Apple Harvesting in Thanedar, Himachal Pradesh with Banjara Camps and Retreats
Do you know which village turned Himachal Pradesh into India's 'Apple State'?
Samuel Evans Stokes of Philadelphia arrived in Thanedar, India in 1904 on a spiritual quest and turned Himachal Pradesh into an Apple state. The first saplings of the ‘Delicious Red’ apples were planted in Thanedar in 1916 and rest, as they say, is history. The five saplings have now grown into an apple economy of more than Rs 4,000 crore in Himachal with around 1.5 lakh families associated with it, mainly in Shimla, Kullu and Kinnaur districts.
If you visit Thanedar in Sep-October, you can experience apple harvesting in full swing.
So, ready to plan your trip?

The Morchella Esculenta (Guchi) is a wild mushroom which grows in deep himalyan forests (Upper Himachal Region) .Morschella, the true Morels belong to the rare genus of mushroom family, which is found in upper Himalays in April to Sept Period. It grows naturally and has not been commercialy cultivated due to its rare and distinctive chracterstics .
In Himachal it is found in the hills of Shimla , Kinnaur , Kullu , Sirmaur , Chamba districts among other places.
Guchi finders set out in late March with sling bags looking for this wild mushroom . Some remain away for weeks and return with bags full .
Guchi is not immediately sold .The mushrooms are strung in a thread like necklaces and dried for a few days .This reduces the moisture and is now ready to be eaten .
Guchi is often bought by buyers directly from farmers in their villages who then sell it at a higher price in markets across the state and northern India .

Apple Orchards and Himachali homes in the winter-time, Jubbal
Having earned the fame as Apple State, Himachal Pradesh is poised to claim the distinction of being a fruit state not only in the country but worldwide. But very few people really know how apple came in India and whose effort have provided us with the sweet and delicious apple we eat now days. Samual Evan Stokes was the person who introduced apple crop in the hills around Shimla.
It was during a visit to America in 1915 that Samuel Stokes heard about the new strain of apples patented by the Stark Brothers nursery in Louisiana called the Red Delicious. He bought a few saplings and planted them at his Barobagh orchard in Thanedar in the winter of 1916. Five years later his mother sent him a consignment of saplings of the Stark Brothers Golden Delicious Apples as a Christmas gift. The first apples bore fruit a few years later and were sold in 1926.
They were an instant hit. The divinely sweet taste and the inviting colour had the Indian market going crazy over them. Their popularity even spurred locals into planting Apples, rather than their usual crops of potato and plums. Soon the demand for the Kotgarh apples sky-rocketed and orchards cropped up all over the valley of Himachal Pradesh, to meet this demand.
It is from these first few saplings that the sweet delicious Apples of Shimla and the Golden Delicious of Kinnaur became popular and Himachal Pradesh grew to become one of the largest producers of the fruit.
Jubbal is a town and a nagar panchayat in Shimla district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.
Jubbal, located at 31.1094667°N 77.6629967°E has an average elevation of 2200 metres (7220 feet). A small beautiful hill town, it is famous for its apple orchards and the Jubbal Palace. Jubbal is a perfect holiday destination with a combination of vast landscapes, thick woods, and splendid buildings. Two eyes are not enough to see the beauty of this place! Aristocratic in its entirety and exquisitely beautiful like only a Princely State can be, Jubbal stands testimony to all that is royal with its mesmerizing sceneries and exotic vistas. Located at an elevation of 1901 meters, the town of Jubbal is a beautiful retreat engulfed in plush greenery and dense deodars. The crystalline stream of the Pabbar River running along the town's side only but adds to its already omnipresent sheen. The land of the royal family of Jubbal, the town is virtually unexplored and hardly ever crowded, making it an ideal spot for your much needed break from the routine.

Himachal Pradesh
Himachal Pradesh (Hindi: हिमाचल प्रदेश [ɦɪmaːtʃəl prəd̪eːʃ] ( )) is a state in Northern India. It is spread over 21,495 sq mi (55,670 km2), and is bordered by Jammu and Kashmir on the north, Punjab on the west and south-west, Haryana and Uttarakhand on the south-east and by the Tibet Autonomous Region on the east.
Himachal Pradesh is famous for its abundant natural beauty. After the war between Nepal and Britain, also known as the Anglo-Gorkha War (1814–1816), the British colonial government came into power. In 1950 Himachal was declared a union territory, but after the State of Himachal Pradesh Act 1971, Himachal emerged as the 18th state of the Republic of India. Hima means snow in Sanskrit, and the literal meaning of the state's name is In the lap of Himalayas. It was named by Acharya Diwakar Datt Sharma, one of the great Sanskrit scholars of Himachal Pradesh.
