Airborne At The Bridge - John Frost Bridge, Arnhem, Holland
I hope you enjoy this video of John Frost Bridge in Arnhem, Holland.
I’ve always been keen to visit the bridge at Arnhem. The 1979 Richard Attenborough film A Bridge Too Far left an impression watching as a kid with my Father. The all star cast coupled with the epic battle scenes make it one of the great 70s war films in my view.
John Frost Bridge as it's now known who was the commander on the ground for Operation Market Garden.
This short video is a tribute to those on both sides and civilians who lost their lives during this part of WW2...
It also contrasts the peacefulness of Arnhem today with a snapshot of urban life in this beautiful Dutch city.

Rhine Bridge Arnhem, John Frost Bridge - Episode 2

English description: This bridge over the river Rhine, which connects the city of Arnhem with the south via the Nijmeegseweg, was formerly simply called 'Rhine bridge'. Now it's called the John Frost Bridge.
Market garden.
While the end of the Second World War seemed to be in sight, Arnhem became one of the worst hit cities in the Netherlands. Many know the feature film A bridge too far which shows how the allied armies experience their Waterloo with the large military operation Market Garden in Arnhem.
While ground troops invaded Limburg and Noord-Brabant, airborne troops had to conquer the bridges over the Maas, Waal and Rhine. On September 17, 1944, ten thousand English and Polish paratroopers landed on the heathland to the west of Arnhem. Initially it seemed to go well. The paratroopers advanced to Arnhem, but unexpectedly received strong opposition from German armored troops. For days, fierce fighting took place in and around the city. Only a small group of British paratroopers, led by Lieutenant Colonel John Frost, reached the Rhine Bridge and managed to hold it for four days, but the Allied army that had conquered the bridge at Nijmegen failed to advance to Arnhem urge. John Frost had to stop the fight and fled along the Rhine with the remaining troops at Oosterbeek.
Most of the historic buildings and churches were turned into ruins. After the war, the rubble was cleared. Some historic buildings could be restored. New houses, offices and shops were built on the open spaces. After years of reconstruction, the image of Arnhem's city center had changed completely.

75 years Remembering Market Garden
ZichtOp: Arnhem (NL) - John Frostbrug: a bridge too far.
Operation Market Garden (17--25 September 1944) was an unsuccessful Allied military operation. Initially, the operation was marginally successful, and several bridges between Eindhoven and Nijmegen were captured. However, Gen. Horrocks' XXX Corps ground force's advance was delayed by the demolition of a bridge over the Wilhelmina Canal, as well as an extremely overstretched supply line, at Son, delaying the capture of the main road bridge over the Meuse until 20 September. At Arnhem, the British 1st Airborne Division encountered far stronger resistance than anticipated. In the ensuing battle, only a small force managed to hold one end of the Arnhem road bridge and after the ground forces failed to relieve them, they were overrun on 21 September. The rest of the division, trapped in a small pocket west of the bridge, had to be evacuated on 25 September. The Allies had failed to cross the Rhine in sufficient force and the river remained a barrier to their advance until the offensives at Remagen, Oppenheim, Rees and Wesel in March 1945. The failure of Market Garden ended Allied expectations of finishing the war by Christmas 1944.

Friday 18 September 2009: in the afternoon the Massed Pipes and Drums Band is performing in the streets of the old heart of Arnhem. In the evening, about 7 pm they go in a slow march towards the Airborne square, to grace the real Market Garden Commemoration. You find everything about laying wreaths, speeches, national anthems of Poland, United Kingdom and The Netherlands (Mazurek Dabrowskiego, God save the queen, Wilhelmus), Dutch Hymn 293 Last Post, respectfull silence to the casualities and the reveille. The completion of the ceremony was at the Arnhem town hall, of which I taped the performance of the Massed Pipes and Drums Band.
Thanks to God for sending deliverance.
Thanks to those who lost their lives for the victory. Rest in peace!

The bridge is named after Major-General John Dutton Frost (1912–1993), who commanded the British forces that reached and defended the bridge during the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944. The bridge was featured in the 1977 film A Bridge Too Far, although a different bridge was used for the film.
