Lancashire Interloper - 52322 on the Spa Valley Railway - 05/05/18
A few heads were certainly turned when the Spa Valley Railway had announced the seasonal visit of the Lancashire & Yorkshire A Class 0-6-0 No. 52322, making the visit to Kent from the East Lancashire Railway. The loco will be visiting the Railway until the Summer, and her first running days took place over the first Bank Holiday weekend in May. The loco would take charge of three trips between Eridge and Tunbridge Wells West, operating to their one-train service.
This video captures the 0-6-0 in beautiful sunshine as she heads through the High Wealds on the 5th of May.
Shots included:
- Nonchalantly passing Lealands, heading away from Groombridge
- Passing Pokehill Farm Crossing
- Heading out of High Rocks, beginning the ascent of the 1 in 88 climb to Tunbridge Wells West

A Visit to the Spa Valley Railway - 9/7/2011
On the 9th July 2011, I visited the Spa Valley Railway, which runs for around 5 miles between Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent and Eridge in East Sussex. The line is often overshadowed by the nearby Bluebell, and is a very young line. Despite it being a recent addition to heritage lines, it has already opened it's full potential length with the opening to Eridge in East Sussex completed in March 2011, allowing cross bridge interchange with trains to London Bridge.
In service on the day of my visit were RSH 62 Ugly and Class 37 37254, with the Jinty 47493 in light steam at Tunbridge Wells West. The timetable was altered slightly due to the first train being 15 late of Tunbridge Wells and a wedding party to High Rocks Inn with some of the advertised 37 trains being Ugly and vice versa.
This video is more of a record video so there are less line side shots and more station shots, as well as a short piece of the new extension to Eridge. Shots in the video are:
Ugly at Pokehill Crossing (oh and sorry for the whistle making me jump, must learn not to get scared at noises so easily!)
Ugly returning near Groombridge Distant Signal
Ugly and the 37 on a bridge near High Rocks
Ugly arriving back into Groombridge
Arrival into Eridge alongside the London -- Uckfield main line
And a station shot at Eridge.
The Spa Valley Railway is a excellent line, and was well worth my travel from South Wales despite it's relatively small length, and I would more than recommend you visit the line if you are in the area. It shows off a southern English country branchline excellently and has friendly staff, as well as a good selection of locos. Also if you book in advance like I did, you can get there and back via London and the Underground for only £23!
Thanks to JBTEvans for company, the man at the riding centre for help after accidentally going down the wrong road trying to find Pokehill, and it was nice to meet Youtuber GWSR55 (I think it was, apologies if wrong, will look for your video later) at Groombridge.
Spa Valley Railway Summer Sulzer Diesel Gala 2016
The Spa Valley Railway held their annual diesel gala over the period of Thursday 4th - Sunday 7th August 2016, this year, featuring a range of Sulzer locomotives.
Included in this video are visiting locomotives:
Class 14 D9537 from the East Lancashire Railway
Class 25 D5185 from the Great Central Railway
Class 26 D5310 from the Grand Central Railway
Class 31 31289 from Northampton and Lamport Railway
This video also features various shunting movements, including Cedric Wares 09026 , recently entered preservation after residing at Lovers Walk Depot, Brighton for many years. The gala also saw many resident locomotives in action:
Class 33 33063 R J Mitchell
Class 207 (Non Passenger Move) 1317
Class 09 09026 Cedric Wares
Class 10 D3489 Colonel Tomline.
Many thanks to the Spa Valley Railway for making this excellent weekend happen.

The Tunbridge Wells Push-Pull! 33063 on the Spa Valley Railway 25/7/2017
In place of Class 207 DEMU no. 1317, BR Class 33 no. 33063 worked a push-pull set on Tuesday 25 July 2017 while operating the Spa Valley's standard purple timetable; the push-pull arrangement was necessary owing to there being no run round facilities at Eridge. The train was formed of Class 101 driving trailer no. 54408, which allowed a brakesman to sit in the cab and radio instructions to the 33 driver when the train was being propelled, with Mk1 BCK no. 21214 positioned between the trailer and the locomotive. Also notable in the shots around Tunbridge Wells West is BR Class 31 no. D5518, which was being delivered for the Diesel Gala the following week.
Shots included:
Broadwater Lane (10:30 ex-Tunbridge Wells West)
Groombridge (13:20 ex-Tunbridge Wells West)
Lealands Straight (14:00 ex-Eridge)
Tunbridge Wells West (11:55 ex-Tunbridge Wells West)
With thanks to the Spa Valley staff and volunteers for making the operation of the 33 propelled train, and consequently this video, possible.
Hope you enjoy!
A Ride on the Spa Valley Railway in Kent
Today young George Timperley and I are taking a journey on the Spa Valley Railway. He knows a thing or two about heritage trains.
The Spa Valley Railway is a standard gauge heritage railway that runs from Tunbridge Wells West railway station in Tunbridge Wells to High Rocks, Groombridge, and Eridge, where it links with the Oxted Line. En-route it crosses the Kent and East Sussex border, a distance of 5 miles, along the former Wealden Line between Tunbridge Wells Central and Lewes. The railway headquarters is at Tunbridge Wells West railway station.
