The ELO Experience Rock Aria @ Stamford Corn Exchange - 10th February 2018
Stamford Festival of Floats, June 29th 2013
Once again the people of Stamford turned out in their thousands to cheer on the Festival parade of Floats organised as usual by Stamford & District Kiwanis. The streets were lined as the 18 floats departed the Recreation Ground in the town centre in bright sunshine. They were led off by the bands of Stamford Brass and Yarwell & Nassington Band closely followed by a noisy, colourful array of groups including C S Ellis, One Touch Football, St George's School, Stamford Transition Town, Queen Eleanor School, Mean Valley Roller Derby, Welland School of Dancing, Chater Lodge, Homebase, Burghley House, Pantomime Players, Rutland Radio, Girl Guides, Movie Makers Kids, Starbright Youth Theatre, Stamford Foodbank, Wonderland Theatrical productions.
The floats paused for breath in Red Lion Square before passing the judges at Browne's Hospital where commentary was given by Rutland Radio's Rob Persani. .Eventually they returned to the Rec having expended enormous energy on the route as everyone cheered and applauded their progress.
When they arrived at the Rec they and the assembled masses of Stamford were treated to a number of highly energetic and graceful displays which featured Carnival Drums, Bluecoat TaeKwon Do, One Touch Football, Welland School of Dancing, Corn Exchange Performance, Wildcats Academy, Desert Dancers, Zumba with Fernanda where many of the audience were convinced to have a go and enjoy themselves. During the displays we were treated to a flypast from the Battle of Britain squadron and at 5:12 precisely the Red Arrows flew over the Rec to give an amazing display.
Eventually the time arrived for the all important prize giving and this year the winners were:
Festival Directors Award Welland School of Dance
Best School St George's School
Best Commercial Homebase
Best Club Starbright Youth Theatre
Hanson Cement Jubilee Year Award Wonderland Theatre Productions
Cummins Newage AVK SEG Mean Valley Roller Derby
Most Entertaining Float Pantomime Players
Best Turned out Vehicle C S Ellis
Special Merit Award Queen Eleanor School
Best Overall Girl Guides
The sun shone throughout the day and the people of Stamford were once again generous in their support for collections made by Stamford & District Kiwanis in support of local Stamford good causes. Many of these good causes were represented on the Rec during the day including BCKA Kick Boxing, Stamford Chess Club, Evergreen Trust, Help for Heroes, Tumble Tots, Stamford Free School. British Legion
With support from the police, fire service and St John Ambulance the day passed without incident, and eventually everyone returned home for a well earned rest looking forward to next year's excitement.
