Storybook land ride through - Disneyland 1988
This is a clip from our trip to Disneyland in 1988.
Here's a complete ride through of StorybookLand back in 1988.
It's a Small World - Disneyland - Anaheim, California - Complete Ride
Embark on the happiest cruise that ever sailed through pastel scenes from around the globe. Hear the angelic voices of cherubic dolls singing a timeless ode to global harmony. it's a small world celebrates a simple, but powerful, idea. If we view the world through the wondrous eyes of a child, we'll all realize how much we have in common, and the world will be at peace. Come join the children's hopeful song.
Sit back, relax and enjoy a nearly 15-minute cruise around the Seven Seaways canal surrounded by bright colors, cheerful music, larger-than-life toys and singing dolls dressed in traditional regional costumes.
Designed by legendary Disney artist Mary Blair, the settings are as spectacular and whimsical as the dolls. Their simplicity and inventiveness recall the wide-eyed creations of a child. The sets are designed to resemble a fantasy world lovingly crafted out of construction paper, ribbon, glitter, buttons, fabric and papier-mâché.
Float past scenes representing:
•The Polar Regions
•The British Isles
•Western Europe
•Eastern Europe
•The Middle East
•Asia
•Africa
•South America
•Under the Sea
•The South Pacific
•The United States
The voyage concludes with a grand finale featuring all of the world's children. Now dressed in white, the children sing and play together as one.
From toy soldiers to ballerinas to vaqueros to Chinese acrobats, you see more than 300 animated dolls representing over 100 regions from around the world. Disney Legend Alice Davis painstakingly researched and designed individual costumes for each doll, inspired by the traditional wardrobe of each culture.
The fun begins before you even board your boat for a trip around the world. The kinetic attraction façade, complete with spinning flowers and whirligigs, features icons depicting famous world buildings.
Tick. Tock. The highlight of the façade is the animated 30-foot-tall clock tower. With much commotion and drama, every 15 minutes the clock tower opens up to display a multinational parade of 24 animated figures. Once the procession ends, 2 toy jesters appear to herald the current time.
Written and composed by the Academy Award® winning team of brothers Richard Sherman and Robert Sherman, the song it's a small world has become one of the most well-known tunes of all time. The infectious melody is sung in the native language of the respective dolls and is orchestrated using instruments indigenous to each region — including Scottish bagpipes, Peruvian reed flutes and Tahitian drums.
Walt Disney originally envisioned using the national anthems for each country. He quickly discovered that while the world may one day sing in perfect harmony, our national anthems will always be sung to different tunes. Walt asked the Sherman Brothers to write a single song to avoid a musical cacophony.
Personally supervised by Walt Disney, it's a small world was created for the 1964-1965 New York World's Fair in honor of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
Attracting more than 10 million visitors, it's a small world was such a smash hit that when the World's Fair ended, Walt had it shipped piece-by-piece to Disneyland Park, where it reopened on May 28, 1966. The rededication ceremony featured children from around the world pouring water from their native land into the Seven Seaways.
Some familiar new faces debuted on February 6, 2009 with the addition of dolls representing select Disney and Disney·Pixar characters, along with the colorful new Spirit of America scene.
Due to its immense popularity, it's a small world has been replicated in every Disney Resort around the world.
When the holidays near, it's a small world is transformed into it's a small world Holiday. During this special time of year, the classic it's a small world song is mingled with traditional holiday tunes, regional holiday decorations brighten up the ride, and thousands of festive lights adorn the attraction façade. It's worth a trip to Disneyland Park just to see the dramatic difference!

Sailing Ship Columbia POV at Disneyland Park
The Sailing Ship Columbia, located at the Disneyland park in Anaheim, California, is a full-scale replica of Columbia Rediviva, the first American ship to circumnavigate the globe. The Columbia has entertained park visitors for over fifty years, including its twenty-four year role as Captain Hook's pirate ship, the Jolly Roger, in the park's popular nighttime show, Fantasmic!. Its passengers embark on a scenic, 12-minute journey around the Rivers of America.
Passengers wait for the 110-foot-long (34 m) ship, which departs every 25 minutes, inside a sheltered area called Frontier Landing, located in Frontierland. The waiting area the 84-foot-tall (26 m) Columbia shares with the Mark Twain Riverboat. And, historic United States flags are displayed at the attraction's entrance.
Passengers board the full-scale replica of the original sailing ship Columbia by climbing steps, also known as the brow, up onto the main deck. Once on board, they can visit a nautical museum below deck, which shows what life was like for the 1787 crew. In addition to the galley, pantry, dry stores, and sick bay, there are quarters for the crew, bosun and bosun's mate, first mate, captain, and surgeon.
Once the ship casts off, it begins its voyage around the Rivers of America. The ship, which has three masts and rigging but rarely unfurls its sails, is powered by a compressed natural gas engine (formerly a Marine Detroit Diesel 2-stroke). It runs along the same track as the Mark Twain, hidden by green dye in the water.
The captain provides a tongue-in-cheek running commentary as he calls orders to his crew, while recorded background music plays a selection of nautical songs, such as Blow the Man Down. As the ship passes Fort Wilderness on Tom Sawyer Island, a Columbia cast member fires two 12-gauge blanks from one of the ship's ten cannons. The Fort also had a cannon that used to fire back.
The sailing ship Columbia operates only on the park's busiest days, or when the Mark Twain is not operating. The attraction usually opens at 11am and closes at dusk. On evenings when Fantasmic! is being performed, the ship, which plays the role of the Black Pearl in the show, will also close at dusk. When the ship is not operating, it is docked at Fowler's Harbor, near the Haunted Mansion attraction.

Disneyland is an American theme park in Anaheim, California, owned and operated by the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts division of The Walt Disney Company. It was dedicated with a press preview on July 17, 1955, and opened to the general public July 18, 1955. Disneyland holds the distinction of being the only theme park to be designed and built under the direct supervision of Walt Disney himself. As of 2005, the park has been visited by more than 515 million guests since it opened, including presidents, royalty and other heads of state.[1] In 1998, the theme park was re-branded Disneyland Park to distinguish it from the larger Disneyland Resort complex. In 2007, more than 14,800,000 people visited the park making it the second most visited park in the world, behind the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.[2]
The concept for Disneyland began one Sunday, when Walt Disney was visiting Griffith Park with his daughters Diane and Sharon. While watching his daughters ride the Merry-Go-Round he came up with the idea of a place where adults and their children could go and have fun together. His dream would lie dormant for many years.[4] Walt Disney's father helped build the grounds of the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago. This perhaps gave Disney the creative spark whence Disneyland originated. The Midway Plaisance somewhat apart from the Exposition grounds included a cheaply constructed set of individual Country areas from around the world and areas representing various time periods of man; it also included many rides including the first Ferris wheel, sky ride, a passenger train that circled the perimeter, Wild West Show, etc. Although the 1893 World's Fair was meant only to last a summer in Chicago, in Southern California the weather was accommodating to a Fair Grounds of stucco buildings that would otherwise disintegrate in the rain, snow and ice of other climates. One can see the resemblance of a Land filled with rides and a fairgrounds with differently themed areas to the Disneyland created 60 years later in the 1950s as the population of America for the first time shifted West into desert climes. [5].
While many people had written letters to Walt Disney about visiting the Disney Studio, he realized that a functional movie studio had little to offer to the visiting fans. This began to foster ideas of building a site near his Burbank studios for tourists to visit. His ideas then evolved to a small play park with a boat ride and other themed areas. Walt's initial concept, his Mickey Mouse Park, started with an 8 acres (0.012 sq mi; 0.032 km2) plot across Riverside Drive. Walt started to visit other parks for inspiration and ideas, including Tivoli Gardens, Greenfield Village, The Efteling, Tilburg , Playland, and Children's Fairyland. He started his designers working on concepts, but these would grow into a project much larger than could be contained in 8 acres (32,000 m2).[6]
Walt hired a consultant, Harrison Price from Stanford Research Institute, to gauge the proper area to locate the theme park based on the area's potential growth. With the report from Price, Disney acquired 160 acres (0.250 sq mi; 0.647 km2) of orange groves and walnut trees in Anaheim, southeast of Los Angeles in neighboring Orange County.[7]
Difficulties in obtaining funding prompted Disney to investigate new methods of fundraising. He decided to use television to get the ideas into people's homes, and so he created a show named Disneyland which was broadcast on the then-fledgling ABC television network. In return, the network agreed to help finance the new park. For the first five years of its operation, Disneyland was owned by Disneyland, Inc., which was jointly owned by Walt Disney Productions, Walt Disney, Western Publishing and ABC.[8] In 1960 Walt Disney Productions purchased ABC's share (it had earlier bought out Western Publishing and Walt Disney). In addition, many of the shops on Main Street, U.S.A. were owned and operated by other companies who rented space from Disney.
Construction began on July 18, 1954 and would cost USD$17 million to complete, and was opened exactly one year later.[9] U.S. Route 101 (later Interstate 5) was under construction at the same time just to the north of the site; in preparation for the traffic which Disneyland was expected to bring, two more lanes were added to the freeway even before the park was finished.[7]

Disneyland Park - Rare Time Lapse Construction Footage
Building Walt's Dream: Disneyland Under Construction presents recently unearthed time-lapse photography of Disneyland's construction, arranged by land. Providing audio for the footage are Imagineer Tony Baxter, Disney archivist Ed Hobelman, and Walter Magnuson, who are familiar enough with the content to supply real insight in territory that's expectedly more narrative than a typical audio commentary.
Tony explains in the narration, the footage, believe it or not, was found in a can inside a Pennsylvania salt mine. Yeah. It was a film canister with the word “Disneyland” scribbled on the front, and someone found it and returned it to Disney.
The material is presented in three parts: first, an opening section where we get to see Walt Disney walking the property. Second is the time-lapse footage, one segment for each land. And finally, there is some video of Walt, Harper Goff, and company overseeing the construction of the Jungle Cruise. Walt was famous for preserving his and his team’s thought processes (he hired stenographers to take detailed notes in every story meeting during the creation of the animated movies, and saved as many original sketches in the archives as he could), and here he realized that the construction of Disneyland would one day be something to study and reference back to. So, he set up numerous cameras and observation towers around the property to film the construction footage in time-lapse as it was happening. What we see here is an American historical landmark in all stages of construction.
