To have seen Italy without having seen Sicily is not to have seen Italy at all, fo Siciliy is the clue to everything Johann Woflgang von Goethe
Messina is Sicily's panoramic gateway — located on the northeastern corner of the island, the city just kisses the boot of mainland Italy's southern tip. Get lost among the patchwork of churches and antique palaces. The Messina Cathedral is in the heart of the city, and its famous bell tower houses the largest mechanical clock in the world — every day at noon, the statues move to Schubert's Ave Maria. In front of this church, you'll find the Fontana di Orione, a 16th-century fountain that's a work of art in itself, with sculptures of figures from ancient mythology. Cruise to Sicily and take a leisurely walk to the Sacrario di Cristo Re, a hilltop church with panoramic views of the town and the surrounding mountains.
MESSINA is the capital of the Italian Metropolitan City of Messina. It is the third largest city on the island of Sicily, and the 13th largest city in Italy, with a population of more than 238,000[7] inhabitants in the city proper and about 650,000 in the Metropolitan City. It is located near the northeast corner of Sicily, at the Strait of Messina, opposite Villa San Giovanni on the mainland, and has close ties with Reggio Calabria.
Flavours of Messina, Sicily (S2-Ep12)
Messina, Sicily is a beautiful city once a powerhouse in the ancient world. The Polo sisters take a horse carriage tour, watch the world's largest astronomical clock come alive, and stumble upon a gourmet delight, Messina Street Food Festival. The sisters also share how they traveled to Messina from Salerno Italy on a transport ferry, not the way most tourists travel!

Messina - The Ancient Gateway to Sicily
As in the past when merciless warriors used this city to invade the island, Messina is still today the main gateway to Sicily- minus all the blood! With its distinctive curved harbour on the northern most point of Sicily, the narrow stretch of water of the Strait of Messina is the only thing that divides this island from mainland Italy.

Ferry Boat Trip Messina Strait - Sicily to Italy - Offshore Time Lapse GoPro HD
If you ever travel in the very south of italy you will certainly experience to cross the Messina strait. The 3.1 km wide water corridor separates Sicily from the Italian peninsula. It is a must do experience even only for a one day trip.
This path once crossed by ancient Phoenician and Greek ships, in the aim to spread their power and grow their wealth has seen myriads of sicilians going to find better luck in the North carrying their heavy luggages on board of packed trains, looking with huge melancholy at their island slowly disappearing at their backs. Of course many of them returned several times back to their home towns, but the feeling of leaving their island will pervade their souls even if they are going away for holiday. Such a strong relationship have Sicilians with their roots, and maybe only them can understand it well.
If you have time and a strong stomach you should take the chance to enjoy the cue at the small bars on the deck and taste the famous arancini (or arancine): deep fried rice balls coated in breadcrumbs and filled wit ragù and cheese. The legend tells the ones you get on the ferry be the best in all Sicily. Even if we can't assure it why don't you put it in your to do list in Sicily.
