Patagonia Travel in Chile - tour Torres del Paine, Fjords, Glaciers and more
Patagonia is an area of undescribable natural beauty. Patagonia in Chile is made up of wonders such as the beautiful Torres del Paine National Park, the immense Chilean Fjords and the complex system of rivers and lakes that frame the end of the Andes Mountain range have to be seen to be believed.
Transcript:
As the world grows in population there are just fewer and fewer places where one can really experience one-on-one with nature. Patagonia is one of those places.
We have been married for thirty years and we took our honeymoon to Chile. As part of our story, Chile is in our most beloved photo albums and videos.
From the mere name, Patagonia evokes travel, it evokes wonder and mystery.
Feeling the wind at night that moves your tents gives you the sense that you are quite small in this vastness. Seeing this place and understanding this vastness, it absorbs me, it consumes me.
That's what we feel.

The Van Life! Our Camper Van in Patagonia
Today, we joined the van life!
Greg's Channel:
Here on the Chilean side of Patagonia, we picked up a van from a company called wicked campers and headed out to start our van life adventure.
The plan is to drive some 4,000km round trip from Puerto Varas, Chile to Torres del Paine. It's going to be a pretty epic trip down Patagonia, and the van life is going to be pretty awesome. Our camper, though, is tiny. I mean, it's really small. We're going to get cozy. But, it is nice to have wheels.
On the vlog, our van life got off to a bit of a wet start. The weather in Puerto Varas was nasty and rainy. So, we spent the day stocking up our camper with the essentials. Of course, if you know me, I forgot things, like twice. But, eventually in the rain we made our way down to the Petrohue area and found a place to park the camper van.
I'm so stoked for tomorrow to start the van life experience for real. I'm looking forward to this big Patagonia road trip. It should be an absolutely brilliant experience.

A trip to Chiloé Island in Chile
Isla Grande de Chiloé in Chile is South America’s fifth-largest island and is home to a fiercely independent, seafaring people. It's a popular place to visit especially among Chileans who come to appreciate the island character, the rural landscape, the seafood and the UNESCO churches.

Travel Guide to Chile
As the longest, thinnest country in the world, Chile stretches all the way from the borders with Bolivia and Peru in the north, 4,500ks to Tierra del Fuego in the south, and yet at its widest point it, in the Atacama Desert, is only 400ks across. Sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and the towering Andes, this fascinating Latin American country is home to the world’s driest desert, arguably the continent’s most stunning national park, an impressive wine region and, on Chiloe Island, the home of the potato! An economically sound country that is fast become a first world nation, Chile has a huge amount to offer the modern traveller.
Unless coming in overland, most trips to Chile will start here in the nation’s capital, Santiago.
Although most guidebooks will tell you Santiago is not as exciting at Rio or as elegant and enchanting as Buenos Aires, and should be used only as a gateway to the rest of the country, I feel it is an interesting place to explore for a day or two. Like many large Latin American cities it suffers somewhat from schizophrenic urban design where the city’s impressive colonial past is often dwarfed and obscured by its more ugly modern present; tenement towers and, since its rise as a regional economic powerhouse – Chile has the highest GDP per capita in South America – glass fronted office blocks. But there are still some great sites to check out including the Plaza de Armas, the Palacio Modera, the city’s main museum, and the Mercado Central, where you can enjoy a delicious seafood lunch, beneath a roof that was actually made in Birmingham! Santiago also has some lovely hotels and is famous for its excellent dining.
But Santiago is unlikely to form the main reason for your visit to Chile, that is much more likely to lie either in the far north, in the Atacama region or in the far south in Patagonia.
From Santiago, and starting in the very south of the country in Chilean Patagonia, is Puerto Aranas, entry point for what is arguably the continents most impressive national park, Torres del Paine. Deriving its name from the bull-like horns of the park’s most impressive mountain, Torres del Paine covers a quarter of a million hectares, is home to some spectacular and varied accommodation, and is a great place to hike, horse ride or just enjoy the scenery.
ADD PLENTY OF SHOTS HERE
Moving north, we come to the beautiful Lake District around the towns of Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas. Here, up the Puelo River valley, you can do some wonderful horse riding as well as walking and kayaking. A short distance off the coast you also have Chiloe Island, which along with stunning coastal walks is also famous for being home of the potato. And further still off the coast, in fact more than 2,000 miles into the Pacific Ocean, is the extraordinary Easter Island… a land shrouded in mystery with its dramatic stone head carvings, Easter Island is one of the most remote inhabited islands on the planet.
Heading further north other notable places are the beautiful coastal towns of La Serena and Valparaiso – just a stone’s throw from the capital Santiago – and the wine district of Coquimbo where some of the country’s leading wines are manufacture
And here in the far north of the country, lies the truly extraordinary Atacama Desert. Bordering Bolivia, Peru and Argentina, is a region that’s renowned as being the driest place on earth.
Sitting in the rain shadow of both the Andes and the Chilean Coastal Range, the Atacama Desert is renowned as being the driest place on earth. It is also the region that has been driest for longest, with some suggesting a continuous arid area here dating back at least three million years. Some of the soil has no life at all, a situation NASA has exploited to test instruments for Mars missions. And, due to its otherworldly landscapes, it has been used as a location on numerous space films including Space Odyssey: Voyage to the Planets.
Forming the northern chain of Chile’s ‘Ring of Fire’ the region is framed by a spectacular girdle of volcanoes and plethora of fascinating geographical phenomenon.
A country fast emerging as a first world nation, Chile offers today’s traveller a safe location with some great accommodation, fine dining and world-class wines. But first and foremost she offers some of the most varied and impressive landscapes anywhere on earth.
Petrohue Falls and The Carretera Austral -- Chile Travel Vlog
We started our journey down the Carretera Austral visited Petrohue Falls, and missed the boat.
Greg's Channel:
Day 1 of our journey down the famous Carretera Austral did not go as planned. We started the day off pretty brilliantly. We shot some photos on the Petrohue River and then went to Petrohue Falls to shoot some photos just after sunrise. And, everything was stunning. In fact, this might be the coolest view in all of South America.
We weren't allowed in Petrohue Falls for sunrise for some reason, but even at 9am when we finally got in, it was beautiful. From the falls, you have the incredible Osorno Volcano in the background. I'm not sure there's a more perfect view anywhere. Nature just blows me away.
Leaving Petrohue Falls, we headed south down the Carretera Austral. Unfortunately for us, we didn't realize that the ferry only travels once a day and we missed the boat.
So, we ended up stuck somewhere in Chile called Hornopiren for the night.
On the bright side, where we got stuck was pretty photogenic and we still managed to get out and shoot some photos.
Tomorrow, we continue our journey down the Carretera Austral here in Chile.

Packing for Photography in Patagonia
We're leaving for Patagonia tomorrow... or so we thought.

This morning, Greg finally arrived from Madrid to Buenos Aires. It's good to see the dude, and we spent the morning getting ready for our road trip through Patagonia. The plan, was to get all our packing for Patagonia done and organize ourselves a little bit. Kind of take a chilled out day.
But, without any real warning, we found out that there would be a general strike across Argentina and that our bus the following day to Bariloche was cancelled. So, we had to make a quick decision to either lose a day and stay in Buenos Aires, or jump on the bus to Bariloche that same day.
For me, it wasn't really a question. We couldn't afford to lose a day, but we had to pack up all our stuff and get out within like 15 minutes in time to catch the last bus to Bariloche.
And, of course, Greg was a bit shattered from his journey from Spain. But, he was a trooper and agreed that we just hit the road.
So abruptly, we finished our packing for Patagonia and raced off to our 24 hour bus ride to Bariloche. On the bus, that's where this Argentina travel vlog ends. I'll see you tomorrow.
Photography in the South of Chile
Did you check our latest vid? : Bourton on the Water is Stunning! | Exploring Together The Cotswolds UK #2????????
--~--
Photography, in the south of Chile? Yes! That's what I decided to do in my last video and so I did. I travelled a 1000kms to the south to a city called Puerto Varas where I did not only take pictures but, also, enjoyed of the touristic attractiveness of the place: nature, food and more!
In the process of improving my photography I have noticed that one of the things that has allowed me to do improve is changing and varying landscapes. It allows you to see different things from different perspective and angles. Allowing you to play with composition and the settings you take the image.
Today I will be using both, fast and long shutter speed, changing cactus for rivers and mountains for volcanoes. But we also have to include some tourism! Otherwise, this would be a class of photography and I am no expert in this subject.
Join me in my day trip where I travelled a 2000 kms, 24 hours in a bus, explored some amazing places and enjoyed of the stunning view of volcanoes, rivers, lakes and more.
I hope you enjoy watching this video as much as I did doing this photography trip. Wishing you all a great week!

Flyfishing Chile Patagonia March 2019
Video and editing Axel Koenders from the Netherlands. He was a guest at the PBcamp Lodge. Trailer impression of a flyfishing trip at the Patagonian Basecamp Lodge in Northern Chilean Patagonian at the Palena River. From 12-22 of March 2019. By plane from Amsterdam to Santiago de Chile to Puerto Mont, hotel in Puerto Varas. Next day by small plane from PM to Chaiten and the last part 140 km by car to the Lodge PBcamp. A diversity of flyfishing for rainbow and brown trout in big and small rivers and lakes, tribituaries and hidden lagoons. Stuning, pristine and beautifull scenery in this part of Northern Chilenian Patagonia. Very nice and beautifull lodge with excellent wines, top class food and very good and professional staff. The Lodge is situated at the Palena river.
Taking a Bath Like a Boss in Patagonia
Here in Patagonia, I take a morning bath like a boss.
We stayed at Pampas del Corral Hotel in Coyhaique, Chile
Greg's Channel:
Today we woke up totally refreshed at Pampas del Corral in Coyhaique, Chile. It was so nice to get a good night's sleep in a nice guest house. And, to add to the refreshing morning, I decided to take a dip in the hotel's outdoor hot tub, which is actually heated by wood stove. Essentially, as the title says, I took my morning bath like a boss.
The people at Pampas del Corral were so good to us, and it was actually pretty sad to leave Coyhaique. I cannot wait to get back there and see them again. What a fantastic place.
The rest of the day we spent driving the Carretera Austral in Chile. We pushed all the way to Rio Tranquilo, and then beyond. By the end of the day, and after a number of drone flights and photo stops, we made it to the town of Chile Chico where we spent the night in preparation of our border crossing into Argentina the next day. All-in-all, it was just a perfect day in Chile, even if it was a long day driving.
There are more Chile vlogs coming soon, but tomorrow we head back into Argentina so I'll be back on Argentina travel vlogs for the next week. And, hopefully I can get the next travel vlog uploaded on time for a change.
