Kitty Hawk, Nags Head, Fort Raleigh(NC), US - Part 1
Please visit for full video and more free videos.
Kitty Hawk - Wright Brothers National Memorial, Kill Devil Hills, NC
Mile post 7.5 on U.S. Highway 158 Kill Devil Hills, NC
Wind, sand, and a dream of flight brought Wilbur and Orville Wright to Kitty Hawk, North Carolina where, after 4 years of experimentation, they achieved the first successful airplane flights in 1903.
With courage and perseverance, these self-taught engineers relied on teamwork and application of the scientific process. What they achieved changed our world forever.
Wright Brothers National Memorial commemorates 2 ingenious brothers from Dayton, OH who, in 1900, choose the sparsely populated area known as the Outer Banks to conduct a series of experiments that 3 years later resulted in the worlds first heavier than air, powered controlled flight.
The story of these brothers embodies the American ideal of hard work overcoming all obstacles.
Wilbur and Orville Wright were not just lucky bicycle mechanics but succeeded because of study and scientific experimentation.
Their story is the realization of a dream that had existed for centuries; it is not simply about building the first plane but rather about how they scientifically solved the problem.
It is a story about those who inspired and those who aided the brothers as well as the coastal area of North Carolina before, during and after the dream came to life.
The Wright Monument is the largest monument in this country built to a living person. Orville Wright attended the Monument dedication in 1932.
Jockey's Ridge State Park is located in Dare County on the Outer Banks. The entrance to the park, Carolista Drive, is in the town of Nags Head at milepost 12 on the Hwy 158 Bypass (South Croatan Hwy).
JOCKEY'S RIDGE is the tallest natural sand dune system in the Eastern US. It is one of the most significant landmarks on the Outer Banks, NC. Always changing, always beautiful...
The 384-foot boardwalk ends with a spectacular view of Jockey's Ridge. Along the tree-lined walkway are information panels describing the various plants and animals found around the dunes.
There is a bench on the overlook for visitors who wish to wait for their families playing on the dunes. Transportation to the top of the dunes may or may not be available until 7 PM pending availability of a vehicle and 24-hour prior notice.
The sand on the dunes is incredibly hot during the summer months. On average, the sand will be 25 to 30 degrees hotter than the air temperature.
On occasion, there are families that become separated while playing on the dunes. It's a good idea to locate a landmark everyone is familiar with, and make this your meeting spot.
Weather on the Outer Banks is a bit unpredictable. Lightning storms occur quite often during the summer months, especially in the afternoon.
Having fun in the outdoors means you may have a possible encounter with ticks.
Washington Baum Bridge, between Manteo and Nags Head
Fort Raleigh National Historic Site protects and preserves known portions of England's first New World settlements from 1584 to 1590.
This site also preserves the cultural heritage of the Native Americans, European Americans and African Americans who have lived on Roanoke Island.
The Elizabethan Gardens
The Elizabethan Gardens, located on this same site which the colonists first landed, is full of history and beauty in this tranquil setting on the shores of Roanoke Island.
History, mystery and fantasy are combined in these special gardens, which are a memorial to the first English colonists who came to North America in 1584-1587 and walked away through the dark forest into history as memorialized in Paul Greens symphonic drama, The Lost Colony.
For here and nowhere else, Sir Walter Raleigh made initial attempts to colonize the New World under Queen Elizabeth I. Truly this hallowed site is the birthplace of America.
Founded and supported by the Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc. and featured in many landscape books and calendars, The Elizabethan Gardens is one of the finest examples of gardens of this period.
Truly, it stands out as the crown jewel of Roanoke Island.

The Haunting of Ocracoke Island - Our Haunted Travels
The Haunting of Ocracoke Island
Sit back my friends and listen to the tales of this little island off the coast of North Carolina. There are many ghost stories and legends behind the haunting of Ocracoke Island.
Ocracoke is a village on Ocracoke Island, part of North Carolina's coastal Outer Banks region. The landmark 1823 Ocracoke Lighthouse overlooks the village and Pamlico Sound. Set in an early 1900s house, the Ocracoke Preservation Society Museum traces the island’s history. Nearby, the tiny British Cemetery contains the graves of WWII sailors. Silver Lake is dotted with boats, and shops and restaurants line its harbor.

John Lawson's Indian Town on Hatteras Island, North Carolina
Telling the history of any particular place usually involves the study of written sources: letters, notes, pamphlets, books, and similar tangible references. But few concrete sources have survived that describe the natives of North Carolina and remote locations like Hatteras Island in the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries. Those who attempt to write the history of Hatteras often find them-selves practicing a bard's art more than a historian's, adding unsubstantiated filler between the few facts available to complete the tale. Adding to these difficulties, Hatteras's fledgling and haphazard history is not only affected by the dearth of primary documents, but also by geography—specifically, the island's great distance from the mainland. Potential informants from Hatteras spent their day fishing in local waters for menhaden or rendering porpoises on the beach and seldom visited the mainland. They were a self-reliant people. Neither did the outside world often visit Hatteras, a needless expense for a twenty-six-mile trip by water to an island deemed of little value. Hatteras was isolated, remote, and of no great size, roughly thirty-three square miles with a small population. Furthermore, a skewed understanding of the island's natives, their descendants, and their eventual fate hampered this history as well. For these reasons and more, the history of Hatteras has been difficult to tell. 1 That history, however, is intimately linked to a native town that had been misplaced for centuries. John Lawson—Yorkshire native, early Carolina explorer, native ethnographer, and noted historian—demonstrated his respect for the Hatteras Indians and became the first European to rediscover them and their town when he traveled through the area between 1701 and 1709. Ind. Towne, which Lawson found and recorded on his map, published just before his death in 1711, is historically significant. The town was important not only to explorers like Lawson, but also to the later residents who may have called those natives family.

Ocracoke Island - Paranormal History Profile
Ocracoke Island
In July of 2006, we stopped at Ocracoke Island during our honeymoon road trip. This turned out to be the best mistake of our honeymoon, as we enjoyed the island greatly. Although this was before we were into paranormal research, we did find the island completely intriguing and were able to capture some of the interesting places in photographs.
In this video will will discus our experiences, the history of Ocracoke Island, and why we believe this location has so many reported paranormal claims.

Welcome to Global Ocean TV™, brought to you by The TerraMar Project.
I am today’s host, Rob Foos.
Here are today’s stories:
Shell Cleared to Drill in Arctic Ocean
The Obama administration cleared the way on Wednesday for Shell to start drilling in the Arctic Ocean this summer, but the safety restrictions it is imposing could slow the pace at which rigs strike oil. The authorization was widely expected, after the Interior Department gave conditional approval in May for the company’s long-delayed application to drill in the untouched waters of the Chukchi Sea off Alaska’s northwest coast.
Apalachicola's Disappearing Oyster
For many Southern Americans, especially those who reside in Florida or spend their summers vacationing on the northwest coast of the Sunshine State, the ideal oyster comes from Apalachicola Bay, a body of water about 160 miles east of Pensacola Beach and 75 miles southwest of Tallahassee, the state capital. But, there's a problem with oysters from Apalachicola Bay: They're getting harder and harder to find beyond the hyperlocal market.
Addicted to Antibiotics, Chilean Salmon Flops at Costco
Amid concerns of antibiotics overuse contributing to the development of drug-resistant superbugs, American consumers are increasingly demanding antibiotic-free meat and fish. That’s bad news for Chilean salmon farmers who are facing a bacterial outbreak and treating their fish with record levels of antibiotics — and losing the business of Costco and others.
Traveling With Blue Goose Passports
Conservationist Rachel Carson, who wrote many books, is most famous for the book Silent Spring, a book that looked at pesticides and their effect on wildlife and humans. She wrote this about the Blue Goose symbol in her introduction to the 'Conservation In Action series: If you travel much in the wilder sections of our country, sooner or later you are likely to meet the sign of the flying goose — the emblem of the national wildlife refuges.”
Public Alert Day to be Held for Offshore Drilling in the Atlantic
On Saturday, July 25th the members and volunteers of SODA (Stop Offshore Drilling in the Atlantic) will hold a Public Alert Day to inform people along the South Carolina coast of the dangers of seismic testing and offshore oil drilling. SODA members and volunteers will be posted all along the South Carolina coast from North Myrtle Beach to Sullivan’s Island, on the beaches and at businesses in various towns. Oceana will be in North Carolina and the group One More Generation will be holding a rally in Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta. It is shaping up to be quite a day.
Ancient Japanese Wetland Microbes Discovered Beneath the Sea
If you want to find some weird, undiscovered organisms, the sediments more than 2 kilometers below the ocean floor should be a good place to look. The heat and pressure are intense, and food is in short supply. But researchers have now obtained the first samples of microorganisms from these depths, and they turn out to be surprisingly ordinary. The cells are similar to microbes that live in a less demanding habitat on land: the soils in forests.
Shark Purses
In this episode of “WeirdFins,” all about strange stuff in the sea, and brought to you by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Kristin, in La Cañada, California, asks if it’s true that some sharks carry purses. The answer’s, yes, but it’s probably not what you’re thinking.

Bodie Island Makeover
Are you a lighthouse history buff? If so, you'll want to keep an eye on this Outer Banks makeover.
The National Parks Service is giving the 138-year-old Bodie Island Light Station a much-needed restoration, including taking out old lead paint and reinforcing the 10-flight spiral staircase for visitor use. NPS and Carolina Lighthouse Lens Works are also restoring the original first-order Fresnel lens, which has been used at Bodie Island since 1872.
Construction will take place throughout 2010, but the visitor center and bookstore remains open. For restoration progress updates, visit the NPS website:
