Hanoi (Vietnamese: Hà Nội, Hán Tự: 河内) pronunciation (help·info), estimated population 6.232.940 (2008) [1], is the capital and second-largest city of Vietnam. From 1010 until 1802, with a few brief interruptions, it was the political centre of an independent Vietnam. It was eclipsed by Huế during the Nguyen Dynasty as the capital of Vietnam, but Hanoi served as the capital of French Indochina from 1902 to 1954. From 1954 to 1976, it was the capital of North Vietnam.
The city is located on the right bank of the Red River. Hanoi is located at 21°2′N 105°51′E / 21.033°N 105.85°E / 21.033; 105.85Coordinates: 21°2′N 105°51′E / 21.033°N 105.85°E / 21.033; 105.85, 1760 km (1094 mi) north of Ho Chi Minh City, formerly called Saigon.
On May 29 2008, it was decided that Ha Tay province, Vinh Phuc's Me Linh district and 4 communes of Luong Son district, Hoa Binh is merged into the metropolitan area of Hanoi from August 1 2008[2]. Hanoi's total area increased to 334,470 hectares divided into 29 subdivisions[3] with the new population being 6,232,940[3]. The Hanoi Capital Region (Vietnamese: Vùng Thủ Đô Hà Nội), a metropolitan area covering Hanoi and 6 surrounding provinces under planning will have an area of 13,436 square kilometers with a population of 15 million by 2020[4]. October 2010 will officially mark 1000 years of the establishment of the city.
As the capital of Vietnam for almost a thousand years, Hanoi is considered to be the cultural centre of Vietnam, where every dynasty has left behind their imprint. Even though some relics have not survived through wars and time, the city still has many interesting cultural and historic monuments for visitors and residents alike. Even when the nation's capital moved to Hue under the Nguyen dynasty in 1802, the city of Hanoi continued to flourish, especially after the French took control in 1888 and modeled the city's architecture to their tastes, lending an important aesthetic to the city's rich stylistic heritage. The city boasts more than 1,000 years of history, and that of the past few hundred years has been well preserved.[10]
Hanoi hosts more cultural sites than any city in Vietnam, including over 600 pagodas and temples.[11]
The Old Quarter, near Hoan Kiem lake, has the original street layout and architecture of old Hanoi. At the beginning of the 20th century the city consisted of only about 36 streets, most of which are now part of the old quarter. Each street then had merchants and households specialized in a particular trade, such as silk traders, jewellery, etc. The street names nowadays still reflect these specializations, although few of them remain exclusively in their original commerce. The area is famous for its small artisans and merchants, including many silk shops. Local cuisine specialties as well as several clubs and bars can be found here also. A night market (near Đồng Xuân market) in the heart of the district opens for business every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening with a variety of clothing, souvenirs and food.
Some others prominent places are: The Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu), site of the oldest university in Vietnam 1070; One Pillar Pagoda (Chùa Một Cột); Flag Tower of Hanoi (Cột cờ Hà Nội). In 2004, a massive part of the 900 year old citadel was discovered in central Hanoi, near the site of Ba Dinh square. [12]
A city between the rivers, built from lowland, Hanoi has many scenic lakes and sometime is called city of lakes. Among its lakes, the most famous are Hoan Kiem Lake, West Lake, Halais Lake (Hồ Thiền Quang) in Vietnamese), and Bay Mau Lake. West Lake (Hồ Tây) is a popular place for people to spend time. It is the largest lake in Hanoi and there are many temples in the area. There are small boats for hire and a floating restaurant.
Under French rule, as an administrative centre for the French colony of Indochina, the French colonial architecture style became dominant, many examples remain today: the tree-lined boulevards (e.g. Phan Dinh Phung street), The Grand Opera House, The State Bank of Vietnam (formerly The Bank of Indochina), The Presidential Palace (formerly Place of The Governor-General of French Indochina), the cathédrale St-Joseph, and historic hotel Sofitel Metropole.

I was impressed by the clean city that I was in. There is a flower garden everywhere in a pleasantly arranged street without a common garbage, and it meets flowers and blue recordings everywhere. Dalat is also a tourist attraction among Vietnamese people. It is a place where family or lovers can find it easily. I am from the United States. I came to see my family on vacation. This is a really nice place. The landscape is very beautiful and the air is beautiful. This is a flower city, so I come here once a year. In the flower city of Dalat, you can see flowers and trees everywhere you go. Another name of Dalat that is surrounded by flowers in the past is the city of eternal spring. It may be natural for young people to find many places in Dalat where they can enjoy spring season, which is short and unfortunate.

Vietnam India Friendship Tree - Volume IV: Struggle & Victory
Vietnam-India friendship Tree' is a series on the India-Vietnamese friendship, exploring the similarities of the two countries, in terms of their history, culture, faith and beliefs. 'Struggle and Victory' highlights the struggle of the Vietnamese people against the French rule. Through rare file footage, the film gives a sense of the struggle of the Vietnamese people. During the Southern resistance against French colonialism, Nehru and Gandhi provided significant support, which extended to the time when American forces attacked Vietnam. Many demonstrations were held in Calcutta by the Communist Party of India, and the slogan Vietnam -- Tomar Naam, Amar Naam (Vietnam -- Your Name, My Name) became a household slogan. The film also shows how the warm relationship between the two countries became important for the Non Aligned Movement.

Vietnam Visions: Temples, Shrines, Holy Places
This third in the Vietnam Visions Series highlights temples, shrines and holy places in Vietnam - colorful spiritual structures, close to the earth, honoring the goddess, the lingua and yoni. Where East meets West, old meets new. So much past destroyed or ignored or not allowed. Yet images are full of light, sweet faces, animals, men, women and children, turtles and music, and hair. Buddhas, Quan Yins, Hindu dieties, the Virgin Mary, and icons of Cao Dai - a religion that includes Victor Hugo among its honories.
Cam Ranh Bay: My Ca Monastery (2006)
At Cam Ranh Bay, we go to visit the My Ca Monastery. In 2006, it was a restricted area, but we were able to get a close-up view.
Viet Nam holidays - Beautiful tropical beaches of Phu Quoc Island
Viet Nam holidays - Beautiful tropical beaches of Phu Quoc Island.
Phu Quoc lies south of the Cambodian coast, west of Kampot, and 40 km west of Ha Tien, the nearest coastal town in Vietnam.
Phu Quoc has been famous among travel experts as the most beautiful island in Vietnam. Although it has been a long-time tourist attraction, the island is quite under-developed and the roads here are such disasters. Either they have not been built at all or just half-way built and no one is actually working on building them. However, the beautiful beaches compensate for it all. And actually the road trip may turn out to be a memorable adventure.
Long Beach is the most popular beach with a lot of hotels and resorts along Tran Hung Dao Street. Not the most beautiful beach but you can find lots of entertainments and western restaurants here. Also close to the town center and the nicest place to watch the sunset.
Thom Beach is in the North of the island. A very beautiful beach but sadly kind of deserted. We came there in the afternoon and saw only a few locals. Since it is not touristic, trash is everywhere, which quite ruins the beauty of the nature. However, we still had a good time. A trade off for the very tough road we had to take to discover this beach.
Words can’t describe so you’d better go and discover these beaches yourself. Here are some travel info and tips I can give:
1. Time to visit: best is from December to April when there is a lot of sunshine, the sky is clear and blue. Rainy season is from July to November, which can be stormy sometimes so you may want to consider your travel schedule carefully.
2. Place to stay: check out Travelfish and choose which beach you want to stay. There are still several beaches I didn’t visit which included Dai Beach, another popular beach in Phu Quoc, hence no pictures above. Remember if you want to stay in Sao Beach, be prepared that there will not be many choices for restaurants or bars or even hotels. And it is costly too to go from the airport to Sao Beach by taxi.
3. Things to do: Here are a list of 10 things to do we saw in a local map for tourists:
Enjoy a sunset along the west coast (Long Beach and Dai Beach).
Dining on the sand at beautiful Sao Beach.
Visit a pepper plantation.
Take a boat trip diving or snorkeling the reefs.
View the splendor of Phu Quoc’s Cao Dai Temple.
Take a forest nature walk.
Enjoy the best deserted island beaches.
See the sunrise at Su Muong Pagoda.
Swim in mountain streams & waterfalls (May to November).
Visit the coconut tree prison.
But I would like to add 2 more things:
Take a bike trip on the coastal road around the island.
Do a night squid fishing trip.
4. Things to be aware of:
Protect yourself from the starving mosquitoes on the island! No joke!
If you’re not an experienced motorbike driver, don’t risk driving the coastal road by yourself. Hiring a Motorbike taxi can be a wiser choice.
Look out for the jellyfish!

Vietnamese Dinner Lemongrass Tofu & Clay Pot Shrimp at Lanterns Restaurant in Nha Trang, Vietnam
After a long train ride from Saigon to Nha Trang, we decided to reward ourselves with a tasty Vietnamese meal at a nice restaurant. Lanterns is one of my favorite restaurants in Vietnam, a place I discovered with my parents while traveling here in 2011. Initially I couldn't find where it was. I thought for sure I knew exactly where it was located given my previous visit only two years ago; however, it has since moved to a new location not far from the old one. It was absolutely packed when I came back here with Audrey for the first time which was hardly a surprise.

One of the reasons I love it so much (aside from the awesome food and service) has to do with contributions the restaurant makes around the community helping to feed those who are less fortunate and providing assistance for children at orphanages. Whenever we can, we like to support businesses that are involved in the community and give something back to those in need.
Our dinner consisted of Vietnamese lemongrass tofu and clay pot shrimp.
We had high expectations for the lemongrass tofu, a dish we first tried together while exploring the Mekong Delta region of Southern Vietnam.
The dish served at Lanterns didn't disappoint although it was quite different from the one we had previously with more of a sweet and sour taste. Although it was tasty, I preferred the dish we had while touring the Mekong Delta in a small restaurant on our way back to Saigon.
The caramelized clay pot shrimp was amazing! With every bite the sweet caramel flavor oozed through every morsel of shrimp we put in our mouths. It's hard to go wrong with anything that is caramelized.
Overall, the meal was fantastic and we plan on heading back soon to try their hot pot which we've heard is excellent. This is definitely a restaurant we recommend highly for both its fantastic food and dedication to help those less fortunate:
