Arusha is a city of approximately 400,000 people in Northeast Tanzania, East Africa. It's regarded as the gateway to the popular Northern Safari Circuit.
Arusha, also known as A Town by the locals, is situated at the foot of Mount Meru, Africa's 5th highest mountain. The altitude gives the city a pleasant climate and lush green environment.
Arusha is not a particularly attractive city in itself and is regarded by many visitors as little more than a necessary stopover before their safari starts in earnest. However, the natural charm of the Tanzanians and the buzz of a fast-growing city mean that Arusha has plenty to offer for those who are prepared to see beyond their air-conditioned safari trucks and satellite-TV equipped hotel rooms.
Arusha is home to the UNMICT, the successor to the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. It is also the site of the signing of the Arusha Declaration.
Safari in Arusha, Tanzania
=====================
Definitely something to try, if you can afford it. There are many types of trips for many budgets; usually the pricier ones get you out farther into the Serengeti and the Ngorogongoro Crater, to places that are a little less touched by man. The less expensive excursions to reserves and parks are specialized, of a shorter duration, and worthwhile. If there's one trip that will change your perspective on life, it's an African safari.
Not all tour guides are knowledgeable on all topics. A field guide to your favourite pursuit, such as birding, which is popular with visitors, is a worthwhile idea.
Beware of paying more than market prices, you will still be offered the same accommodation as the person who is paying the regular price.
Budget: - Travel for Change Africa (Safari & Volunteering), P.O BOX 10627, ☎ (+254) 714 361314, [new]. Go on one of their sustainable safaris across Tanzania, or volunteer with one of their partner organisations. They have fantastic options for both, and at a price that will suit every budget. Great guys, very professional.

See and Do in Arusha, Tanzania
==========================
Climb Mount Meru (4,667m). It can be done in 2-4 days, depending on your physical condition. You are not required to take guides and porters up Mount Meru, but you must be escorted by armed rangers. Temperatures can be freezing, so prepare warm clothing and sleeping bags.
Tanzania Tourist Board can arrange cultural excursions to nearby villages for TZS15,000-50,000. These cultural tourism visits can be some of the most rewarding parts of a trip to East Africa, and the human (cultural) element involved complements an animal-centric safari to the game parks. Some cultural tourism programs (Ilkiding'a, Ng'iresi) are within an hour's hike of Arusha. Several others are within an hour's drive (Monduli Juu, Longido, Mulala, Tengeru, Ilkurot, Oldonyo Sambu). They are great opportunities to learn about the Maasai and Meru tribes who live nearby, pastoralism, agriculture, stories & legends, local economies. There are several good hikes around Mt. Meru, including some beautiful waterfalls. Longido has camel safaris. They are flexible in nature, meaning you can arrange an hour-long visit or a day-long one. Some sites have lodging or camping.
Keep in mind your guide may ask for donations to a charity, school or orphanage. Some dishonest guides might pocket the money, so it is advisable to give money directly to a reputable charity. The guide will give you that information.
Century Cinema has movies for TZS5,000-7,000 (USD3-5). It is part of a modern complex on Njiro Rd, which also houses modern and upmarket restaurants including popular Indian restaurant Khan's, steak outlet McMoody's and serving Ethiopian, Tanzanian, European and other cuisines is a restaurant Spice Retreat. Njiro Rd is not safe to walk on at night, so get to the complex by another form of transport rather than by foot. A taxi to/from the town centre shouldn't cost more than TZS4,000 (USD3).
Coffee walk, Nkoaranga village (30 minutes drive from Arusha town towards Moshi), ☎ +255 784 420 342/+255 784 416 317 (info@wild-tracks.com) Private tours scheduled on demand. Coffee walk arranged by local coffee company on the slopes of Mt. Meru. A guide will take you to a small family farm and a coffee roastery to show you the journey of the coffee bean. $15-45pp (depending on group size).

Karatu District is one of the seven districts in the Arusha Region of Tanzania. It is bordered by the Ngorongoro District to the north, the Shinyanga Region to the west, the Monduli District to the east, and the Manyara Region to the south and southeast.
According to the 2002 Tanzania National Census, the population of the Karatu District was 178,434.
Karatu Town
---------------------
Visitors on their way to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater pass through the town of Karatu, under the benevolent peak of Ol Deani, on their way through the northern highlands. After climbing the Manyara Escarpment, the vegetation becomes more lush and green, finally entering into the highlands around Karatu. The extinct volcano of Ol Deani has gentle slopes and it is a prominent feature of the landscape.
In the past, the area around Karatu and Ol Deani was of great importance to the German colonial administration. The area’s cool climate, verdant hills, and pleasing views make it popular with settlers and farmers. Vast and extensive fields cover the slopes of the volcano and the lands around Karatu town. Coffee was a main crop grown for export, and a few large farms that remained in private hands still cultivate the cash crop on the hills and small valleys outside of town. Karatu offers splendid views of the northern highlands and is a popular base for visitors on their way to Ngorongoro Crater.
KARATU IRAQW CULTURAL TOURISM
---------------------------------------------------------
The group was established as Sandemu Iraqw Art and Culture Promoters in the year 2000 in Bashay village of Karatu district, Arusha region. This group has built a show centre to display the traditional culture of the Iraqw people. The Iraqw is the main ethnic group living in Karatu and Mbulu districts. They also live in Babati and Hanang districts. Their objective is to compile for posterity, a record of the lifestyle, traditions, history and culture of the Iraqw people, and also to involve and benefit local people in cultural tourism, thereby disseminating information and knowledge of the ancient traditions to the world.
KARATU IRAQW OFFERS:
-----------------------------------------
Walking tours in the villages, mountains and bush, organized according to the interests of the visitors, and vary from several hours to several days (Walking tours can be extended to include the Hadzabe and Datogan in Lake Eyasi.)
Visits to development projects schools, dispensaries, hospitals, historical sites like German and British settlements, coffee plantations, and graves in Oldeani on the rim of the Oldeani Mountain and Ngorongoro Crater.

Camping in rural and natural traditional environment or stays in Iraqw traditional houses

It’s time for the second Africa Inside Out country: TANZANIA! World famous because of the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro crater, the Kilimanjaro and – last but not least – Zanzibar! ◎ About Charlie and Charlie's Travels ◎
Hi, I'm Charlie! Some time ago (in 2014) I started an internship in Kenya. I haven't left since, because I fell in love with Africa and started my own travel agency, Charlie's Travels. It's specialised in off the beaten track tours, because we think this continent is so much more than just safari tours and beaches. We believe that for the real Africa experience, you need to go beyond the tourist traps. Africa has so many stereotypes and preconceptions. By making cool and relevant content, we want to show you a different side of the continent! We want to create new routes and awesome adventures, which will make you want to travel here and see it for yourself.

Travelling To Tanzania From Kenya on a Budget [Nairobi to Arusha, Kikuletwa, Moshi]
I thought it's a good idea to try to travelling to Tanzania from Kenya on a budget for 6 Days. I moved from Nairobi to Namanga border, Arusha, Moshi, Marangu, Tarakea border and finally back to Nairobi in 6 days time.
Believe it or not, I spent only Ksh. 14K (TZS 280,000 ) or simply 140 USD. Watch the entire video to see how I managed to travel on such a 'small' budget for a solo trip.
You can skip to a specific location in the video;
00:34 Namanga border
01:05 Arusha
02:57 Kikuletwa Hot Springs (Chemka Maji Moto Springs)
05:02 Moshi (Kilimanjaro Crane Hotel)
06:27 Marangu (Stella Villa Lodge)
07:19 Marangu Falls Kinukamori
08:11 Chagga Museum
11:26 Mount Kilimanjaro National Park
13:01 Mwika to Tarakea Border
To book the Arusha Villa and other affordable accommodations across the world, sign up on AirBnb ( and search Mount Meru House and Stella Villa Lodge
- Namanga border crossing - requirements; as a Kenyan one needs a passport or a temporary passport to travel to Tanzania. Apply one on Ecitizen ( One also requires a valid yellow fever certificate (done in hospitals and at the border for Ksh. 1500)
Driving one's vehicle from Kenya to Tanzania requires Comesa Insurance.
One doesn't require a visa to travel to Tanzania From Kenya or any other East African Country due to the Visa agreement.
Please note that there is no Uber or Taxify or any Taxi hail apps in Arusha, Moshi and Marangu. So be ready to deal with local taxis and shuttles.
If you can't handle all those logistics I would highly recommend you do a group tour with tour agency like this one ( which is even more cheaper and less hassle.

Health Center - Africa Amini Alama
The dispensary was established in Momella, Tanzania, in Mai 2012 for those patients who have no possibility for medical care. About 200 people per day of all ages have been treated in the last years. Patients mostly live in a two days walking distance to the dispensary and accept long walks to be treated at our place. They know that they do not only get good medicine but also health support by vitamins, food, transfer by car and surgery at appropriate hospitals if urgently necessary. If patients can´t afford the surgery we try to find sponsors for them. We treat and meet the needs of patients of all tribes coming to our dispensary, therefore many Maasai are looking for help here that they would not get in other places because their tribe is regarded as a “lower one” in Tanzania.
Our team consists of 4 doctors, 1 dentist, 1 laboratory assistant, an eye doctor , 1 midwife and 1 nurse an a healing center with 8 nurses. DDr.Christine Wallner and Mag.Dr. Cornelia Wallner-Frisee work on a voluntary basis mainly to train the doctors in the health center. Prof. Dr. Guldner is visiting the place twice per year in order to supervise the project and educate doctors. We run a general ward, a dentist unit, a laboratory, an ultrasound unit, a mother and child care and a ward for inpatient treatment. We are about to open a surgery unit by mid of this year. We have more patients than any other Health Center in Tanzania due to special techniques of natural healing and our valuable medicine and good diagnostic tools. We are in close cooperation with the local health authorities and regard ourselves as part of it. Some of the doctors are paid by the government. We believe that we can make changes in the health system only when being part of it and not fighting against it.
As two women doctors working on the place, our main interest concerns women and children in urgent need. Therefore with the help of Austrian sponsors we established a very special eye clinic and provide eye glasses for children in need at very low prices or for free. Our dentist gives special courses for dental hygiene at schools and we have a very unique mother child unit in the area. Women come from far away with their children to be treated, vaccinated or to give birth in our small birth unit.
With a new surgery unit, an xray and ultrasound unit and many patients from all tansania, we are expanding and are in need of more treatment rooms in order to cope with the patient load every day.

ARUSHA AREA
Arusha is located in the North West of Tanzania, and is the nearest city to the big national parks of the Northern circuit, which has made Arusha into the “safari capital” of Tanzania. The town itself seems to be run down, crowded and dusty, but if you get to know it better you will find that there are some nice venues and there is plenty of culture and nature in the surrounding area to be discovered.
ARUSHA SAFARI LODGE
Welcome to Arusha Safari Lodge, a grand private residence set in lush expansive grounds complete with a swimming pool and an “Out of Africa” style restaurant for afternoon tea and sundowners. The lodge is tucked away on volcanic hills with spectacular views of Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru, located only four kilometers outside of Arusha. The lodge goes to great lengths to ensure all guests are personally taken care of. All cottages are privately set with views of the swimming pool and lush gardens and furnished with Zanzibar beds.

World Food Day Tanzania
Farmers, Pastoralists and Activists gathered in Dar es Salaam on World Food Day. They focussed their discussions on the how land grabbing is undermining food security in Tanzania and what must be done about it. The MS Global Platform Tanzania demonstrated the problem of bio-fuels taking food from the hungry and took the message to the streets.
The event called for a stop to land grabbing and for assistance to go to small scale food producers.
MAAJABU Ya Maji MOTO Yanayowavuta Wazungu Tanzania/Kilimanjaro #HotSprings
#Kikuletwa #HotSprings is located in the middle of a semi arid landscape, surrounded by sprawling fig trees. Amid the trees it features crystal clear water bubbling from underground springs. This is a perfect destination, to take a swim and relax after a Kilimanjaro climb or safari, or just to get away for a day. The drive from Moshi / Arusha takes about 1 hour 30 min each way.
The drive to Kikuletwa Hot Springs will take about 1 hour 30 min. Pick up will be around 9 am in Moshi or Arusha. On a clear day, beautiful views of Mt. Meru or Mt. #Kilimanjaro can be seen from the main road. After leaving the main road the drive will continue thru gorgeous African country side past small villages, bush land, dry riverbeds, as well as baobab and acacia trees. This area, which used to be a hunting ground for Europeans during the 1800s, is home to members of many different tribes, peacefully co-existing as neighbors. Although the game has long since migrated, it is still a haven to many animal species, including a large variety of birds. After 1 hour 30 min of driving, green sprawling fig trees fed by underground springs, will appear out of nowhere in this dry landscape, indicating Kikuletwa Hot Springs are within reach. The crystal clear water of the springs is perfectly refreshing and you may take a plunge via a rope from the trees, slowly wade into the water from the side, or just relax in the shade of the trees.
