Heian Shrine in Cherry Blossom Season, Kyoto - 平安神宮●京都 - Japan As It Truly Is
Heian Shrine (Heian Jingu) was made in 1895 to celebrate the 1100 year anniversary of moving the capital to Kyoto.
At an industrial exposition fair, Japan decided to recreate the old Heian Palace, but it was done at a 5/8 scale. It was burned down in 1976 but rebuilt within 3 years, and now offers an expansive and beautiful place to catch a glimpse of old Japan.
Heian Shrine is open 6 AM-5:30 PM (earlier in winter months). Free of charge.
See the official website at:
Be sure also to see the hidden treasure chest of Heian Shrine (a.k.a. Heian Jingu, 平安神宮) - the beautiful gardens behind it:

花見 Hanami & 桜Cherry Blossoms in Japan
My tips to learn Japanese at
Hi guys,
I'm in Japan this weekend and it just happens to be 花見 time! 花見 (Hanami) is where everyone goes out to have a picnic and look (見る miru )at the flowers (花 hana)
Of course the main flower is the bud of the 桜 - sakura - cherry blossom tree.
Unfortunately today was horrible weather so I couldn't get any decent pictures of the trees. So I thought I'd just do a quick run around so you can see some of the atmosphere.
We're out again tomorrow so fingers crossed that the weather will be better and I can try and get some better pictures of the beautiful 桜!
Would you like me to upload them if I can?
Be genki,
Richard

Beautiful Kyoto: Cherry Blossoms at Heian Shrine [4K]
Numerous shrines and temples around Kyoto are famous for sakura viewing in spring, and one of those shrines is Heian Jingū. The shrine's Shin'en Garden is full of the beautiful weeping variety of cherry trees, whose pink blossoms spill down over bamboo supports and form curtains of flowers. Designed by the famous Ogawa Jihei (Ueji), the garden features a charming mix of Eastern and Western styles, with a beautiful pond and bridge. With gorgeous sakura blooming in spring, you won't want to miss the Heian Shrine!

Koriyama Castle: Sakura Paradise!
Tsutsui Junkei, The Warrior Who Unified Yamato, Builds a Castle in Koriyama!
Kōriyama Castle was a Japanese castle in what is now the city of Yamato-Kōriyama, Nara Prefecture, Japan. The Sengoku daimyo Tsutsui Junkei started construction of the castle, and Toyotomi Hidenaga made it his residence. In the Edo period, it became the headquarters of the Kōriyama Domain. During this time it was held variously by members of the Mizuno, Okudaira Matsudaira, Honda, Fujii Matsudaira, and Yanagisawa clans.
Today, many walls and moats are preserved in a public park in the city. The Yanagisawa Shrine stands within the grounds.
Many influential warriors battled to gain power over this region. However, in the Edo period a succession of dominant lords were deployed to rule Koriyama realm.
It was Tsutsui Junkei who united the Yamato province by overcoming the rising local samurais, one after another. His achievement of Yamato unification, supported by Oda Nobunaga, took place in 1576, and his entrance into Koriyama Castle was accomplished in 1580. Koriyama was a bustling area where markets stood in rows, but Junkei's arrival brought even more prosperity to the town.
There is a famous episode about Junkei. After the Incident of Honnō-ji in 1582,(The Incident at Honnō-ji refers to the forced suicide on June 21, 1582 of Japanese daimyo Oda Nobunaga at the hands of his samurai general Akechi Mitsuhide. This occurred in Honnō-ji, a temple in Kyoto, ending Nobunaga's quest to consolidate centralized power in Japan under his authority.) Junkei was asked by his ally Akechi Mitsuhide, to send troops to Horagatoge pass for military assistance. However, impressed by the superior forces of the opponent, Junkei brooded over whether to accept Mitsuhide's demand, but finally he made up his mind to wait and see which side to take. This incident has been handed down through a Japanese sayingHoragatoge o kimekomu or to wait and see at Horagatoge, which is now used in a negative sense, to come down on the right side of the fence.
Beautiful Kyoto: Sakura at the Sewaritei River Park [4K]
Popular among locals but as of yet unknown to many tourists, journey southwest of Kyoto to find the Sewaritei riverbank, where a 1.4 kilometer long path is lined on both sides with tall, bountiful cherry trees. The sakura tunnel effect at this riverside park in Yawata city is absolutely gorgeous, and you can even picnic underneath the branches heavy with flowers. In a nearby area vendors set up selling tasty snacks and souvenirs, and depending on the day you might see some entertainment during April's cherry blossom season. Those interested can even take a short boat ride along the path. As beautiful as this place is, make sure you get there early if you want a prime spot to lay your picnic blanket down!

Japan Before Dawn - Moments in Time Ep 7
This is our biggest episode yet as I explore and photograph some of my favorite locations in Kyoto, Nara, and Osaka during a beautiful sakura season beginning with the seemingly infinite rows of vermilion torii gates in the Fushimi Inari Shrine. A very early morning ensures I have the entire shrine all to myself as the lanterns light the beautiful paths.
Next, I connect with my friend and local tour guide Yumi and we take a train together to Nara to explore some of Japan’s most important cultural and UNESCO World Heritage sites like Todai-ji temple. But Nara isn’t just known for the ancient architecture, it’s also famous for the thousands of nearly domesticated local deer that have become a tourist attraction themselves.
After another very early morning photographing the famous Bamboo Forest in Arashiyama, we quickly learn just how busy this location becomes when mainstream tourists arrive. Thankfully arriving super early ensures that I’m able to get the shot, and before heading to Osaka, I share about every piece of gear that’s in my camera bag.
In Osaka, I meet up with local landscape photographer Hideaki Sumi and we photograph a great spot at Osaka Castle where the Cherry Blossoms surround and frame the castle. We stay through a beautiful sunset and blue hour until we are able to get the perfect shot with the best light.
In this Moments in Time series, we take a journey around the world together, and share about photography, travel, people, food, experiences, and everything that happens between the frames I capture. Join our Moments in Time Flickr community for some exclusive content being released next week or tune back in on Tuesday, August 13th for a new episode from the tulip fields of the Netherlands, as we begin the European portion of this adventure.

City Walk In front of Kyoto Station/Higashi Hongan-Ji Temple
【Higashi Hongan-Ji Temple】
Higashi Hongan-ji Temple, or, the Eastern Temple of the Original Vow, is one of two dominant sub-sects of Shin Buddhism in Japan and abroad, the other being Nishi Honganji Temple (or, 'The Western Temple of the Original Vow'). It is also the name of the head temple in Kyoto, a collection of buildings built in 1895 after a fire burned down the previous temple. As with many sites in Kyoto, these two complexes have more casual names and are known affectionately in Kyoto as Onissan (Honorable Mr. West) and Ohigashisan (Honorable Mr. East).

Beautiful Kyoto: Plum Blossom Viewing Spots (Kitano Tenmangū, Jōnangū & Zuishin-in) [4K]
See more beautiful plum blossoms at our website:
Though Japan may be famous for its cherry blossoms, those knowledgeable about their greenery are aware that there are actually many more flowering trees and plants that are popular for seasonal viewing nationwide.
The precursor to the blooming of sakura, ume (plum trees) were introduced from China hundreds of years ago and come in shades from pure white to dark pink. Plums are a popular food in Japanese cuisine, and you will find them in many forms from your tea to pickles in the center of your rice balls. In addition, plum trees were thought to ward off danger, and it was once common to plant them in the northeast corner of gardens, that direction being considered most susceptible to misfortune.
Plum blossoms may be difficult to distinguish from cherry and peach to the untrained eye, and similar to those other flowering trees they have a somewhat short lifespan. Still, plum trees bloom slightly longer and are usually visible from the colder month of February down through March. Events such as plum viewings and tea ceremonies are also held around this time. If you’re in Kyoto during this season, be sure to keep your eye out for these cheerful flowers blooming despite the chill in the air.

Ryoanji Temple in Cherry Blossom Season, Kyoto
The group walked down the street from Rokuon-ji Temple to Ryoanji Temple to see its famous Zen rock garden. There are 15 rocks placed on a bed of white gravel and it is said that only one who has reached enlightenment is able to see all 15 rocks at one time. (That is certainly not me!)
The walls were made of clay boiled in oil and oil has seeped out over time, creating unique wall designs. Ryoanji Temple was originally a country house belonging to the Tokudaji clan; destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1499, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stupendously gorgeous when the cherry blossoms bloom.

Kinpusen-ji Temple in the Kii Mountains, Nara Prefecture | The Real Japan | HD
Yoshino is a town in the Kii Mountains, east of Osaka.
It’s the gateway to Mount Yoshino, known for the thousands of cherry trees that blossom in the spring.
The mountain is also home to the massive, wooden Kinpusen-ji Temple - the second largest wooden structure in Japan (after the Great Buddha Hall at Todai-ji in Nara).
It was completed in the second half of the 7th century.
Kinpusen-ji is one of the most important temples of Shugendo, a religion based on mountain worship that combines tenets of both Buddhism and Shinto.

A Walk Down Matsubara Dori in Kyoto
After a visit to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, visitors go down Matsubara Dori, a dense pedestrian shopping street in Kyoto. The street is lined with traditional wooden shops selling snacks, green tea and souvenirs. The narrow street is great not only for shopping but people watching as well. Men and women dressed in colorful kimonos parade up and down the street. Two of Kyoto’s most attractive streets nearby are Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka. Lined with beautifully restored traditional shophouses, it’s here that you are most likely to imagine what old Kyoto looked like.

Tōfuku-ji temple and gardens, Kyoto, Japan travel video
The Tofuku-ji Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan is considered one of the five great Zen temples of Kyoto. Originally built in the year 1236 it burned down after a couple of centuries and then was rebuilt in the 15th century to the original plans and stands today as a fine example of a medieval Zen temple.
Typical of most Kyoto temples, it is a group of more than a dozen wooden structures in a lush garden setting, especially famous for the very large Sanmon temple gate, 65 feet high, and the bright fall colors of maple leaves when you're here in the autumn season.
Here too we have a small Shinto shrine area with another torii tunnel leading up to a staircase that brings you up the hill.
At this temple complex of Tofuku-ji there are about a dozen sub-temples.
One of the things that most noted for is the fall color. We arrived in early December but still there was the lingering color of the maple leaves which were really bright and spectacular.
