Free Solo Rock Climbing - Will Stanhope in Squamish, BC, Canada
Free solo rock climbing is climbing walls without ropes. Will Stanhope explains the difference between rock climbing and free solo climbing. Will is a professional climber and enjoys both types of rock climbing. He is based in Squamish, BC, Canada and does regular trips around the world to climb. Will explains how free soloing is not about pushing your abilities to the limit but more climbing within your means to enjoy the freedom on the rock.
In this video Will is showcased free solo climbing on The Chief in Squamish. The wall is 1,000 ft to the valley floor. The climb follows a crack splitting a wall on the North face of the Chief and requires a number of technical maneuvers at the top. The climb is ranked a 5.11c in rock climbing ratings. A difficulty that many people with rock climbing experience would find very difficult, not to mention completing without ropes.

The Chief and Shannon Falls, Squamish, BC, Canada
For Sunshine Coasters, off-coast hikes like the Chief in Squamish are doable as a day trip.
My friends and I took the early ferry from Langdale and made the 40-minute drive on highway 99 to Squamish. We parked at Shannon Falls Provincial Park and hiked to the falls before continuing on to the connecting trails and to the Chief.
The Chief has three peaks and we hiked each of them! The first two peaks have spectacular views of Howe Sound, Squamish, and beyond. The third peak is a bit in the trees but there are still some rewarding views.
We started our hike fairly early (7.50am) and we were only the second car in the parking lot. By the time we were back down at 1pm, the parking lot was full with people driving around looking for a parking spot.
Going up the trail early, the trail wasn’t busy, but on our way down, it was a constant stream of people heading up.
The hike is all uphill! Lots and lots of steps. Nature’s stair-master! Pack lots of water (at least two litres per person) and dress for the the weather. And pack loads of snacks, too!
Enjoy this video.
Enjoy your hike.
Thanks for watching,
Val

2019 Squamish Climbing - Diedre 5.8
In May 2019 I visted Squamish and got to climb Diedre (5.8) on the Apron. Combined pitches 2 and 3 to make it 5 pitches instead of 6. After the Broadway ledge we linked on Granville Street (5.8) for another 4 pitches. All in, 9 pitches of granite awesomeness. Thank you Squamish Rock Guides and Tony McLane for a great day!
(note to self - use a helmet mount instead of a chest mount)

Jake and I finally took the trip north to Squamish, BC to see what all the fuss is about. Well, the bouldering up there is just as good, if not better, than everyone says! Sadly we were only able to stay for 3 days, but we got a solid taste of the climbing, and we'll definitely be back for more!
HUGE shout out to Alan and George for giving us a tour, and inviting us to come climb with them! It was great fun meeting you guys, let's do it again sometime!
We got on a lot of routes, but didn't quite climb as hard as we would have liked. But that's okay! There's plenty of time to go back and get on some harder problems, they aren't going anywhere! Until next time, Squamish!

Last September my home-boy Dag and I set out the climb a route up the Chief called Angels Crest. We began before sunrise and climbed late into the day. It was breath-taking, scary as shit and fun as fuck.
