USA: CALIFORNIA: MOURNERS GATHER FOR FUNERAL OF SONNY BONO
Natural Sound
Hundreds of mourners gathered in Palm Springs, California, on Friday to bid farewell to U-S lawmaker and entertainer, Sonny Bono.
Bono's current family, along with ex-wife Cher, were joined by people from Hollywood, and representatives from Washington.
Bono died in a skiing accident on Monday.
A somber Cher arrived at Saint Theresa Catholic Church in Palm Springs, California, on Friday afternoon accompanied by daughter Chastity.
They joined hundreds of others from the entertainment and political arenas, to remember the life of Sonny Bono.
Cher, ex-wife of entertainer-turned-lawmaker Bono, cut short a trip to London to be at the funeral.
Bono's life was cut short in a skiing accident last Monday, just as he was hitting his stride in a second-term as a U-S congressman.
A colour portrait of Bono placed near the altar of the church was an image that for many, represented what they will remember most about the man.
The jovial entertainer, rose to pop music and television stardom as songwriter and singer alongside former wife Cher.
After later becoming mayor of Palm Springs, he went on to be elected to Congress, representing the area.
Mourners who filled the funeral pews included U-S speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, former Vice President Dan Quayle.
As colleagues, they paid tribute to Bono as the outsider who came to Congress in 1994 as something of a joke, but came to earn the respect of fellow Republicans, and Democrats, as an able politician.
California Governor Pete Wilson and Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt -- representing President Clinton -- also attended.
As a choir sang Amazing Grace, a military honour guard carried Bono's flag-draped, mahogany casket into the church.
The two-term congressman from Palm Springs died at the Heavenly Ski Resort in South Lake Tahoe, where he was on holiday with his wife, Mary, and their children - daughter, Chianna, 6, and son, Chesare, 9.
Bono was killed instantly when he plowed into a pine tree on an intermediate slope.

Fond farewells were bid to U-S lawmaker, and former entertainer, Sonny Bono at a funeral service in Palm Springs, California, on Friday.
Bono's current wife and children, along with ex-wife Cher, were joined by representatives from Washington.
The 62-year-old died in a skiing accident on Monday.
Singer and actress, Cher, arrived at Saint Theresa Catholic Church in Palm Springs, California on Friday afternoon accompanied by daughter Chastity.
She joined hundreds of others, from entertainment and political circles, to remember the life of Sonny Bono.
Cher, who was formerly Bono's wife, cut short a trip to London to attend the funeral.
She was joined by Bono's current wife Mary, and her two children.
The two-term Republican congressman died on Monday when he hit a tree on an intermediate slope at the Heavenly Ski Resort in South Lake Tahoe.
He was on holiday with his family at the time.
The tragedy came just as Sonny Bono was hitting his stride in his second term as a U-S congressman.
Bono went from citizen, to entertainer, to mayor of Palm Springs and then on to Congress as a representative of Southern California.
Mourners came from the entertainment industry, where Bono rose to pop music and television stardom as songwriter and singer alongside former wife Cher.
They also came from Washington D-C, including House Speaker Newt Gingrich, a 100-member congressional delegation, and Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt - representing President Bill Clinton.
They paid tribute to Bono, who as the outsider who came to Congress in 1994 as something of a joke, went on to earn the respect of fellow Republicans, and Democrats as an able politician.
A military honour guard carried Bono's coffin, draped by the U-S flag.
He was remembered during the service as someone who could be counted on as a loyal friend.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
When he was with you, he was with you and not off with somebody else. His mind was with you, his thoughts were with you and he showed a genuine interest and concern in your presence, in what you had on your mind. That's how he was single-minded, how he was single-hearted.
SUPER CAPTION: Reverend David Andel
And it is that sense of friendship that many gathered here believe will be Sonny Bono's lasting legacy.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
He was somebody who was, in a sense, a friend of everybody. A friend of many, many people and peacemakers are friends of most people. They have very, very few enemies.
SUPER CAPTION: Reverend David Andel
Bono will be buried later on Friday with military honours.

Breaking News: Wildfire spreads in California
Nearly 1,500 firefighters Monday evening battled a rapidly spreading fire in the steep forests east of Sacramento, one of 11 major wildfires burning in California.
The King Fire in El Dorado County swept through an estimated 8,600 acres, a jump from the 3,900 acres reported earlier in the day, and containment dropped to 5% from 10% as the fire spread in the high heat. The fire is located in a canyon of the south fork of the American River, northeast of the community of Pollock Pines.
The King Fire caused 160 mandatory evacuations. Thousands of Californians have been forced to flee wildfires burning across the state in the past several days, including one in Northern California, near Mt. Shasta, that fire officials said quickly damaged or destroyed 100 structures Monday.
Hundreds of firefighters were trying to contain that fire, which ignited Monday afternoon near the town of Weed in Siskyou County, about 10 miles from Mount Shasta. Cal Fire spokesman Daniel Berlant said more than 300 acres were scorched and more than 100 structures damaged or destroyed in just a few hours.
An evacuation center was set up at the county fairgrounds in Yreka, and a section of Interstate 5 was shut down for a time because of the fire.
Fanned by high winds, the fire burned a Catholic church and damaged a lumber mill. Sheriff's deputies went door-to-door to evacuate the town and nearby Carrick and Lake Shastina.
Firefighters are battling at least 11 major fires in the Golden State, where hot, dry weather has exacerbated conditions caused by a record drought. In addition to destroying homes and forests, the wildfires have been spewing unhealthy smoke into the air, prompting air-quality alerts in portions of the state sweltering under high temperatures and low humidity.

We've seen a lot more fires, and with those fires, more and more people are at threat. Every day we continue to see new fires ignite, forcing hundreds to evacuate, said Berlant. Historically, September and October are the months we experience our most damaging wildfires. Fall is the peak for us. Temperatures start to go down … but we start to see winds pick up and conditions are at their driest.
The Courtney Fire near Yosemite, which started Sept. 14, had burned just 320 acres as of Monday evening, but is blamed for destroying at least 33 homes, 28 outbuildings and 17 vehicles, as well as forcing the evacuation of 300 homes and at least 1,000 residents, Cal Fire said. By nightfall it was 35% contained.

California wildfire evacuates 160; Nevada gets smoked
Firefighters are experiencing extreme fire behavior due to drought and low fuel moisture, Cal Fire said in a Monday update. A Red Flag Warning for high fire danger remains in effect through Tuesday evening for the mountains and foothills of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties due to hot temperatures and low humidity. The public is urged to be extra cautious outdoors in order to help prevent additional fires.
CalFire alone has responded to more than 4,800 wildfires this year, 1,000 more than average. That doesn't include fires handled by federal officials.

Marimba Linda Xelaju: Guatemalan Marimba Music from Maryland
Marimba Linda Xelaju performs traditional Guatemalan marimba.
Speaker Biography: Marimba Linda Xelaju is family group that honors both tradition and innovation in its interpretation of the Guatemalan marimba. In Guatemala, playing the marimba has traditionally been a male pursuit. But Robert Giron has chosen to share his love and knowledge of the marimba with his daughters as well as his son, and the cherished music of his homeland today continues within a new context and community. In 1995, Giron had a beautifully ornate marimba hand-built in Guatemala by Nojobel Salazar, and brought it to the United States. The whole family plays this fine instrument at once. Robert Sr. and his son Robert play treble. His daughters Beverly and Jennifer play melody and harmony. Marimba Linda Xelaju has performed extensively throughout the Washington D.C. area venues including the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, the Museum of the American Indian, and at the National Zoo.
