Scuola Grande is open daily all the year round, except for Christmas Day and January 1st. The paintings were in need of conservation work, and have been restored by the World Monuments Fund.

Tintoretto Lecture Series, Part 3: Tintoretto Central: The Scuola Grande di San Rocco
Eric Denker, senior lecturer and manager of gallery talks and lectures for adults, National Gallery of Art
On the occasion of the exhibition of Tintoretto: Artist of Renaissance Venice, Eric Denker, senior lecturer at the National Gallery of Art presents a four-part lecture series examining Jacopo Tintoretto’s work in the context of 16th-century Venetian art, history, and culture. In this third lecture, “Tintoretto Central: The Scuola Grande di San Rocco,” held on May 7, 2019, Denker discusses the decorations for the charitable confraternity Scuola Grande di San Rocco, which occupied Tintoretto for more than 25 years. In 1564 his painting San Rocco in Glory won the competition for the central ceiling canvas of the Scuola’s board room. His greatest masterpiece, the 40-foot-wide Crucifixion, was painted the following year. In the 1570s he completed the Old and New Testament cycles for the upper level of the Scuola, and in the 1580s he finished the decoration of the ground floor with scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. In all, Tintoretto executed more than 65 paintings for the brotherhood of the Scuola, a remarkable achievement for the humble cloth dyer’s son.
