UK: END OF EUROPEAN DUTY-FREE (3)
English/Nat
It's the end of an era - from midnight on Wednesday the European Union will abolish duty-free shopping within its borders.
No longer will European travellers be able to purchase cheap duty-free products - they will now have to travel outside the E-U to get that.
And as the countdown towards midnight began, APTN joined British travellers aboard a ferry to France in search of the last of the duty-free bargains.
Nine years after E-U Ministers first agreed to the ban, it's finally coming into place.
At midnight on Wednesday travellers within the European union will no longer be able to purchase goods with a tax exemption.
Many consumers within the E-U are unhappy with this.
But ferry companies, operating in the region, say they will educate consumers on how to get the most out of the new E-U directive.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Like I think you can see behind me, I mean we are very busy. That's not unusual for this time of the year. I mean we've carried nearly 1.4 (m) million passengers this month alone and that's how the trade has developed. Our vessels are continually busy. We are going up to the high seas and as far as the holiday makers are concerned, yes there are some people here just to take advantage of the end of duty free. But of course tomorrow (Thursday) is the start of duty pay and we've now got to go into an education exercise as far as to tell the consumer that the good value continues. The big change is from today they can only buy one bottle of spirits 200 cigarettes. Tomorrow they can buy as much as they want and that's the big change.
SUPER CAPTION: Patrick Hollis, Hotel Services Director, P&O Stena
And as the count down began some travellers journeyed across the channel from Britain to make the most of their last chance to purchase duty-free goods.
Still there were mixed feelings even as they picked up the ferry company's last duty free items.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Really and truthfully I'm very upset that the duty free is stopping. There's 50 of us who've come on a coach today just come out especially to buy duty free.
SUPER CAPTION: Duty free shopper
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It will be very interesting to see what happens actually. There are various stories that they are going to keep prices down, but whether they will or not I don't know, probably, it will affect the ferry prices, but you know, we'll wait and see.
SUPER CAPTION: Duty Free shopper
But the demise of duty-free shopping won't wipe out opportunities for bargain hunting travellers.
Duty-free stores in European airports will stay open for people travelling to destinations outside the E-U, which are unaffected by the new ruling.
And the ferry companies have vowed to use the discrepancies in duty charges across the E-U, to bring advantages to their customers.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
The message today is that limits are scrapped and prices are held, so you can buy now, as much as you want at very attractive prices and when it comes to spirits that will be the same price as under the duty free regime, and tobacco prices although they would have gone up slightly, will still show a massive saving over U-K high street prices.
SUPER CAPTION: Ross Peters, Managing Director P&O Stena Line
Meanwhile the E-U commission says the abolition of duty free is exactly what's needed to spark true competition within the union.
And one shopper at a discount house in Calais, says the advantages are enormous.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
It doesn't affect these prices, for instance if you buy beer in duty free you are only limited to a certain amount, whereas you aren't limited to a certain amount in these shops and not only that it's all readily available.
SUPER CAPTION: Discount shopper

Renishaw Hall's vineyard was planted by Alexandra Sitwell's father, the late Sir Reresby, in 1972, and so this year it celebrates an incredible 40 years! Until 1986, it was certified as the most northerly vineyard in the world at 53 degrees 18 minutes north.
Renishaw Hall & Gardens offer informative vineyard tours and tastings throughout the year for groups of ten or more with our Vineyard Manager Kieron Atkinson, where visitors are taken through the cycle of the vineyard followed by an informal tasting session of the sparkling and white wine produced by Renishaw Hall's very own grapes.
Kieron's 2011 white wine won a national award this year -- the United Kingdom Vineyards Association (UKVA) awarded his Madeleine Angevine a bronze medal, proving that Derbyshire wine is on a par with those produced in the south of the country.
Call the events office on the details below to book or email enquiries@renishaw-hall.co.uk.
Sparkiling Wine is available priced at £19 per bottle and Regional Wine is available priced at £8.50 per bottle, which can be bought directly from the Renishaw Hall shop, open during the season from Wednesdays to Sundays, 10.30 - 4.30, or over the phone on 01246 432 310.

#217 Beavertown X Caravan Spresso | Imperial Espresso Stout 9.5%ABV (British Craft Beer)
Brewery - Beavertown X Caravan
Location - Tottenham Hale, London UK
Beer - Spresso Imperial Espresso Stout
Style - Imperial Stout
ABV - 9.5%
IBUs - 30
Reviewed on - 23rd March 2016.
Commercial Description - Like everyone with a soul, the first thing we think about every day is coffee, the solver of all life’s problems. Brewers are incredibly territorial, and each morning engage in the “Dance of a Thousand Filters,” a death match with only one loosely upheld rule – turn your back on brewing coffee and you will not get any coffee. Sometime this ritual can last minutes even hours while the jet black potion drips down into the waiting pot, under the gaze of a hundred waiting eyes. It has been said said (by Confucius, I believe*) that beer is food for ideas, and coffee is the fuel to make them happen. The two are something of a Ying and Yang, but share a discernable number of similar qualities, the most prominent of which being their intense and complex flavor profiles. With “Spresso” we looked to combine the best of two already incredible worlds and rituals, providing a full on espresso experience, in a hefty, well rounded Imperial Stout. We know something about beer, but when it comes to coffee, our long time friends at Caravan Coffee Roasters are the caffeinated captains of bean wizardry, and we brought them on board for the brew. After running tests and trials, a consistent pattern of feedback emerged – “MORE COFFEE.” So, when it came to brewing this beast we ended up infusing around 80 kilograms of coffee into the beer in two parts. Part of the wort was drawn off and infused with the first 40 kilograms of ground coffee at around 92 degrees Celsius. Then a month later we infused the fermenting beer with the remaining 40 kilograms as whole beans at around 10 degrees Celsius. It finally emerged from its coffee catacomb a full on, roasty, bittersweet beast with a subtle hickory and treacle richness. The perfect marriage of the two things that get us through the day. *We do not believe this.
