WORLDWIDE: PEOPLE AROUND WORLD WATCH HONG KONG HANDOVER TO CHINA
English/Nat
Hong Kong was handed back to China in a blaze of colour with full pomp and ceremony on Monday.
But the celebrations were not just limited to the former colony and China, as people around the world held parties and festivals of their own marking the end of British rule.
One of the few places where celebrations were almost non-existent was in Taiwan, whose reaction to the handover was very low key.
The lowering of the flag at Hong Kong House in London, marked the transition of power back to China on Monday, signalling the end of British rule in the colony.
Unlike the events in the colony itself, the flag was lowered with little ceremony.
The new Hong Kong flag will be raised on Tuesday morning, making the start of a new era for Hong Kong.
At the London Arena, an exhibition venue, thousands of people attended a party.
A huge screen mounted on the wall beamed in the lowering of the British flag, signalling the end of 156-years of British rule.
Among the entertainment was Chinese opera, lion dances, dragon races and a pageant on stilts.
The venue itself had been decorated to resemble Hong Kong's famous thoroughfare, Temple Street.
Many were proud to be able to witness the handing back of the colony.
But others felt torn.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I've mixed feelings really, I think it depends on which view you take. From the western point of view its probably bit sad and a bit nervous but from the Chinese point of view I think they feel justice has been done from a historical perspective.

London's Chinatown was also busy, despite the overcast day and bad weather.
Most people appeared excited about the prospect of Hong Kong, once more being under Chinese rule.
Crowds gathered to watch on a video screen the formal handover ceremony broadcast live from the colony.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
As an ethnic Chinese I'm very proud today that Hong Kong is returned to China.

And the parties continued around the globe.
Handover celebrations in Macau, the Portuguese colony which also lies in the shadow of China, were swinging.
To these people the handover has a special meaning as Macau will be returned to China in December 1999.
Line dancing was the order of the day, while others enjoyed the spectacle.
In the street people had set up their own somewhat smaller clock and counting down the seconds they revelled in the street.
Cleanly handover here is seen as the road to a brighter future.
Despite the boycott by U-S Secretary of State Madeleine Albright of the installation of Hong Kong's new Chinese-appointed legislature, there were celebrations back in the capital, Washington.
A host of Chinese-Americans and Washington's diplomatic corps watched as yet another chapter closed on the British Empire.
A toast to the future of the colony was given, the mood upbeat and positive about Hong Kong's future under Chinese rule, with the British Ambassador putting on a brave face.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I think the Hong Kong community, which was nervous in the eighties, was nervous when this deal was negotiated in 1984, and there was some capital flight and some people flight out of Hong Kong. I think the confidence of the Hong Kong community has greatly increased since then.
SUPER CAPTION: Sir John Kerr, British Ambassador
But there were mixed feelings at a parade in New York.
Some banners echoed a concern which Taiwan itself is worried about, that the island will be next on China's hit list.
But not all felt despondent about Hong Kong's return to China, and the dragon dancers provided festive colour for the gathered crowds.
Events in San Francisco were more low key, with little going on in the streets.
