WHY? The U.S Navy’s Newest Ship Is Trapped in Canada
The U.S. Navy’s latest ship, the USS Little Rock, is trapped in Montreal. Thanks to fast-moving ice, a short stay in Canada could last as long as four months until the ice melts and allows the Little Rock to join the rest of the Navy at sea.
The USS Little Rock is a Freedom-class littoral combat ship built by Marinette Marine on the shores of the Menominee River in Marinette, Wisconsin. Designed to operate off coastlines and in shallow water, littoral combat ships can carry out anti-submarine, anti-mine, anti-surface, and amphibious warfare missions. Little Rock and her sister ships are small, fast, and agile.

9/11 refuge revisited: Gander Airport
As terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001 closed American air space, 38 passenger planes heading west over the Atlantic with more than 6,500 passengers and crew were diverted to Gander Airport in Newfoundland. Those passengers soon found out that instead of being trapped, they were embraced. CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg revisits the airport ten years later.
Nova Scotia community remembers 7 children killed in Halifax house fire
We're now learning more about the tragic death of seven Syrian refugee children in a Halifax house fire. Their loss is perhaps most acutely being felt in Elmsdale, the small community near Halifax that the Barho family called home until a few months ago.

Canada’s Lead Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship Builder’s Sea Trials Underway
Halifax Shipyard has commenced initial builder’s sea trials for Canada’s lead Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS), the future HMCS Harry DeWolf.
The lead AOPS departed Halifax Shipyard at 0945 and, using its diesel-electric engines, moved to the Bedford Basin to start initial builder’s sea trails associated with anchor handling, the integrated bridge and navigation system (IBNS), fin stabilizers, Multi-Role Rescue Boat (MRRB) launch and recovery, and communication systems.
Initial builder’s sea trials will continue over the next few weeks and will be followed by formal sea trials and acceptance by the Royal Canadian Navy. This will span into the first quarter of 2020.
At 103 metres and 6,615 tonnes, the future HMCS Harry DeWolf is the largest Royal Canadian Navy ship built in Canada in 50 years.
There are currently four AOPS under construction at Halifax Shipyard, including the future HMCS Harry DeWolf. The future HMCS Margaret Brooke was launched on November 10, 2019 and is currently pier side where work continues to prepare the ship for sea trials and handover to the Royal Canadian Navy late next year.
Inside Halifax Shipyard’s facilities, the Royal Canadian Navy’s third and fourth AOPS, the future HMCS Max Bernays and the future HMCS William Hall, are under construction. The first two major sections of the future HMCS Max Bernays are scheduled to be moved outside in spring 2020.
Over the next few decades, Halifax Shipyard will build six AOPS for the Royal Canadian Navy, two AOPS for the Canadian Coast Guard, and 15 Canadian Surface Combatants for the Royal Canadian Navy, as part of Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS).
As a result of the NSS, Irving Shipbuilding has become one of Atlantic Canada’s largest regional employers, with thousands of Canadians now working in skilled, well-paying jobs. Halifax Shipyard, long at the centre of Canadian shipbuilding, is now home to the most modern, innovative shipbuilding facilities, equipment, and processes in North America.
Halifax Shipyard is also continuing its legacy as the Halifax-class In-Service Support Centre of Excellence, with HMCS Charlottetown currently in the graving dock for an extensive docking work period.
Men trapped in flooded elevator recount dramatic rescue
Two men who were trapped in a flooded Toronto elevator lived to tell their tale and are recounting their dramatic rescue. The water inside was nearly two metres high and the pair only had about 30 centimetres of air space. Police officers had to swim through the basement and pry the elevator doors open with a crowbar to get them out.

Canadian Navy’s support ship Asterix to join fleet in Halifax
The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) has completed the development, commissioning and sea-trials of its first Resolve-class naval support ship, Asterix.
The vessel was constructed by Canada-based Davie Shipbuilding and delivered to the navy on time, within budget and at an internationally competitive cost, the company said.
Asterix sailed from Québec City to travel to the Canadian Forces Base in Halifax on 23 December, where the ship is slated to enter into service with the RCN.

Hi, Hiram Here - 10 Day Cruise to Canada
Hi, Hiram here,
I've been away for the last two weeks doing a ten day cruise to Canada on the Norwegian Cruise Line's ship Gem. The Ports of Call for this cruise were:
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Quebec City, Quebec
Cornerbrook, Newfoundland
Sydney, Nova Scotia
This video covers some of a tour that I took in Halifax, Nova Scotia, starting at Peggy's Cove and it's lighthouse. At the time I didn't know that this tour would be the sightseeing highlight of the cruise.
Upfront I have to say that other than in the service I've never been on a cruise and even if this cruise hadn't had problems I also have to say that I've found out that cruises like this aren't my cup of tea. And believe me this cruise had problems.
This was the last cruise to Canada for the season. The Gem's next cruise was down to the Caribbean. I think the previous cruise should have been the last cruise to Canada.
The weather was really bad. It rained and got so cold the weather decks were off limits so everyone was kinda trapped indoors. When the rain stopped the sea was so rough the pools were closed. I show a bit of video showing the pool splashing up onto the deck.
Anyway this is the first and last cruise I'll be doing. Give me the open road any day.
So I'm back and I'll be doing more videos. While I was gone I got lots of requests so I should be busy for awhile.
Thanks for watching my videos,
Hiram
