Places to see in ( Nimes - France ) Temple of Diana
The Temple of Diana (Temple de Diane) is a Roman site in Nimes whose ultimate purpose remains a mystery, as does the origin of its name. Believed by some to have been originally built sometime during the reign of Augustus - others say in the 2nd century - it has been suggested that the Temple of Diana may have been a library.
Whatever its original function, this stunning site boasts well-preserved vaulted ceilings, grand archways and enticing passageways. Apparently, the reason for its excellent state is that the Temple of Diana was used as a medieval church, only to be damaged in the French Wars of Religion.
The so-called Temple of Diana was part of the Roman sacred complex but it was not a temple, rather it was a library that originally faced onto a portico that enclosed much of the spring sanctuary. The date is uncertain; some scholars suggest the first century, others the second. It was used as a church from the Middle Ages till the 16th century when it was damaged in the Wars of Religion.

Story: Temple of Diana exhibition
Location: London
Date: July 20 1999
Artists united in their interest in Diana, Princess of Wales have assembled an eclectic collection of work devoted to the socalled People's Princess at London's Blue Gallery.
The TEMPLE OF DIANA exhibition, which opened on Tuesday, brings together photographs, paintings, sketches and installations aimed at seeking intelligent responses to the issues raised by the life and death of the late princess.
The most controversial exhibit is Diana Family Portrait 1998, a photo by artist ALISON JACKSON which shows lookalikes of Diana and Dodi AlFayed posing with a child, to imagine how the couple might have looked had their tabloid romance blossomed into something more lasting.
Other artists such as HUGO RITTSON have taken their own personal contact with Diana as inspiration. Rittson has used a birthday card sent to him by the princess as the foundation for his entry. He believes the princess would have supported the exhibition.
The Blue Gallery has already been heavily criticised by those who claim to have known Diana. REVEREND TONY LLOYD, executive director of the Leprosy Mission, has denounced the exhibition as tacky and ludicrous.
That hasn't deterred art lovers from coming to see the collection among them Pet Shop Boys singer NEIL TENNANT, spotted leaving the gallery on opening day.

The Jardins de la Fontaine is a public park located in Nîmes , Gard . They are elaborated around the original Nîmes source. Their architectural organization also highlights two major ancient monuments of the city, the Temple of Diana and the Magne Tower. The Jardins de la Fontaine was one of the first public parks in Europe and is still one of the most remarkable today.
The Jardins de la Fontaine district developed in Gallo - Roman times and is one of the oldest in the city. Recent excavations have enabled to reach, near the traces of an indigenous popular area, rich mansion ii th century (Pasteur) and at the intersection of Jaures Boulevard and Rue Sauve, public building sumptuous whose use remains mysterious.
In the xviii th century , work to control the flow of the source have unearthed many relics from Roman times: a temple dedicated to Augustus , a theater ancient. The Gardens of the Fountain were made in 1745 on the basis of these remains. They made it possible to highlight two other Roman monuments having withstood the test of time particularly well, the Temple of Diana and the Magne Tower . The project was led by Jacques Philippe Mareschal , military engineer of King Louis XV and director of the fortifications of the province of Languedoc.
The Jardins de la Fontaine are listed as historical monuments by the 1840 list and, for the entire underground site and canal included, since 1991. They are now on the list of remarkable gardens in France , gardens benefiting from a label awarded by the Ministry of Culture. The entrance to the gardens is free and free. They are open from 7 h 30 to 22 h 30 in summer and 7 h 30 to 18 h 30 during the winter.

Places to see in ( Nimes - France )
Nîmes, a city in the Occitanie region of southern France, was an important outpost of the Roman Empire. It’s known for well-preserved Roman monuments such as the Arena of Nîmes, a double-tiered circa-70 A.D. amphitheater still in use for concerts and bullfights. Both the Pont du Gard tri-level aqueduct and the Maison Carrée white limestone Roman temple are around 2,000 years old.
Located between the sea and the Cevennes hills, Nîmes is one of the most attractive towns in Mediterranean France. The city was established by the Romans, on the edge of the Mediterranean plain, some twenty-five miles inland from the sea; and to this day, Nimes has the finest collection of Roman remains in France.
Apart from its Roman remains, Nimes is worth visiting for its attractive old town and its gardens, as well as its ideal location for discovering the Cevennes national park to the north or the renowned wetlands of the Camargue to the south – not to mention the large number of historic sites and other sights to be discovered in this part of Mediterranean France.
Nimes is located on the main Paris - Lyon - Barcelona route, and also on the Mediterranean coastal route between Italy and Spain. It is served by the A9 / E15 motorway and the A54 / E80 route from Marseille. It can be reached by direct TGV high-speed train from Paris, Lille, Strasbourg and Lyon. Nimes airport is served by only a few flights each day; but the city is fifty miles from the large airport at Marseille-Provence. Nîmes, capital of the Gard department, is a popular tourist destination, notably on account of its Roman remains, and its attractive old town.
First and foremost among the Roman remains are the Maison Carrée, the best preserved Roman temple anywhere, and the mighty Arena, one of three large Roman arenas in the south of France. Apart from these two major monuments of classical antiquity, Nimes has several other Roman remains, in particular the Temple of Diana and Tour Magne, a Roman tower that was once a part of the city's outer fortifications, and now stands at the top of the Jardins de la Fontaine, overlooking the town. The Nimes arena - though 2000 years old - is still used as a venue for events today, including concerts and French bull-fighting, a version of the Spanish tradition in which the bull is not killed.
The list of Nimes' Roman remains would not be complete without a mention of the imposing Pont du Gard, one of the finest remaining Roman aqueducts, ten miles to the northeast of the city. This remarkable structure was built by the Romans to bring water to the city. Apart from its Roman monuments, Nimes has an attractive and well preserved historic centre, with narrow streets and tree-lined boulevards typical of the south of France. The park of the Jardins de la Fontaine, laid out in 1745, is one of the oldest city parks in France, and a delightful area of greenery, fountains and shade on the edge of the old town. The cathedral of Notre Dame & St. Castor partly dates back to the twelfth century, but was largely rebuilt in later centuries - as were Nimes' other churches. Nimes has several small museums, the most notable of which are the Natural History museum, on the Boulevard Courbet, and the Archeological museum ; but both of these museums are in serious need of modernisation.

CELEBRATING ROMAN HERITAGE in NîMES, FRANCE! | South of France Travel Vlog (Grands Jeux Romains)
In France, the southern city of Nîmes has a reputation for being the Roman Cty of France thanks to the numerous architectural wonders that the city has inherited from its time in the Roman Empire long ago. Nîmes is very proud of all of this Roman heritage as an important part of their history, culture and the identity of the city in general. This goes from the big monuments such as the arenes de Nîmes (the Roman arena) to the Maison carrée, to the many random statues of Roman emperors scattered all around the city today.
For this reason, once a year, Nîmes hosts a big festival to celebrate this Roman cultural heritage, during which a big fight is held in the ex-gladiator arena in the centre of the city, many tents are set up to sell things, explain the roman history, imitate the lifestyle of the ancient Romans and it is tradition for everyone to dress up in Roman outfits!
