Nevada: Lake Tahoe
Lake Tahoe is a large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada of the United States. Lying at 6,225 ft (1,897 m), it straddles the state line between California and Nevada, west of Carson City. Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America, and at 122,160,280 acre⋅ft (150,682,490 dam3) trails only the five Great Lakes as the largest by volume in the United States. Its depth is 1,645 ft (501 m), making it the second deepest in the United States after Crater Lake in Oregon (1,945 ft (593 m)).
The lake was formed about two million years ago as part of the Lake Tahoe Basin, with the modern extent being shaped during the ice ages. It is known for the clarity of its water and the panorama of surrounding mountains on all sides. The area surrounding the lake is also referred to as Lake Tahoe, or simply Tahoe. More than 75% of the lake's watershed is national forest land, comprising the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit of the United States Forest Service.
Lake Tahoe is a major tourist attraction in both Nevada and California. It is home to winter sports, summer outdoor recreation, and scenery enjoyed throughout the year. Snow and ski resorts are a significant part of the area's economy and reputation. The Nevada side also offers large casinos, with highways providing year-round access to the entire area.
Approximately two-thirds of the shoreline is in California. The south shore is dominated by the lake's largest city, South Lake Tahoe, California, which adjoins the town of Stateline, Nevada, while Tahoe City, California, is located on the lake's northwest shore. Although highways run within sight of the lake shore for much of Tahoe's perimeter, many important parts of the shoreline lie within state parks or are protected by the United States Forest Service. The Lake Tahoe Watershed (USGS Huc 18100200) of 505 sq mi (1,310 km2) includes the land area that drains to the lake and the Lake Tahoe drainage divide traverses the same general area as the Tahoe Rim Trail.
Lake Tahoe is fed by 63 tributaries. These drain an area about the same size as the lake and produce half its water, with the balance entering as rain or snow falling directly on it.
The Truckee River is the lake's only outlet, flowing northeast through Reno, Nevada, into Pyramid Lake which has no outlet. It accounts for one third of the water that leaves the lake, the rest evaporating from the lake's vast surface. The flow of the Truckee River and the height of the lake are controlled by the Lake Tahoe Dam at the outlet. The natural rim is at 6,223 ft (1,897 m) above sea level, with a spillway at the dam controlling overflow. The maximum legal limit, to which the lake can be allowed to rise in order to store water, is at 6,229.1 ft (1,898.6 m). Around New Year 1996/1997 a Pineapple Express atmospheric river melted snow and caused the lake and river to overflow, inundating Reno and surrounding areas.
The 1974 film The Godfather Part II used the lakeside estate Fleur de Lac as the location of several scenes, including the elaborate First Communion celebration, the Senator's shakedown attempt of Michael, the assassination attempt on Michael, Michael disowning Fredo, Carmela Corleone's funeral, Fredo's death while fishing, and the closing scene of Michael sitting alone outside.
Lake Tahoe Vlog (GIRLS TRIP) Dani Walker
After Miss USA 2019 we took a girls trip to Lake Tahoe! Here's our mini adventure.
Since Lake Tahoe is so close to Reno, Liz and I decided to extend our trip and head to the lake. I hadn't been there since I was a kid and the mini getaway was much needed. We were so surprised by it's beauty. I did not expect it to be that gorgeous.
We booked a super cute Air bnb called The Bothy. The location was great because we were close to some restaurants, the grocery store, and a short drive to Incline Village, Mount Rose lookout, and Bonsai Rock. We'd seen beautiful photos of Bonsai Rock so it was one of our top locations to check out. It was a short, steep hike, but totally worth the trip.

Lake Tahoe Vacation Travel Guide
Lake Tahoe Vacation Travel Guide
Filled with over 39 trillion gallons of pure Sierra snowmelt and pushed a mile into the Californian and Nevada skies, Lake Tahoe is the USA’s largest alpine lake and one of the country’s oldest, year-round vacation playgrounds.
Lake Tahoe has forever drawn travellers to its shores, from the Native Americans who call this place Big Water, to the trappers, timber cutters and pioneers who followed.
When you’re ready for a little alpine magic, take the four-hour drive from San Francisco to the sunlit shores of Kings Beach. Set on Tahoe’s northern end, this beach was named after local card shark, Joe King, who used his winnings to develop some of the lake’s earliest lodgings. On the lake’s southern shore, is Pope Beach, where you’ll find another Tahoe institution, Camp Richardson.
From Pope Beach follow the bike path to the Taylor Creek Visitor Center. An open-air classroom for the entire family, the center features fabulous interpretative walks such as the Rainbow Trail.
Nearby, at DL Bliss State Park, follow the spectacular Rubicon Trail into neighboring Emerald Bay State Park. This park is home to the Eagle Falls Trail, a moderate two-mile hike that takes in some of the Sierra high country’s finest views.
When the ponderosa pines bend with the season’s first snow, Tahoe transforms into the nation’s favorite winter playground. Whether you’re looking for snow-capped peaks or crystal clear coves, places to bond with loved ones or pockets of pure solitude, The Lake in the Sky has it all.

Proposal could drastically change the look of South Lake Tahoe
A proposal to revitalize South Lake Tahoe's economy and create a main street core by moving U.S. 50 will be the focus of a community meeting Thursday evening. City planners are considering a proposal to realign U.S 50 at the state line to loop behind the Nevada casinos in order to create a more pedestrian-, bike- and scooter-friendly experience where the freeway currently divides the casino row. The effort is formally known as the US 50 South Shore Community Revitalization Project.

Weekend gateway in South Lake Tahoe I Travel diary
Travel video blog about our trip to South Lake Tahoe in early April 2018.
Lake Tahoe is located just over 3 hours away from San Francisco, making it the perfect destination for a weekend gateway trip. Located in the border os California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is most known for its beaches and ski resorts.
One of the first places we visited on this trip was Emerald Bay State Park, which was was the highlight of our trip. Emerald Bay is a state park that can be accessed through California State Route 89 and it is one of the popular destinations in Tahoe as it provides amazing panoramic views of the Lake.
We visited a few different points of the park on this trip such as Inspiration Point View, Emerald Bay Beach and a few different hiking trails along the route. We visited Tahoe in early April / Spring. At this time of the year, the weather beautiful and sunny, the wind was cold but overall the weather was pleasant and enjoyable..
The good thing about lake Tahoe is that there is always something to do, no matter what season you visit. In winter, you can go skiing or snowboarding in the Heavenly mountains. In summer, you can go for a hike or to the beach. The city also has plenty of good restaurants to choose from, as well as gift shops, and even Casinos.
We loved exploring the breathtaking landscapes surrounded by pine trees and snow capped mountains, charming wood cabins and everything that Lake Tahoe had to offer. We can’t wait to go back in summer to further explore the area and enjoy the beach!

It later sold in the ‘50’s and again in the 70’s, and was home to an old Tahoe family for nearly three decades. Four parcels were divided and The Pines is the result of the two most magnificent parcels on Lake Tahoe’s shores. The Guest House was built in 1996 and the Main Residence built in 1998. Today, The Pines is one of Lake Tahoe’s largest privately held estates and without question, one of the most remarkable.

MAIN RESIDENCE: Designed of lateral clear-heart stained redwood accented with dramatic Montana lodge poles, natural stone and granite with a treated wood shake roof. Built in 1998, The Pines is a contemporary two-story mountain-style residence constructed of the finest materials and craftsmanship throughout. The architecture has taken every part of the environment into consideration while achieving a comfortable floor plan for easy day-to-day living. Dramatic multi-level windows showcase Lake Tahoe’s panoramic views and the beautiful Sierra Nevada from almost every room.
THE GUEST HOUSE: The Guest house is a replica of the historic main house at Whispering Pines. Charming in every way, this home is approximately 3,000 square feet and consists of four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The exterior is clear-heart redwood half-rounds. In the great room, the original beams, carved fireplace mantle and wagon wheel light fixture were used, all dating back to 1935. The interior walls and ceilings are knotty pine and the great room overlooks the swimming pool, beach, lake, pier and boathouse. The bedrooms are magnificently decorated and have planter shutters and built-in dressers. Some of the bathroom fixtures are of original vintage. The kitchen has custom Ann Sacks tile, a gas log fireplace, Sub Zero refrigerator, Viking range, Bosch Dishwasher and icemaker and laundry area. French doors lead to the patio with an outdoor fireplace and dining area, which is perfect for entertaining. Distressed 6” plank pine flooring runs throughout. Van SIC...kle - The Van Sickle Trail - South Lake Tahoe - Mountain Biking
Thanks to Norco Bikes I was in South Lake Tahoe for 3 days doing some amazing riding. The owners of Shoreline Of Tahoe were our guides and started day one with a double shuttle of the Van Sickle Trail. Aside from being not quite used to the elevation the trail was super fun. I'm bummed we didn't get to do the other trail we were planning on the second shuttle, however, was super stoked to get to ride Van Sickle twice because the second time was sooooo much better! #MountainBiking #MTB #MountainBike
