The Friendly Invasion
The 'Friendly Invasion' had a significant impact on the lives of both the American airmen who came over to Britain during World War Two, and the local people with whom they built special relationships. This film was created by young people working with The Garage and the 2nd Air Division Memorial Library in Norwich, under the guidance of professional filmmaker Peter Harmer, and tells the story of this truly remarkable period of local history through documentary interviews, archive film, photography and dramatic reconstruction.
The film was created as part of the innovative Heritage Lottery Funded Norfolk's American Connections project, delivered by Norfolk County Council Cultural Services, 2nd Air Division Memorial Library, South Norfolk Council, The Garage and community partners, which celebrated 400 years of historical links between Norfolk and North America through a series of events from July to November 2012.
The featured interviewees are Mike Bailey, Pat Everson, Dennis Kirkham, Malcolm Metcalf, Charles Walker (veteran 445th Bomb Group pilot).

The Friendly Invasion, East Anglia, UK
The Friendly Invasion commemorates the bravery of over 300,000 USAAF servicemen who were in East Anglia during World War II. Their arrival had the biggest landscape and cultural impact of any in our history since the Norman Conquest. This film takes its inspiration from US propaganda film 'Welcome to Britain 1943' - and shows just how much things have changed... for the better!

Between 1942 and 1945, 3 million young American service personnel came to Britain and their presence over a short period of time would have a lasting effect on the communities they visited. This film examines the different types of relationships that were forged between the British public and their American guests at that time.
Some people worked with the Americans, provided them with accommodation, or lived near their camps. Others were affected by the presence of their war machinery, or their music, cinema and dancing. We see how they enjoyed their spare time; how they romanced British girls; the marriages that resulted from these relationships; and their strong bond with British children. It is an unbiased study, examining the bad points as well as the good, including racism. Ultimately, it attempts to recapture the atmosphere of a unique period in British history, based on the bestselling book of the same title.

The Friendly Invasion project - Visit East of England, UK
Visit East Anglia, supported by Visit Britain and its Discover England Fund, is leading on developing The Friendly Invasion product to encourage more visitors to experience the region where over 350,000 US Air Force servicemen were based during World War II.
Their arrival from 1942 created the biggest landscape and cultural impact of any event in the East of England since the Norman Conquest 900 years earlier. The Americans brought with them chewing gum, peanut butter, jazz, Swing, nylons, Coca Cola, and within a short time had created over 100 miles of concrete runways cut into quiet East Anglian farmland.
It was The Friendly Invasion - when the United States changed the East of England forever.
