Places to see in ( Yeovil - UK )
Yeovil is a town and civil parish in south Somerset, England. The town of Yeovil lies within the local district of South Somerset and the Yeovil parliamentary constituency, situated at the southern boundary of Somerset, 130 miles (210 km) from London, 40 miles (64 km) south of Bristol and 30 miles (48 km) from Taunton.
In the 20th century it developed into a centre of the aircraft and defence industries, which made it a target for bombing in the Second World War, with one of the largest employers being Westland Aircraft. Additionally, the Fleet Air Arm has a station RNAS Yeovilton (HMS Heron), the primary base of the Royal Navy's Westland Wildcat and Westland EH101 helicopters, several miles north of the town and is a major local employer (Ministry of Defence). Several other manufacturing and retail companies also have bases in the town. Plans have been proposed for various regeneration projects in the town.
Yeovil Country Park, which includes Ninesprings, is one of several open spaces in the town. There are a range of educational, cultural and sporting facilities. Religious sites include the 14th-century Church of St John the Baptist. It is on the A30 and A37 roads and has two railway stations on two separate railway lines. Yeovil Pen Mill is on the Bristol to Weymouth line served by Great Western Railway services, whilst Yeovil Junction is on the London Waterloo to Exeter line served by South Western Railway. There is also a small railway museum.
Yeovil is situated at the southern boundary of Somerset, close to the border with Dorset, 130 miles (209 km) from London, 40 miles (64 km) south of Bristol and 30 miles (48 km) from Taunton. It lies in the centre of the Yeovil Scarplands, a major natural region of England. The suburbs include: Summerlands, Hollands, Houndstone, Preston Plucknett, Penn Mill, New Town, Hendford, Old Town, Forest Hill, Abbey Manor, Great Lyde. Outlying villages include East Coker, West Coker, Hardington, Evershot, Halstock, Stoford, Barwick, Sutton Bingham, Mudford and Yetminster. Other nearby villages include Bradford Abbas, Thornford Corscombe, Montacute (where one will find Montacute House), and Pendomer. The village of Brympton, now almost a suburb of Yeovil, contains the medieval manor of Brympton d'Evercy. Tintinhull is also a village close to Yeovil featuring the National Trust owned Tintinhull House and Gardens.
One of the symbols of Yeovil is Jack the Treacle Eater, a folly consisting of a small archway topped by a turret with a statue on top. This is actually located in the village of Barwick, just to the south of the town. The hamstone Abbey Farm House was built around 1420 by John Stourton II, known as Jenkyn, and the associated Abbey Barn dates from the same period.
Hendford Manor in the centre of the town was built around 1720 and has since been converted into offices. It is a Grade II* listed building. Newton Surmaville is a small park and house which is also known as Newton House. It was built between 1608 and 1612, for Robert Harbin, a Yeovil merchant. It has been designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building.
Yeovil has two theatres; The Octagon, and The Swan, a ten-screen cinema and 18-lane ten-pin bowling alley. Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides local health services. The Yeovil Railway Centre is a small railway museum at Yeovil Junction. It was created in 1993 in response to British Rail's decision to remove the turntable from Yeovil Junction. Approximately 0.25 miles (400 m) of track along the Clifton Maybank spur is used for demonstration trains.
The town has two railway stations on two separate railway lines. Yeovil Pen Mill is on the Bristol to Weymouth line served by Great Western Railway services, whilst Yeovil Junction is on the London Waterloo to Exeter line served by South Western Railway. Yeovil has bus services provided by First West of England, First Hampshire & Dorset, Nippy Bus, Nordcat , South West Coaches, Stagecoach South West and Damory Coaches along with coach services from National Express, Berry's Coaches and South West Tours.

Weymouth, Portland & Lulworth Cove (Dorset UK) 1963
Filmed using silent Kodachrome 8mm stock in the summer of 1963. Includes a trip along the sea front in Weymouth and a drive along the road to Portland via the causeway. The roads are full of classic cars although none are as old as the 1937 Morris Eight that I was driving at that time. The film was taken on a French clockwork Beaulieu MR8 camera with an Angineau zoom lens. It was expensive for the time at £150 but I bought it in a sale for half price. It took me two years to pay off the HP (hire purchase). No credit cards in those days! For comparison I was earning £12 a week as a skilled mechanic and petrol was 20p a gallon (4.5 litres).
Edited on my P4P800 Asus computer using Windows Movie Maker with a soundtrack generated by Magix music software (no copyright issues). Enjoy this flickery trip into the Dorset of yesteryear.

The village:
Sway is a village and civil parish in Hampshire in the New Forest national park in England. The civil parish was formed in 1879, when lands were taken from the extensive parish of Boldre. The village has shops and pubs, and a railway station on the main line from Weymouth and Bournemouth to Southampton and London Waterloo. Sway is on the southern edge of the woodland and heathland of the New Forest. Much of the children's novel The Children of the New Forest is set in the countryside surrounding Sway.
Overview:
Sway has shops, two pubs, and a number of restaurants and hotels. There is also a Church of England primary school. The village is home to football clubs, a tennis club, the mighty Sway Cricket Club, a fencing club, an archery club, and a gardening club. Sway railway station is on the main line from Weymouth and Bournemouth to Southampton and London Waterloo with train services operated by South Western Railway. From Brockenhurst, one can catch the Lymington Flyer services connect with the ferry to Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. Sway is twinned with the village of Bretteville, France.
The northern part of the parish contains areas of woodland, heathland, acid grassland, scrub and valley bog, supporting a richness and diversity of wildlife.
History:
Sway is a settlement of Anglo-Saxon origin, and its name, from the Old English name Svieia, means noisy stream which is a probable reference to the Avon Water. Stone Age implements have been found here and Bronze Age barrows containing funerary urns.
Sway is listed four times in the Domesday Book of 1086. Two hides were held from Roger de Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury by Fulcoin and Nigel respectively. A certain Edmund at the same date was holding one hide in Sway which Algar had held from King Edward. Romsey Abbey also held one hide in Sway.
Some time prior to 1150 Hugh de Witteville gave his whole land of Sway with its men and one mill to Quarr Abbey, and about the same date Ralph Fulcher donated land at Sway to the same abbey. In the 13th century Christchurch Priory also gained land in Sway, which increased in the 14th century by the grant of land in Sway from John, vicar of Christchurch. Free warren in Sway was granted to the priory in 1384. Romsey Abbey also held land in Sway, afterwards known as the manor of Sway Romsey or South Sway. The Abbess of Romsey was holding land in Sway together with the Abbot of Quarr and the Prior of Christchurch in 1316.
In 1543, at the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the lands possessed by Quarr and Christchurch were granted to Sir John Williams and others, by whom it was subsequently conveyed to John Mill, the purchaser and grantee of much monastic property in the neighbourhood. The combined lands became known as the manor of Sway Quarr. The manor of Sway Romsey (South Sway) remained separate but were also granted at the Dissolution to Sir John Williams and henceforth had the same owners as Sway Quarr. The estate then followed the descent of Battramsley manor until 1627, when it was sold by George Wroughton to John Button of Buckland Lymington, and in 1670 he or his son appeared before the justice seat held at Lyndhurst as the lord of the manor of Sway. Before the end of the 17th century, however, it had passed to Edmund Dummer of Swaythling. It then passed by inheritance into the Bond family who held the estate down to the 19th century.

A Walk Around London's Waterloo Railway Station
London Waterloo station is a central London railway terminus and London Underground station complex in the Waterloo area of the London Borough of Lambeth. It is one of 19 stations managed by Network Rail[8] and is located near the South Bank of the River Thames, in fare zone 1. A railway station on this site first came into being in July 1848; the present structure was inaugurated in 1922. Part of the station is a Grade II listed building.
With just under 100 million passenger entries and exits between April 2013 and March 2014, Waterloo is Britain's busiest railway station by passenger usage. The Waterloo complex is the 15th busiest passenger terminal in Europe, and the 91st busiest railway station in the world. It has more platforms and a greater floor area than any other station in the United Kingdom (though Clapham Junction, just under 4 miles (6 km) down the line, has the largest number of trains).
Waterloo is the Central London terminus for South West Trains providing the majority of commuter/regional services to South West London, Surrey, Hampshire, Dorset and parts of Berkshire. Major destinations served include Wimbledon, Epsom, Dorking, Guildford, Woking, Basingstoke, Winchester, Southampton, Salisbury, Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Weymouth and Exeter.
Much of Waterloo's traffic is local or suburban. All regular services are operated by South West Trains. Adjacent is London Waterloo East railway station, which is managed and branded separately.
The station was the London terminus for Eurostar international trains from 1994 until 2007, when they were transferred to St Pancras International.
