Are you planning a romantic getaway or a family trip to the famous Amalfi Coast of Italy and wondering what can you visit in just one day? Look no further. Here is the travel itinerary for a day trip to visit the charming towns of Sorrento and the picturesque Positano on the Amalfi coast.
This travel video shares the tips which can help you to plan a visit to this gorgeous part of Italy.
Sorrento is one of the most favourite resort towns in Italy. Also known as the gateway to the Amalfi coast. Within a striking distance of Naples and Pompeii, this city looks like a balcony over the sea with breathtaking views and numerous walking trails. And Positano is Amalfi’s most photo-worthy location full of narrow streets, clothing boutiques, trendy restaurants and wisteria-draped hotels. The dramatic cliffs of Positano and the small village on the coastline are a treat to watch.

Living My Guidebook, High Above the Amalfi Coast
Sitting down to lunch in Ravello — high above the treacherously beautiful Amalfi Coast — and enjoying the pasta that’s the specialty of this town, it occurs to me that experiences like these are made possible by good information...and that’s what the Rick Steves Italy guidebook is packed with: As I spend about 80 days a year personally in the field, “living my guidebook,” I often wonder how many people are actually still doing this work. It’s clear to me: The only way to research and write a good guidebook is to live it. And it’s tasty work.
(This is Day 27 of my 100 Days in Europe series. As I travel with Rick Steves’ Europe Tours, research my guidebooks, and make new TV shows, I’m reporting on my experiences in Italy, Portugal, France, Ireland, England, Scotland, Germany, Switzerland, and more. Follow along at
ITALY 2011 Ostuni Alberobello Matera
We are in the South of Italy, in the heel of the boot, in Apulia. Ostuni is known as the white city, built on a hill of white limestone. This is our first destination. Next, we travel to Alberobello where the trulli architecture is truly unique! Dry set stones are arranged in thin layers on the conical shaped roof tops (shielding residents from the hot sun in the summertime). From there we travel to Matera, a lesser known destination for travel in Southern Italy, in the Basilicata Region. Matera was a city built of caves on a deep ravine in Southern Italy, almost unknown to folks in other parts of Italy. People, like Dr. Carlo Levi (who wrote Christ Stopped at Eboli, pub. 1945) was banished to Matera because of his opposition to Fascism (1935). The Sassi remained remote and obscured from most until the 1950's when the Italian government realized the squalor and medieval lifestyle of the residents. Finally in the l960's the last residents of this cave ravine were moved to other housing. Nowadays, the Sassi at Matera has become a trendy place to live; hotels have renovated spaces and you can book a room at a spa hotel. Driving into the modern Matera, it would be difficult to know that this deep ravine exists and much is unknown about its past residents.

Michelangelo's Italy
Rick Steves European Travel Talk | Join Gene Openshaw, co-author of Rick Steves' Europe 101: History & Art, as he shares the work and travels of Michelangelo. Michelangelo Buonarroti — sculptor, painter, architect, and poet — was both prolific and well-traveled. We'll trace the life, work and travels of Earth's Greatest Artist, visiting the Italian cities where he created his masterpieces. You may be surprised to find that the Italy of today is just as culturally rich as it was in the days of Michelangelo. (Please note this presentation was filmed April 14, 2012 and any special promotions or discounts mentioned are no longer valid.) Gene's Europe 101: History & Art for the Traveler book is available at

Get Out of Your Hotel Room...and Walk Around
Here’s a travel tip: Revisit Europe's great markets after dark. I love the markets of Palermo, where merchants sing their sales pitches and the octopus are squirting-fresh. But at night, it’s an entirely different scene. Join Alfio and me on a walk through the Vucciria Market after hours — a kaleidoscope of edgy graffiti, kids with big eyes and gelato, cheap plastic chairs, soccer on the big screen, and people embracing life with Sicilian gusto.
