- See the Bay in a Day with an exclusive, private tour of The Bay of Islands.
See the best of The Bay of Islands with our Private Day Tours. A delightful ,scenic and peaceful area today, The Bay of Islands conceals a rich, historical backdrop of fierce tribal wars, bloody clashes between Maori and Pakeha, Missionary zeal and lawless Whaling times in the hellhole of the Pacific .
Our Day Tours in The Bay of Islands visit the towns of Paihia, Opua, Russell, Kerikeri and Kawakawa.
We soak up the local history along the route with visits to many places of historic note. A walk up a couple of ancient Pa Sites and a drive through a kauri forest, lunch at a Waterfront restaurant... See how the early settlers lived and where Captain Cook arrived.
Our private Bay of Islands tours also take in Art Galleries and studios, iconic New Zealand cafes, local chocolate and fudge factories, and the home of our special Vintage Steam Railway.

New Zealand Trip 2014
Our trip to New Zeland 2014
Bay of Islands, New Zealand (Version 1)
It's 2018, that means it's Summer anddddd sooo, time for a new video! It was a busy time for us at the end of last year so we didn't really get to prepare for this year's trip. It was a last minute planning but thank goodness we were able to go ahead with it after a number of hiccups.
The places we went to that were featured in this video were:
- Matauri Bay (Known for its blue ocean and white sand)
- Mangonui Fish Shop (The best fish and chips in NZ)
- Abbey Caves (Although we did not film inside as it was too dangerous to climb down and film at the same time; safety first! We're not ready to die just to film)
- Whangaroa (where we stayed)
If you're looking for a cheap place to stay around Bay of Islands area (or towns near it) I would suggest going to Sunseeker's lodge (via booking.com). It is a budget motel but its got great views, free spa and really cheap accommodation cost! The host is very accommodating and friendly too so that's a plus! Total cost per night, per person was $44.50 NZD.
Music used:
All activities were free. Of course you can go to Paihia to do some paid activities but since we were on a tight budget, we had to make do with the free stuff!
Other things to note:
Go buy ice cream from Cellini's Ice cream. It is the best ice cream in town! (or maybe New Zealand? Who knows but just buy some to try it!)
Thinking which one to choose between Abbey Caves and Waitomo? Here's something to think about:
Waitomo has guided tours and are probably the number one place for tourists but of course, they're not free. Abbey Caves on the other hand are free and just as spectacular. HOWEVER, no safety checks were done in the place and you enter at your own risk. That being said, it can get quite scary and wouldn't recommend it if you're travelling alone. There are big, slippery climbs you need to climb up and down on PLUS getting wet. So there's really so many things you need to consider. Is it worth going there because it's free?
However. an alternative cave I can suggest is Waipu caves. It is a short walk to the cave and probably would be more accessible.
That's about it. If you have any more questions, feel free to send me an email or pop it in the comment down below!

New Zealand - Engagement, Hobbiton, Bay of Islands, Wai-o-Tapu, Glow worm caves, Cathedral Cove
WE'RE ENGAGED!!!!!! After dating for a total of 9 years it was finally time to pop the question in a very memorable place.
With 9 days in Australia under our belt we were off to New Zealand which is honestly the one of the most beautiful countries we have ever seen. Every day was jam packed and we did so many things we couldn't even fit it all in the description.
While in New Zealand we went to Auckland, The Hobbiton movie set, Wai-o-Tapu geothermal park, Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, Coromandel Peninsula, Cathedral Cove, Bay of Islands, Hole in the rock, Glow worm caves and Waiheke Island (where we got engaged)
Rather than try and explain everything we did, just watch the video and take a look for yourselves!
Enjoy!
Container House in Banks Peninsula, Canterbury, New Zealand
Shipping Container House in Banks Peninsula, Canterbury, New Zealand. In this video, we bring you an amazing shipping container house built with 16 shipping containers in Banks Peninsula, Canterbury, New Zealand. Overlooking French Farm Bay where peace and birdsong abound, this stunning and innovative container home exploits its superb location nestled amongst 5.75ha of bush with an abundance of native birdlife, to celebrate this amazing architecture. This 3 year old contemporary container house has been thoughtfully designed by the architect and owners, finished to a high quality with loads of natural light and low maintenance features. New Zealand- The Hole in the rock
New Zealand
1. Highlights of the attraction (introduce the attraction and what is the attraction best known is for?)
One of New Zealand’s most recognized attraction is the Hole in the Rock. This attraction is known for being the birthplace of a nation between the New Zealand’s Indigenous peoples, and the European Missionaries.
2. A brief overview of the importance of this attraction (age? Historical/environment/cultural significance etc.?)
On the Bay of Islands in 1840 the Indigenous peoples of New Zealand, also know as the Maori, signed the Treaty of Waitangi with the European Missionaries. This location is classified as the Maori meetinghouse, which symbolizes the agreement between both the indigenous peoples, and the missionaries. The signing of the treaty represents New Zealand becoming part of the New British Colony.
3. Why is this attraction selected as a case study of sustainability?
The preservation of this site is relevant because New Zealand is now attempting to sustain the Maori population and culture. There are various tours which one can go on while visiting New Zealand, such as a boat cruise which educates the tourist of Cape Brett and the famous Hole in the Rock. This allows tourist to get insight on the Maori culture and how it all began when becoming an established country.
4. What is this attraction’s single most prevalent sustainability issue?
(Political, Social, Cultural, Economic or Environmental)
Provide details on how you arrived at this issue.
In 1840 the two cultures came together therefore New Zealand became part of the British Colony. However tensions rose over disputes in regards to land sales. As a result of this there were decades of conflicts and various diseases brought by the European missionaries, which impacted the Maori population in a negative manner.
In the late 1830’s when the Europeans first came into contact with Maori people there were estimated to be nearly 200,000 Indigenous peoples. When the famous European explorer, James Cook arrived the population had plummeted to nearly 56,000 people in 1858. As time has progressed in the 20th century the Maori population began to recover, and efforts have been made to bring the culture back to the New Zealand society. In 2010 there was an estimated 660, 000 Maori indigenous people in New Zealand, being roughly 15% of the total population. The issues arose as the result of the signing of the treaty, which is represented by the site we have chosen known as The Hole in Rock.
