PARIS: PROTESTS AGAINST PETROL PRICES CONTINUE
French/Nat
More French petrol stations put up empty signs on Thursday as a French truckers' protest over the high cost of fuel spread, with farmers threatening to block the Channel Tunnel and taxi drivers disrupting Paris traffic.
French truckers have sealed off roads to nearly 100 of the country's oil refineries and fuel depots to protest soaring fuel prices and high taxes.
Other professions, including taxi drivers and farmers, have joined the expanding strike.
Dissatisfied farmers left a meeting on Thursday with Agriculture Minister Jean Glavany and said they would continue protesting.
Parisian taxi drivers executed a new Operation Escargot: driving at snail's pace into the city from the airports to slow down traffic.
Other driving professions, such as emergency vehicles and driving instructors, joined the protest.
They were joined by their counterparts in Lyon and Marseille.
With fuel growing scarce in a growing number of French regions, some drivers crossed into neighbouring countries to fill their tanks.
Transport Minister Jean-Claude Gayssot asked protesters to think of the potential disastrous effects on the national economy, which has rebounded in past years after a decade-long stagnation.
Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin was sharp with the truckers, saying the government would go no further and there would be no more negotiations.
The prime minister's tough stance came after his Green Party allies said government concessions broke promises to promote environmental policies.
The Greens say France should favour rail traffic to carry freight over the more polluting trucks.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
We the taxi drivers in Paris and France are striking because the government has introduced prohibitive fuel taxes. And we are demanding social benefits to balance out these prohibitive prices.

Places we visit in Copenhagen
We didn’t plan on only having one day in Copenhagen. We planned on having the whole weekend but decided last-minute to leave Copenhagen early on sunday for a daytrip to Sweden which left us with one evening and one day in Copenhagen.
Copenhagen is a very walkable city. Exploring the city by bicycle is also a good option. With designated bicycle lanes and traffic lights, getting around Copenhagen is safe and easy. For the most part, the majority of the hotels and attractions are within a reasonable walking distance from each other. Our hotel was centrally situated so we could see all the main attractions in the city: Tivolipark, Tivoli Food Hall, Breakfast at Espresso House (Rådhuspladsen), Rådhuspladsen, Stroget, Kongens Nytorv plein, Royal Danish Theater (1874), Magasin Du Nord, Nyhavn, Amalienborg, Kastellet, little mermaid (den lille havfrue), Rosenborg Slot, Rundetaarn, Christiansborg Palace (entrance fee: 95 Kr. = 12,7 Euro) and Christianshavn.

BELGIUM: BRUSSELS: FUEL PRICES PROTESTS LATEST (2)
French/Nat
Negotiations to end the petrol blockades in Belgium have resumed at the Transport Ministry in Brussels.
But union leaders insist they will intensify action if their demands to reduce fuel prices are not met.
They are keen to meet Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt, saying Transport Minister Isabelle Durant does not seem competent enough to authorise their demands and understand their situation.
Since this morning blockades by truckers across Belgium have been multiplied after negotiations between unions and transport minister failed to produce any result late Monday.
The country's biggest oil refinery in Feluy, near town of Charleroi, is still blocked today by representatives of the Febetra (Belgian Federation of Transporters) union and more trucks are on their way .
The trucks there are preventing any supplies from being dispatched
The nearby road leading to the town of Nivelles is jammed and police have been brought in to divert traffic.
In Brussels trucks began blocking gas stations on Tuesday morning and maintaining a stranglehold on main thoroughfares in the capital, Brussels.
Truckers also slowed traffic on a freeway linking Brussels with the northern port of Antwerp.
The main freeway to Luxembourg was jammed and the highway from Brussels to the
French city of Lille was blocked at the border.
Taxi drivers joined truckers protesting outside the ministry of transport in Brussels later on Tuesday.

Nothing concrete came out of the talks yesterday with Minister Durant. And the professional organisation the UPTR walked out.

''If the Prime Minister commits himself to agreeing - because it would take time to actually implement - to professional fuel prices (especially for transport workers), we will stop our protests.''

SOUNDBITE: (French) For us it's simple, we consult our base tonight and if there's not
a solution after tomorrow night's cabinet meeting, we will take action.

Parliament

FRANCE: PARIS: TRUCKERS CALL OFF STRIKE AFTER 5 DAYS
French/Nat
French truckers have agreed to call off their strike, after five days of transport chaos and fuel shortages.
The CFDT union representing most of the drivers declared an official end to the walkout on Friday afternoon.
A compromise deal was reached with road haulage employers after a six hour bargaining session late on Thursday night
After five days of road chaos, unions have agreed to get their trucks on the move again.
The largest truck drivers union - the CFDT - says it has achieved all that it can through the strike action.
They signed a formal agreement ending the walkout in Paris on Friday afternoon.
They've been joined by other union groups, who sealed a deal giving the truckers an initial six percent pay rise.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
We're declaring that we are going to sign with the Transport Federation an agreement we've negotiated (to end the strike)
SUPER CAPTION: Jehan de Marne, UFT leader
SOUNDBITE: (French)
We've got to make sure that our clients will agree with higher tariffs which will be necessary because of this agreement, and secondly and no less importantly at last we have a social dialogue going on about this profession.
SUPER CAPTION: Jean-Paul Deneuville UFT member
The CFDT leader declared his satisfaction with the deal, saying it reflected the prevailing mood of the strikers.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
The union of the CFDT have decided to sign the agreement which has ben worked out yesterday evening. It's a decision that satisfies us, and it has very positive aspects in the text. But it also reflects the prevailing mood of truck drivers.
SUPER CAPTION: Joel Le Coq, CFDT leader
The roadblocks which have crippled French highways began to be dismantled on Friday, as truckers got back into their cabs and headed home.
It's a welcome end to the strike which has blocked the flow of goods and left petrol stations dry.
Neighbouring countries blasted France for being unable to head off a third transport strike in as many years.
The knock-on effect of the walkout was felt across Europe - with drivers and tourists stranded by blockades on every major highway in France.
Now those on both sides of the dispute are pleased that the confrontation has been successfully diffused.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
We considered perhaps staying here (at the barriers). It's not exactly an historic agreement but we've got to look on the positive side and not the negative - so that's why we've gone back to work
SUPER CAPTION: Michel Beau, CFDT regional leader, Lille
And for the international truck drivers caught up in the dispute, there was delight that the French blockades were over.
SOUNDBITE: (Italian)
I'm trying to get back to my house - I'm going home.
SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop Italian truck driver
But not all of the French truckers approve of the deal backed by the CFDT.
Some unions still think that they should have held out for a better pay award.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
We're thinking about the people on the salaries - my mates. Do you agree with the position of the CFDT?
(Truck drivers shout: No!)
SUPER CAPTION: Serge Heklinger, Regional director of FO Lille
But the leading unions' nod appears to be enough to signal a comprehensive end to the walkout.
On Friday afternoon roadblocks were coming down across France, as truckers abandoned their roadside pickets.
But it's still thought that about 40 percent of the nation's petrol stations are dry.
