Colorado Experience: The Stanley Hotel
Widely known as serving inspiration for Stephen King’s 1977 novel, The Shining, The Stanley Hotel’s legacy goes beyond a history of paranormal activity. When Freelan Oscar Stanley arrived in Estes Park in 1903, he was not looking for a Hotel location, but instead the climate cure for his bout with Tuberculosis. After recovering, Stanley – of Stanley Steamer fame among others—decided to open a Hotel with every luxury catered to his circle of New England elite. Travel the haunted halls and discover the architectural glory of the infamous hotel that influenced National Parks and sparked early tourism.

Hotel that inspired The Shining! (Stanley Hotel Estes Park, Colorado)
Join along as we visit the hotel where Stephen King stayed when he came up with the idea to write The Shining! Located in Estes Park, Colorado. It is allegedly haunted and has been used in the tv series version of The Shining and also Dumb and Dumber.
“The Stanley Hotel is a 142-room Colonial Revival hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, United States. Approximately five miles from the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, the Stanley offers panoramic views of Lake Estes, the Rockies and especially Long's Peak. It was built by Freelan Oscar Stanley of Stanley Steamer fame and opened on July 4, 1909, as a resort for upper class easterners and a health retreat for sufferers of pulmonary tuberculosis. The hotel and its surrounding structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Stanley Hotel served as the inspiration for the Overlook Hotel in Stephen King's 1977 bestselling novel The Shining and as the filming location for the 1997 TV miniseries, also written by King. Today, the hotel features a restaurant, spa and bed-and-breakfast, and provides guided tours.”

The Stanley Hotel - In A Colorado Minute (Week 245)
--- ---
The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, is known for its prime location overlooking mountain peaks of the Rocky Mountain National Park, and for being the home and inspiration to Stephen King as he wrote his novel The Shining.
Some people may also be aware of the politicians, royalties and other celebrities who have stayed in the hotel since its opening in 1909. While this is not the hotel where Stanly Kubrick filmed the movie The Shining, it was used for filming Stephen King's miniseries The Shining and the film Dumb and Dumber.
Right now there is a contest (open to anyone) going on to design a hedge maze inspired by Kubrick's The Shining. The deadline for the contest is January 31 and the opening of the maze is scheduled for April 30th, 2015 (during the 3rd annual Stanley Film Festival). More information:
The historic hotel resides at 7,500 feet and is supposedly haunted...
It's also a great place to watch the elk migration in fall... and as of this winter, I'll also remember it as the place where Scott and I spent our 19th wedding anniversary. This trip came as a total surprise to me, which made the whole experience even better.
The hotel is truly lovely with so many old details and styles honored (except for: what's with the TVs playing football in the Whiskey Bar?), the old photographs and paintings, the creepy long hallways and distorting mirrors. The food and drinks at the Cascades Restaurant and the Whiskey Bar were delicious and the staff was great.
Stanley Kubrick's The Shinning plays on one of the TV channels all day and all night. They also offer various tours of the hotel (including ghost tours), which you can enjoy without being a guest. By the way, the hotel is dog-friendly. However, Whiskey didn't get to go on this romantic little trip. Last but not least, we had a killer view from our room.
The only real catch was that it was -30 C (-22 F) that night and the old windows couldn't keep the heat in or the cold out. But the staff provided all the chilly guests with space heaters that fixed room's temperature quicker than we could taste all the whiskey at the bar (there are over 900 different kinds).
All in all, I highly recommend a stay at The Stanley Hotel. And I'm saying this without being sponsored. However, I'd be happy to shoot another more detailed video (after all, I was there for a 19th honeymoon, not a video shoot) if the hotel would provide me with a free room... ;-)
The song featured in this video is called It's Enigma Time written and performed by my friend Jason Matherne (aka Goonygoogoo Productions), who I hope will have time soon to write some new tunes...
Also, to everyone else who produces their own music: please send me songs I can use in my videos for free. My archive is starting to run low and I would love to discover and promote more talented musicians!

Lucy Moved Door at Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, CO Part 2
We had a GREAT time at the hotel this past summer. We really enjoined the tours, particularly Tiv's (sp?) night tour. Lucy closed the door for her twice, my husband who was standing by the door c said it for really cold before it started to move. We went back the next day and I left flowers for Lucy and talked for a bit and asked for her to close the door. After that I was talking pictures and stayed seeing an orb through the lens down the hall, by the door. I was trying to get a picture, then I tried video and started to hear a creak. I thought it was the floor creaking above, until I saw the door start to move! I started to get up from the floor and called my husband Tim over. (He was by the restrooms). It kept moving and stopping. I was so happy, I only wish I hadn't called Tim over, because it was when he was behind me the door slowed and stopped. It has taken me by surprise though, if there's a next time I will know to stay calm and just smile. Here is the video. I sound silly, I was nervous about sharing, but decided it was just too cool off a moment! Thanks for a great vacation!
If you have not been on the tour or have seen the room or door, what you should know is the flour is carpet, the door is low and sticks tightly when open. You real need to pull to get it to start to move. It's not a light door, there is no breeze down there. My husband and I were the only two down there, there was a group in the upper balcony upstairs that had not made its way down to the main hall or the lower level with us.
I have the video from when we first opened the door and asked her to move the door. I will upload it and put link in, it is part 1. Nothing had happened yet, but for those who want to see that part of the story I'll post it. (PS we got some great pictures while there as well.)

The Haunted Stanley Hotel-See the Spirit children at play
This was on a tour we took at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Co. The hotel has been deemed one of the top Five Most Haunted Hotels in the US.
On the tour, we were told that if you hold a dumb bell sucker in your hand with the stem up the spirit children would play with it.
This was a young girl in our group that was holding one of the suckers that just started going crazy!!! I tried and tried to duplicate the action and could not. So, I'll let you be the judge.
Be sure to like the video.....:) of course....only if you do. :)
