Canterbury, a cathedral city in southeast England, was a pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages. Ancient walls, originally built by the Romans, encircle its medieval centre with cobbled streets and timber-framed houses. Canterbury Cathedral, founded 597 A.D., is the headquarters of the Church of England and Anglican Communion, incorporating Gothic and Romanesque elements in its stone carvings and stained-glass windows.
Canterbury is a historic English cathedral city and UNESCO World Heritage Site, which lies at the heart of the City of Canterbury, a local government district of Kent, England. Canterbury lies on the River Stour.
The Archbishop of Canterbury is the primate of the Church of England and the worldwide Anglican Communion owing to the importance of St Augustine, who served as the apostle to the pagan Kingdom of Kent around the turn of the 7th century. The city's cathedral became a major focus of pilgrimage following the 1170 martyrdom of Thomas Becket, although it had already been a well-trodden pilgrim destination since the murder of St Alphege by the men of King Canute in 1012. A journey of pilgrims to Becket's shrine served as the frame for Geoffrey Chaucer's 14th century classic The Canterbury Tales.
Canterbury is a popular tourist destination: consistently one of the most-visited cities in the United Kingdom, the city's economy is heavily reliant upon tourism. The city has been occupied since Paleolithic times and served as the capital of the Celtic Cantiaci and Jute Kingdom of Kent. Many historical structures fill the area, including a city wall founded in Roman times and rebuilt in the 14th century, the ruins of St Augustine's Abbey and a Norman castle, and the oldest extant school in the world, the King's School. Modern additions include the Marlowe Theatre and the St Lawrence Ground, home of the Kent County Cricket Club. There is also a substantial student population, brought about by the presence of the University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University, the University for the Creative Arts, and the Girne American University Canterbury campus. Canterbury remains, however, a small city in terms of geographical size and population, when compared with other British cities.

Canterbury - Tour to Cathedral of Canterbury
Canterbury Cathedral in Canterbury, Kent, is one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England. It forms part of a World Heritage Site. It is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, currently Justin Welby, leader of the Church of England and symbolic leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion; the archbishop, being suitably occupied with national and international matters, delegates the most of his functions as diocesan bishop to the Bishop suffragan of Dover, currently Trevor Willmott. Its formal title is the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Christ at Canterbury.
Founded in 597, the cathedral was completely rebuilt from 1070 to 1077. The east end was greatly enlarged at the beginning of the twelfth century, and largely rebuilt in the Gothic style following a fire in 1174, with significant eastward extensions to accommodate the flow of pilgrims visiting the shrine of Thomas Becket, the archbishop who was murdered in the cathedral in 1170. The Norman nave and transepts survived until the late fourteenth century, when they were demolished to make way for the present structures.

CATHOLIC CHURCH - Exemplary Excommunication / From the film Becket
Solemn excommunication scene from the classic film Becket, starring Richard Burton as Archbishop Thomas Becket, Peter O'Toole as King Henry II of England, and John Gielgud as King Louis VII of France. In this scene, Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Becket excommunicates Roger de Pont L'Évêque, the archbishop of York, along with Gilbert Foliot, the bishop of London, and Josceline de Bohon, the bishop of Salisbury.
Saint Thomas Becket (also known as Saint Thomas of Canterbury, Thomas of London, circa 1118 -- 29 December 1170) served as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 until his murder in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170 by assassins believed to be operating for King Henry II of England. He is venerated as a saint and martyr by both the Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican denomination.
Following Becket's death, the monks prepared his body for burial and discovered that he had worn a hairshirt under his archbishop's garments—a sign of penance.
Not long after, the faithful throughout Europe began venerating Becket as a martyr, and in 1173 — barely three years after his death on 21 February 1173 — he was canonised by Pope Alexander III in St. Peter's Church in Segni.
On 12 July 1174, in the midst of the Revolt of 1173--1174, Henry humbled himself with public penance at Saint Thomas's tomb as well as at the church of St. Dunstan's, which became one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in England.
Becket's assassins fled north to Knaresborough Castle, which was held by Hugh de Morville, where they remained for about a year. They were not arrested and neither did Henry confiscate their lands, but he failed to help them when they sought his advice in August 1171. Pope Alexander excommunicated all four. Seeking forgiveness, the assassins traveled to Rome and were ordered by the Pope to serve as knights in the Holy Lands for a period of fourteen years.
If the Catholic hierarchy of today took their Faith and their pastoral duties seriously, as did Saint Thomas Becket, many in high places would not be committing so many abuses and inflicting so much harm to the Church and to Humanity. Politicians such as U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, and others, rabid supporters of the crime of abortion and aberrosexual pseudo marriage, would have been unmasked and shown as the frauds and corrupt officials that they are.

Anglican, Vatican Choirs Unite for Papal Mass
The Westminster Abbey Choir joined the pope's personal choir on Friday for a special papal mass at the Vatican. The performance at St. Peter's Basilica was seen as a historic event that reflected increasing unity between the Anglican Church and the Catholic Church.
The Anglican Westminster choir is perhaps the most illustrious of its kind. Last year, it performed at the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.
In 2010, it performed during Pope Benedict XVI's visit to the abbey, and it was the pope himself who was behind the decision to invite the choirboys to Rome. The pope also specified that he wanted the Anglican choir to unite with his personal Sistine Chapel Choir, rather than alternating performances.
Today is the first time the pope's 500-year-old choir has allowed any other group to sing with it, let alone one from the breakaway Anglican Church. Anglicans split from Rome in 1534 and historically have maintained their distance.
However, as today's performance indicates, Pope Benedict is trying to bring Anglicans back where he thinks they belong: Rome. It is interesting to note the purpose of this special papal mass is to grant newly appointed Catholic archbishops a woolen stole, a symbol of their communion with the pope.
The symbolism, location and overtones of today's mass are an indicator of what is coming. The Trumpet has forecast for decades that the Roman Catholic Church will bring its Protestant daughter churches back under the authority of the pope.
Pope Benedict has already taken major steps to coax conservative Anglicans back to Catholicism and will continue to do so. Watch for more signals that the Anglican Church and other Protestant churches are reuniting with Rome. To understand more, read our article The Church That Swallowed a Church on theTrumpet.com

Archbishop of Canterbury on Egypt church bombing
(16 Apr 2017) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: AP CLIENTS ONLY
UK POOL - AP CLIENTS ONLY
Canterbury - 16 April 2017
1. Britain's Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby entering Canterbury Cathedral
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Justin Welby, Britain's Archbishop of Canterbury:
Indeed today is a rare day in Easter services, because today the Eastern and Western services celebrate Easter at the same time. Doesn't happen very often, and so today across Egypt, but most poignantly at St. George's Church, Tanta and St. Mark's Church, Alexandria (both of which were targeted in attacks last week), God's people have already gathered to worship the one who was dead and is now alive. Seven days after the horrendous bomb attacks on those Christian communities, the resurrection was this morning proclaimed afresh and experienced.

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Justin Welby, Britain's Archbishop of Canterbury:
Christians in Egypt live surrounded by bombs and terror. We and those we love know the grim, grey moments of illness, suffering, arguments, poverty, ill health mental and physical, prison, guilt and failure. We experience a world of pain and despair, grief and death. But the words Jesus says on that first Easter day, he says to you and me now. To each of us, to listen, to take hold of within our hearts: 'do not be afraid'.
4. Welby leaving
STORYLINE:
