Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial 25th Anniversary -- Last Patrol
The Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial is holding a series of events Oct. 26-27, 2012 to observe its 25th anniversary. Perhaps, the activity that garnered the most attention 25 years ago was The Last Patrol whose members walked to the city from the national Vietnam Veterans Memorial bearing the names of the Philadelphians lost in the war. Those names are entombed at the Memorial today.
Naming of the 65th Infantry Regiment Borinqueneer's Ave in Philadelphia, PA
Portion of Whitaker Designated as the 65th Infantry “Borinqueneers” Avenue
Philadelphia, PA – Oct. 24 – State Representative Angel Cruz applauds the General Assembly of Pennsylvania for enacting House Bill 1652 which was signed into law to designate a portion of Whitaker Avenue from its intersection with Roosevelt Boulevards to the point where it meets East Erie Avenue in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County as the 65th Infantry “Borinqueneers” Avenue.
To officially celebrate this historical moment, a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony will be held on November 7, 2014 at the Erie & Whitaker Avenues intersection at 12:00 p.m. Government dignitaries, community leaders, Post 840 and genuine Puerto Rican veterans from the Korean Conflict will be joining Rep. Cruz.
The Department of Transportation (PennDot) shall be responsible for erecting and maintaining appropriate signs and displaying the name of the highway to traffic in both directions.
The 65th Infantry Regiment is a Puerto Rican regiment of the United States Army which participated in World War 1, World War 2, and the Korean War. “The Borinqueneers is a nickname for the 65th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Division in the US Army, an all-volunteer Puerto Rican unit; The Regiment won four Distinguished Service Crosses and 125 Silver Stars and was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and the Greek Gold Medal for Bravery for its service.’
Over 62,000 Puerto Ricans joined the military during World War 11 and over 43,000 Puerto Ricans served in the Korean War. While in Korea, the Borinqueneers served in nine separate military campaigns giving their lives to serve their country.
Rep. Cruz sponsored the legislation, which was signed into law as Section 204 of Act 428 of 1945, known as the “State Highway Law,” authorizes the Secretary of the Department of Transportation to designate by letter, or to name, or number, State highways or any portion thereof.
“I deeply want to thank my fellow legislators for supporting HB 1652, and the governor for signing it into law. We have enacted a law that will serve as a daily reminder to our constituents of the military contributions to the fabric of our country by Puerto Rican soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom” – stated Rep. Cruz. “And, I also want to thank Congressman Bob Brady for cosponsoring the HR 1726 Bill – honoring the 65th Infantry Regiment with the Congressional Gold Medal.”
“It’s deserving that Rep. Cruz has honored the Borinqueneers by introducing the legislation that has lead to this memorable moment.” – Congressman Brady.
“We can’t wait for the 65th Regiment Borinqueneer survivors to celebrate the “Ribbon Cutting Ceremony,” for their memories to be captured by the audience and to be honored into the annals of our rich Pennsylvanian History. Thank you Rep, Cruz and all legislators for adding this beacon of light to our Community.” - George Perez and Juvencio Gonzalez, US Marines, Legislative Assistants, Members of the CGM National Initiative and Latin American Post 840 of the American Legion.
“This dedication will serve as a permanent daily reminder to thousands of Philadelphians of the sacrifices made by the Borinqueneers, their families and their communities, “ said state Sen. Mike Stack, who played a key role in convincing federal lawmakers to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the regiment. “Thanks to Representative Cruz for his effort in getting this bill through the legislature.”
Is This The Scariest Bridge In America?

2016 Veterans Day in Philadelphia Part 3
2016 Veterans Day in Philadelphia. The ceremony was organized by the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund in memory of 648 US service men lost their life in the Vietnam War.
IT IS OUR DUTY TO REMEMBER
The 2016 Veterans Day Ceremony organized by the Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund at Penn’s Landing attracted a large turnout of family members, friends, and the veterans of many wars including WW2, Korean War, Vietnam War, and most recent wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The general mood of the ceremony was patriotic and solemn as several generations, ranging from elementary to high school students to wheeled chair veteran of 91 years of age, gathered in one place. Veterans from all branches of the armed forces mingled, many on wheel chairs, many on walkers, assisted by family members, kept looking around for a familiar face from a distant past.
Many were apparently enjoying the reminiscence of war stories with their friends; others came, stood alone at some corners gazing into an endless horizon in a foreign land where their buddy tried to hang on to their last breath. Numerous family members, wives, sons and daughter who might have never met their fathers, inconspicuously wiping their tears while whispering and caressing the names engraved on the wall that could not hear, but remember the names forever.
The Philadelphia Vietnam Veterans Memorial is the eternal resting place for 648 American soldiers who lost their life during the Vietnam War, but soldiers from many different wars, can find solace at this memorial. At least once a year, on the Veterans Day, they come back to this location for a reunion like a “homecoming welcome” that they did not have. Very fortunate for the Republic of South Vietnamese veterans in the Delaware Valley, who are always welcome at this memorial to pay the American war dead and veterans, our deepest gratitude and respect. Thanks America.
After 41 years of refuge in the U.S., most of us are content with our life in this great country -- a life that none of us planned for. However, as the first generation of Vietnamese Americans, we are living in this country on borrowed time, because deep down inside, we are still being afflicted with an aching heart, longing for a return to our homeland where freedom still remains a distant memory.
Listen children! Our time in this great country is gradually coming to an end, but there are so much waiting for you to finish. The U.S. is your country, and you must promise to do your best to make us proud. Our last wish for you is that, you must work hard to excel in education, strive to be the best in whatever job you want to do. After that, take advantage of the endless opportunities this country provides to you and your family so you all can dream big and high. Teach your children to love and to serve their country. Teach them the value of education, good work ethics and taking nothing for granted, even freedom has its price. Inspire your children to aim high and dream big to become outstanding citizens of this country, then they can use their knowledge and influence to help building a FREE Vietnam.
Our children, Vietnam is the place of our birth, and we must come home to rest just like so many American soldiers who are still MIAs whose families will not rest until their loved ones are found and brought home.
Likewise for us - the former Republic of South Vietnam soldiers, we will wait for that day to come, a FREE Vietnam, so you can take us home even after when we are nothing but ashes.
a father,
Jim Huynh
Battleship New Jersey guns return after 60 years
In 1954, all of the Battleship New Jersey's massive 16 guns were replaced. The nine guns had been used during World War II and the Korean War. The guns were relined and test fired in 1969. Three of the barrels were in storage for decades at the St. Julien's Creek Annex U.S. Naval support facility in Portsmouth, Virginia. To save these historic barrels from being scrapped, the Battleship New Jersey and the Mahan Collection Foundation transported them for permanent display in Camden and Basking Ridge, New Jersey, and the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Each barrel is 68 feet long and weighs 120 tons. The barrels were transported north by Norfolk Southern. Delaware & New Jersey - Delaware Memorial Bridge (2019)
The Delaware Memorial Bridge is a twin suspension bridge crossing the Delaware River. The toll bridges carry Interstate 295 and U.S. Route 40 between Delaware and New Jersey. The bridge was designed by the firm known today as HNTB with consulting help from engineer Othmar Ammann, whose other designs include the Walt Whitman Bridge (which is similar in appearance, except for the fact that it is a single span) and Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. It is also one of only two crossings of the Delaware River with both U.S. Highway and Interstate Highway designations, the other being the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.
The bridges provide a regional connection for long-distance travelers. While not a part of Interstate 95, they connect two parts of the highway: the Delaware Turnpike (Interstate 95 in Delaware) on the south side with the New Jersey Turnpike (later Interstate 95 in New Jersey) on the north side. They also connect Interstate 495, U.S. Route 13, and Route 9 in New Castle, Delaware with U.S. Route 130 in Pennsville Township, New Jersey (at the settlement of Deepwater, New Jersey).
The bridges are dedicated to those from both New Jersey and Delaware who died in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War. On the Delaware side of the bridge is a War Memorial, visible from the northbound-side lanes. The toll facility is operated by the Delaware River and Bay Authority.
The Delaware Memorial Bridge is the southernmost fixed vehicular crossing of the Delaware River and the only fixed vehicular crossing between Delaware and New Jersey. However, at Fort Mott, N.J., there is a small amount of land on the New Jersey side of the river that is part of the State of Delaware, and thus there are pedestrian crossings in between those states, but not spanning the river. The Cape May–Lewes Ferry provides an alternate route between travelers from New Jersey and the Northeastern States to southern Delaware.
USS Becuna submarine - Philadelphia - 01 Nov 2010
Launched in 1944, the Becuna (SS-319) completed five wartime patrols in the Pacific Ocean. Becuna is similar to many submarines built in Philadelphia for the U.S. Navy.
Becuna is a BALAO-class submarine built in New London, CT. During World War II, Becky prowled the Pacific Ocean for Japanese ships, and is credited with sinking 3.5 Japanese merchant ships. Converted in 1951 to a Guppy 1A type with sophisticated radar and torpedo equipment including nuclear warheads, she is the only Guppy 1-A submarine on display.
Becuna's Cold War missions often found her in the Atlantic, trailing Soviet submarines with eavesdropping equipment aboard. She served in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic during the Korean and Vietnam Wars and ended her long and distinguished career as a training submarine in Connecticut.
Becuna was decommissioned in 1969 and has been part of the Philadelphia Independence Seaport Museum's Historic Ship Zone since 1996. Becuna is a National Historic Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Greatest American Battleship - USS New Jersey (BB-62)
USS New Jersey, a 45,000-ton Iowa class battleship, was built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Pennsylvania. Commissioned in May 1943, she spent the rest of that year in the western Atlantic and Caribbean area. New Jersey went to the Pacific in early 1944 and conducted her first combat operations in support of the Marshalls invasion. She was Fifth Fleet flagship during the mid-February raid on the Japanese base at Truk, where she used her guns to sink one enemy ship and join in sinking another. Through the rest of 1944, she took part in raids on Japanese-held islands, the Marianas invasion and Battle of Philippine Sea, the Battle of Leyte Gulf and operations against the Philippines. From August 1944, she was flagship of Admiral William F. Halsey's Third Fleet.
New Jersey continued her Pacific combat operations into 1945, supporting the invasions of Iwo Jima and the Ryukyus. Following overhaul, she again became Fifth Fleet flagship during the final days of World War II and remained in the Far East until early 1946. She went to the Atlantic in 1947 and made one midshipmen's training cruise to Europe before decommissioning in June 1948.
The Korean War brought New Jersey back into commission in November 1950. Two Korean combat tours in 1951 and 1953 were punctuated by a European cruise in the Summer of 1952. After returning home from the western Pacific in late 1953, New Jersey operated in the Atlantic. She deployed to Mediterranean and European waters twice in 1955-56 and was placed out of commission in August 1957.
USS New Jersey was the only battleship recalled to duty during the Vietnam War. She recommissioned in April 1968 and arrived off Southeast Asia in September. From then until April 1969, she conducted frequent bombardments along the South Vietnamese coast. While preparing for a second Vietnam tour, she was ordered inactivated and decommissioned in December 1969.
The early 1980s defense buildup produced a fourth active period for New Jersey, beginning with her recommissioning in December 1982. She again fired her big guns in combat during the Lebanon crisis of 1983-84 and deployed to the western Pacific in 1986 and 1989-90, with the latter cruise extending to the Persian Gulf area. Decommissioned again in February 1991, USS New Jersey was towed from the Pacific to the Atlantic in 1999. She is scheduled to become a museum at Camden, New Jersey.
