Canterbury - Tour to Cathedral of Canterbury
Canterbury Cathedral in Canterbury, Kent, is one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England. It forms part of a World Heritage Site. It is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, currently Justin Welby, leader of the Church of England and symbolic leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion; the archbishop, being suitably occupied with national and international matters, delegates the most of his functions as diocesan bishop to the Bishop suffragan of Dover, currently Trevor Willmott. Its formal title is the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Christ at Canterbury.
Founded in 597, the cathedral was completely rebuilt from 1070 to 1077. The east end was greatly enlarged at the beginning of the twelfth century, and largely rebuilt in the Gothic style following a fire in 1174, with significant eastward extensions to accommodate the flow of pilgrims visiting the shrine of Thomas Becket, the archbishop who was murdered in the cathedral in 1170. The Norman nave and transepts survived until the late fourteenth century, when they were demolished to make way for the present structures.

#104: Slideshow | Stonehenge & Canterbury | United Kingdom

The England Tapes #2: The Canterbury Tales (1985)
We didn't have a Chaucer as a travel guide, didn't even read the Canterbury Tales before, but a nice woman told us a lot about this beautiful old city and its outstanding cathedral, a magnificent masterpiece of Gothic architecture, so that we were happy when the guided sight-seeing tour was over and we could have a look on the hot spots of this beautiful place on our own.

Westgate Towers ~ Canterbury.
A quick tour of the Westgate Towers in Canterbury. With a few clips of The Pound bar area.
The Westgate is a medieval gatehouse approximately 60 foot (18m) high and is the largest surviving city gate in England. Built of Kentish ragstone c1380, it is the last surviving of Canterbury's 7 medieval gates, one of Canterbury's iconic landmarks.
The Tower is a scheduled ancient monument and Grade I listed. Visitors can explore its rich history and take in the spectacular views of the city from the battlements viewpoint. Also part of the museum are the original felons' cells built c1830 in the gaol extension and the c1907 police station cells on the ground floor as part of The Pound Bar & Kitchen.

Canterbury ~ Dane John Gardens
A historic park within Canterbury city's walls which dates back to 1551, and includes a mound which historical records prove was there in the first century AD. In 1790, local dignitary Alderman James Simmons laid out the park into formal gardens. In 1999, the City Council completed a million pound renovation of the park supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and local sponsorship. The City Walls and an avenue of lime trees provide a sense of enclosure and escape from the busy road and bustling shopping centre just a few yards away. There are excellent views over the city and towards the countryside from the top of the mound. There's a safe play area for children, a bandstand as a venue for traditional concerts throughout the summer and a fountain which provides a focus for the shaded walk along the avenue of lime trees.

Dane John Gardens Webpage:
Canterbury's most popular park has been transformed into attractive gardens with monuments and memorials, a bandstand for summertime concerts, a central fountain, a tearoom and children's maze. Stroll along the city walls which border one side of the gardens and wander up to the top of the Dane John Mound for an excellent view of the city. On the top of the mound is a monument commemorating Alderman James Simmon's gift of the gardens to the people of Canterbury. Many events are held in the gardens. Most weekends in the summer months there will be a band concert. Concerts range from Brass to Pop, Military to Rock with something to suit all age groups and tastes.
