Ho Chi Minh city, also known as Saigon, is the biggest city in Southern Vietnam. It is more of a sprawling metropolis than Hanoi with its many districts. It is still referred to as Saigon by local & tourist alike. As a first time visitor I stayed at District 1 and explored the wonderful surrounding area on day & Night tours.
Things I covered on Day 2 in Ho chi Minh City:
Admittedly, Ho chi Minh City isn’t it as full of sight as Hanoi with it’s old quarter, but once you get in to the city, there is a certain vibrant liveliness that you can’t ignore. It has a younger, more urban vibe than its counterpart and with almost two hundred years of French occupation, there is plenty to see.
1 - Dinner Cruise: Cruising along Saigon river brings lot of relaxing feeling with cool breeze and nice weather. There are plenty of companies who offer these dinner cruising services which generally starts in the evening around 7 PM and takes you around the Saigon river to get panoramic view of Ho Chi Minh city colorful skyline with delicious Vietnamese food & some wonderful performances by the locals. This 2 hours dinner cruise may cost you in the range of 25 to 35 $ per person, as its prices varies company to company.
2 - Ben Thanh Market:
Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City's District 1 is a great place to buy local handicrafts, branded goods, Vietnamese art and other souvenirs. Here, you’ll find eating stalls inside the market where you can get a taste of hawker-style Vietnamese cuisine or simply cool off with a cold drink when the bargaining becomes too much. The market is big, difficult to navigate at times and certainly best avoided during the hottest part of the day but all the same its well worth a look. When night falls, restaurants around the perimeter of the market open their doors creating a vibrant street side scene filling the air with the scents of wok-fried noodles, barbecued fish and meats. One of Saigon’s oldest landmarks, Ben Thanh offers a great atmosphere that is absolutely authentically Vietnamese.
3 - War Remnants Museum:
The War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City first opened to the public in 1975. Once known as the ‘Museum of American War Crimes’, it's a shocking reminder of the long and brutal Vietnam War. Graphic photographs and American military equipment are on display. There's a helicopter with rocket launchers, a tank, a fighter plane, a single-seater attack aircraft. You can also see a conventional bomb that weighs at 6,800kg. American troops had used these weapons against the Vietnamese between 1945 and 1975.
The most talked-about exhibits at the War Remnants Museum are the ‘tiger cages'. The South Vietnamese government kept their political prisoners in these confinements. Locals believe the cages imprisoned up to 14 people at a time. The museum also has a guillotine brought in by the French government. Both the French and South Vietnamese used it to execute their prisoners until 1960. Also featured are grisly photos of victims that had suffered ‘Agent Orange’. As many as 4.8 million people were exposed to strong pesticide and chemical spray. The Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs believed 500,000 children were born with birth defects. The War Remnants Museum is in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City. It's every day from 07:30 to 17:00. A visit to this war museum can be disturbing experience for most people. Although children can enter, we highly advise against it.
Opening Hours: Daily 07.30 - 12.00 & 13:30 – 17:00
Location: 28 Vo Van Tan, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City

When I was in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), along with eating as much Vietnamese food as I could, one of my goals was to film a travel video about some of the best things to do in Saigon. After putting together a complete list, it turned out to be 23, and I hope this list of attractions will help and inspire you to visit Vietnam’s largest and most exciting city.
1. Binh Tay Market - Binh Tay Market is one of the largest wholesale distribution markets, and a perfect place to go if you’re looking to go shopping in Ho Chi Minh City.
2. Thien Hau Temple (Pagoda) - Located in Chinatown, in District 5, the temple is dedicated to Thien Hau and I really loved the sculptures and the elaborate design of the temple.
3. Museum of Ho Chi Minh City - This museum offers a glimpse into the history and development of the city and Vietnam.
4. Bitexco Financial Tower - This is the tallest building in Saigon, and you can either go to the Skydeck or a cafe at the top for a view of the city.
5. Independence Palace (Reunification Palace) - Probably one of the most well known tourism things to do in Saigon is to visit the Independence Palace, the the former home of the president of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
6. Saigon Cathedral of Notre Dame - With the French influence in Vietnam, the Notre Dame cathedral is a beautiful Catholic church. Attend a service or just visit.
7. Central Post Office - Designed by Gustave Eiffel, the Central Post Office in Ho Chi Minh City is an attraction mainly for its design and architecture. It’s a beautiful building.
8. War Remnants Museum - Although this is not one of the happiest attractions in Saigon, it’s a place to remember and honor the horrible events that are a result of a war.
9. Opera House - Right in Dong Khoi area, and there are still opera shows available.
10. Dong Khoi Street - This is the height of high end shopping in Saigon.
11. Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens - The zoo itself is not too great, but the beauty of the Saigon zoo is the botanical gardens, and the lush gardens, and taking a break from the city.
12. FITO Museum (Museum of Traditional Vietnamese Medicine) - I was quite impressed by the Vietnamese medicine private museum - very interactive and educational.
13. San Art Laboratory – If you love modern art, the San Art Laboratory is a great place to see and visit in Saigon.
14. Turtle Lake at Night - If you’re looking for some things to do at night in Saigon, head to Turtle Lake to chill out, relax, hang out with friends, and eat snacks.
15. Ben Thanh Market - One of the most famous things to do in Saigon District 1 is visit the Ben Thanh Market, one of the major central landmarks of the city.
16. Phu My Hung and Starlight Bridge - Located outside of central Ho Chi Minh City, Phu My Hung is a modern development, and a great place to walk around.
17. Water Puppet Show - Though originally from the north of Vietnam, water puppet shows are popular also in Saigon. I went to the Golden Dragon Water Puppet theater.
18. Museum of Vietnamese History - Probably one of the most extensive and important museum showing the history of Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City.
19. Rooftop Bar - Seeing Saigon from above offers a great perspective.
20. Fine Arts Museum - This was my favorite of all the museums in Saigon. The museum is housed in a well preserved building, and the art is amazing - located right in District 1 across the roundabout from Ben Thanh Market.
21. Jade Emperor Pagoda - Dedicated to the Jade Emperor, the pagoda has a real ancient feel to it, and it’s worth seeing when you visit.
22. Local Wet Market - One of my favorite things to do is visit a local fresh wet market, which you’ll find all over the city. The ingredients, food, and culture, all stand out at fresh markets.
23. Vietnamese Street Food - By my ultimate favorite activity in Saigon is eating street food, and there are an abundance of delicious Vietnamese street foods to sample.
Thank you for watching this video about the top 23 things to do in Saigon, Vietnam. I hope it has given you some great ideas to help you plan your visit.

Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) and surroundings Vietnam.
Ho Chi Minh City, formerly named Saigon, is the largest city in Vietnam. The metropolitan area, which consists of the Ho Chi Minh City metropolitan area, Thu Dau Mot, Di An, Bien Hoa and surrounding towns, is populated by more than 9,000,000 people, making it the most populous metropolitan area in Vietnam. The city's population is expected to grow to 13.9 million in 2025.
Under the name Saigon, it was the capital of the French colony of Cochin-china and later of the independent republic of South Vietnam from 1955--75. South Vietnam, as an anti-communist, capitalist republic, fought against the communist North Vietnamese and Viet Cong during the Vietnam War, with aid from the United States and countries including Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. Saigon fell when it was captured by the communists on 30 April 1975, ending the war with a Communist victory.
When you visit the city then the first thing that is remarkable is the transport by motorbikes and scooters. There are approximated 340,000 cars and 3.5 million motorcycles in the city. You have problems by crossing the streets.
Today, the city's core is still adorned with wide elegant boulevards and historic French colonial buildings. The city has various museums, such as the Ho Chi Minh City Museum, Museum of Vietnamese History, the Revolutionary Museum, the Museum of Southeastern Armed Forces, the War Remnants Museum, the Museum of Southern Women, the Museum of Fine Art, the Nha Rong Memorial House.
In the presentation you get an impression of the city. We also took part in a prayer service in a church of the Cao Dai Religion, a very traditional synthese of world-religions.
Vietnam War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City | 4K (graphic)
The museum comprises a series of themed rooms in several buildings, with period military equipment placed within a walled yard. The military equipment includes a UH-1 Huey helicopter, an F-5A fighter, a BLU-82 Daisy Cutter bomb, M48 Patton tank, an A-1 Skyraider attack bomber, and an A-37 Dragonfly attack bomber. There are a number of pieces of unexploded ordnance stored in the corner of the yard, with their charges and/or fuses removed.
One building reproduces the tiger cages in which the South Vietnamese government kept political prisoners. Other exhibits include graphic photography,[3] accompanied by a short text in English, Vietnamese and Japanese, covering the effects of Agent Orange and other chemical defoliant sprays, the use of napalm and phosphorus bombs, and war atrocities such as the My Lai massacre. The photographic display includes work by Vietnam War photojournalist Bunyo Ishikawa that he donated to the museum in 1998. Curiosities include a guillotine used by the French and South Vietnamese to execute prisoners,[3] the last time being in 1960, and three jars of preserved human fetuses allegedly deformed by exposure to dioxins and dioxin-like compounds, contained in the defoliant Agent Orange. It is located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City or formerly known as Saigon, Vietnam - Wiki

whats the best thing about saigon?
Video - Source by VnExpress.
whats the best thing about saigon?:
A visit to Ho Chi Minh City is an encounter with exotic food, French colonial architecture and memories of war, writes Guy Wilkinson.
1, Cheap eats
Ho Chi Minh City (also still called Saigon) is famous for its pho (traditional Vietnamese noodle soup) and pork rolls. Often the best places are shops and stalls named after family members, such as Aunty or Chi (meaning sister) followed by a number representing their order in the family and, finally, their name. Though many chains, such as Pho24 and Pho 2000, do big business these days, you can't beat family-run outfits for the real deal.
2, War Remnants Museum
Not for the squeamish, the War Remnants Museum documents the brutality of the Vietnam War and, although it has received criticism for its alleged propagandist tone, it remains one of the most visited museums in the country, attracting more than half a million visitors a year. Retired military vehicles such as Huey helicopters, attack bombers and even an M48 Patton tank dominate the front yard while, inside, a harrowing selection of text and photographic exhibits tell the story. (Open 7.30am-noon and 1.30-5pm.)
3, Bonsai River Cruise
Though it's true the Saigon River has serious pollution issues, a Bonsai dinner cruise is still a unique experience. Watch the city lights at sunset while sipping a Tom Collins from the deck of a traditional 19th-century dragon boat, take in a show and enjoy a buffet meal in style. Try to pre-book and stretch your dollar for a more boutique cruise if funds permit.
4, History Museum
Ensconced among lush botanic gardens in a beautiful 1929 French colonial building is the history museum, showcasing 4000 years of Vietnamese life and culture, starting from the Bronze Age. The collection includes items from the Cham and Khmer civilisations as well as artefacts illustrating mountain culture, revolutionary periods and even gifts bestowed on president Ho Chi Minh before his death. Not all exhibits are clearly labelled in English, but the setting practically justifies the visit. (Open Tuesday-Sunday, 8-11am and 1.30-4.30pm.)
5, Saigon Central Post Office
This building stands as a reminder of the more than 70 years of French colonial rule (and it's still an operating post office, so you have no excuse not to send a postcard home). Designed by Gustave Eiffel (yes, like the tower), the Saigon Central Post Office was completed in 1891, two years after he finished that famous Parisian landmark. Walk along the pretty patterned tile floor and admire the decorative ceilings.
6, Daring food
Fertilised duck eggs, fermented scorpion wine, deep-fried snake dishes: Vietnam is synonymous with cuisine to put hairs on your chest. Try to avoid restaurants prone to killing the snake in front of you (some diners like to feast on the still-beating heart). It's not kind to the snake and it won't increase virility. Reputable hotels can point you in the direction of a good restaurant with such creatures on the menu, or look out for glass bottles of snake wine known as ruou thuoc at most markets. Don't worry, the venom is neutralised by the ethanol.
7, Markets
There isn't much you can't buy from a market here, and although haggling is an art form requiring practice, it's still easy enough to pick up a bargain. District 1's Ben Thanh Market is certainly the most famous — there are more than 3000 stalls — but prices can often be inflated for tourists. For a lesser-known alternative, District 1's Tan Dinh specialises in silks and clothing material, while Ben Thanh night market is popular for those who prefer bargain hunting free from the noon heat.
8, Coffee
Since its introduction to Vietnam by French colonists in the 19th century, coffee has become a national obsession that rivals our own. Thanks to the intense humidity, iced coffee, known locally as ca phe sua da, is generally favoured, and is brewed with a dark roast over a single metal french drip filter called ca phe phin. Served with sweet condensed milk poured over ice, it's the perfect kick-start. Head to the Tan Tao Park to enjoy an early-morning brew with the locals or order a cup from any street vendor.
9, Pagodas and temples
The kaleidoscopic Jade Emperor Pagoda is widely regarded as the city's most spectacular, but it's one of many. For a dose of southern India's colour, check out Mariamman Temple, built in the 19th century by traders to honour the Hindu goddess Mariamman. For a wealth of Chinese temples, check out Cholon or take a day-trip to the Cao Dai temple at Tay Ninh, which is easily combined with a tour of the nearby Cu Chi tunnels. Incorporating aspects of Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism and even Catholicism, it was built between 1933 and 1955. (Day tours, including the temple and tunnels, cost about $8.)

VIETNAM: 12-THOUSAND PRISONERS RELEASED
Vietnamese/Nat
More than 12-thousand Vietnamese prisoners were released nationwide on Sunday as part of a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the country's reunification.
Ex-murderers, ex-drug traffickers, ex-thieves, were all being release as long as they served over a third of their sentence.
It was a victory against all odds, and the Vietnamese government wants to share its joy with everyone - even those it has condemned.
At Thu Duc Prison in Binh Thuan province, 130 kilometres from Ho Chi Minh City, four hundred and twelve inmates were released.
They were but a fraction of the thousands across the country who rediscovered their freedom to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the reunification of Vietnam.
SOUNDBITE: (Vietnamese)
I feel very happy this morning just like I have been reborn. I never thought I could rejoin society because I was serving a life sentence. I couldn't imagine that one day I would go home, but now it is happening.
SUPER CAPTION: Lam Tuyen, released prisoner
Lam Tuyen is not the only one who is surprised.
The mood had the festive feel of a college graduation ceremony, as murderers and drug dealers, among others, who had served at least a third of their sentences, were released.
Many were elated as they anticipated reunions with spouses and relatives just outside the front gate.
But there were also sad stories from inmates such as Vu, who knew no one would be greeting them.
She'd served 17 years for throwing acid on her husband.
SOUNDBITE: (Vietnamese)
I am very happy and moved because I am enjoying this special amnesty on the day the country celebrates the 25th anniversary of the liberation of the South.
SUPER CAPTION: Vu Thi Hong Van, released prisoner
This day was to mark a new era for Vietnam, which is now aiming for a higher economic growth rate, the elimination of corruption and less restrictive policies as expressed by Ho Chi Minh City mayor Vo Viet Thanh.
SOUNDBITE: (Vietnamese)
This represents the policy of the Party and the State of Vietnam to give an amnesty to people who show remorse for their crimes and who want to make amends.
SUPER CAPTION: Prison Director Hothanh Dinh
As prisoners wish to make amends, so too do Vietnam and the United States - once bitter enemies, now trying to put the past behind them, a quarter of a century on.

DID THIS REALLY HAPPEN IN VIETNAM? | HO QUOC PAGODA | VIETNAM VLOG #008
Ho Quoc Pagoda & Coconut Tree Prison, Vietnam Vlog #008.
In this vlog we visit the Ho Quoc Pagoda and Coconut Tree Prison. The temple is definitely worth a visit if you are in Phú Quốc. However, it is has recently been constructed and therefore, lacks that special feeling you get from visiting a really historic temple. It is still a beautiful place worth exploring. We recommend visiting in the morning as the sun rises over this east facing temple.
After that we headed to the famous Phú Quốc prison, also known as Coconut Tree Prison. This was a truly hallowing experience that we did not expect. A definite worthwhile visit, but it is not for the feint-hearted. As you will see from the video some of the torture methods were rather brutal. We definitely learnt a lot from this visit.
This island is a true hidden gem and is sure to explode into a mainstream tourist attraction very soon. Luckily it is still in the developing phase and still relatively unheard of. The island blew us away with its beauty and wealth of activities to keep travelers entertained.
Phú Quốc is Vietnam's largest island and can be found a short plane ride from the Ho Chi Minh City, which provides a fantastic getaway for those living in the bustling metropolis.
Be sure to stay tuned for the next few vlogs from Phú Quốc , we cannot wait to show you! We'll see you there!:)

Hi travellers!
The Cu Chi Tunnels are an immense network of underground tunnels located in Ho Chi Minh, Saigon. Today the tunnels are preserved and converted into a memorial complex. Here you can learn first hand what it was like during wartime in Vietnam. See how soldiers lived and what tactics were implemented during the war. The tunnels were used by Viet Cong soldiers during combat as well as for housing, hospital, food, and more.
I’m a bit claustrophobic and wasn’t able to climb through too much of the tunnel. But that tunnel was expanded for tourists, back then the soldiers were climbing on their bellies. The conditions of war is rough and it is very difficult for us to grasp what it was like with the present day historical site. But I hope the video provides you with some educational context and encourages you to come here to experience & learn for yourself. Respects to all the soldiers, both Vietnamese and American, that fought in this conflict.
If you’re coming to Ho Chi Minh, I absolutely recommend coming here. This is an important historic site to visit!
If you've made it this far, please help give the videos a thumbs up, thank you!
