Food For Thought - Erasmus+ Youth Exchange
The Erasmus+ youth exchange is an educational programme for young people who would like to get out of their comfort zone, experience an intercultural environment and open their view on different topics that can contribute to their personal and professional development.
During the project Food for Thought participants reflected on the following topics:
- Resource-use and ecological footprint
- Consumerism and food life-cycle
- Food and employment in the EU
The activities contributed to learn about three steps of the food life-cycle:
1. Resource
Participants discovered the origins of food, discussed how much resources we use to produce certain types of food, which human rights are linked to this life-phase of food (e.g. workers’ rights, equal distribution of resources, migration etc.), what different types of agriculture and producing exist (e.g. organic farming, local producers etc.) and how our choices of food-purchase affect the actors (humans, animals, plants, the Earth).
2. Use
We experimented and reflected on the cultural, social and health aspects of food: why we eat, how we eat, what rituals and traditions we relate to food, why we have different diets, and how our body reacts to food.
3. Waste
We discussed where does food end up, how we can reduce food waste, what strategies we can choose to transform waste into resource.
The project was financed by the Italian National Agency and took place between the 28th of June and the 5th of July in 2019, with the participation of 30 young people (age 15-25) from Spain, Italy, Greece, Slovenia, Benin, Gambia and Romania.
