Tromsø city northern Norway
The history of Tromsø
Archaeological finds show settlement in Tromsø dating back 9000 years.
In 1252, Håkon Håkonsson built the first church in Tromsø, which was on the island of Tromsøya and at the time was the world's northernmost church.
In 1789, the Bergen trade monopoly was abolished and the people of Northern Norway could trade with whomever they wished. In 1794, despite having a permanent population of just 80, Tromsø was issued its city charter, signed by Christian VII. Traders then moved here from near and far.
The locals of Tromsø have always been quick to follow international fashion and trends, such that a German traveller who visited the city at the turn of the century was clearly impressed over the town and its trendy women. This must be the Paris of the North! he said, adding another nickname to Tromsø's list. The first boat left here for the Arctic in 1820, and from 1850 Tromsø was Norway's leading Arctic city. The Arctic hunting became an important industry for Tromsø. Visitors to Tromsø in the 19th century were often extremely surprised with the city's growth, language skills and culture. In addition to Tromsø being called the Paris of the North, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson reported to his Karoline that here it's just champagne and spectacle. Several Arctic expeditions have departed from Tromsø. Roald Amundsen, Umberto Nobile and Fridtjof Nansen often visited Tromsø in connection with their expeditions. The city was also referred to as the Gateway to the Arctic, a name which is well known and often used to describe Tromsø given that the majority of polar expeditions started in Tromsø and Arctic hunting is part of the city's history.
Facts about Tromsø today
Tromsø is a popular meeting place and has developed into a modern city municipality with a colourful and energetic population from all over the country, as well as from more than 100 countries around the globe.
Tromsø is accessible by air, car, bus and boat and is situated at nearly 70 °N.
Tromsø is Norway's third largest city municipality by land area. The Municipality of Tromsø covers 2558 km², of which 1434 km² is on the mainland and 1124 km² on islands. The municipality's total coastline measures 1275 km. The municipality has a population of approx. 65,000 (2008).
The island of Tromsøya is connected with the mainland by the 1016 m long Tromsø Bridge and the approximately 3.5 km long tunnel under the Tromsøsundet, while it is connected to the island of Kvaløya by the 1220 m long Sandnessund Bridge, near the city's airport.
Tromsø is home to the world's northernmost university (the University of Tromsø) and brewery (Mack). Activities and adventures in Tromsø cover a wide spectrum -- from mountain climbing in the Midnight Sun, fishing trips to the fjord or lakes, downhill skiing beneath the spectacular Northern Lights and dog sledding trips to several world's northernmost activities such as visiting the brewery's pub or an outdoors restaurant!
We wish you a pleasant and memorable stay in Tromsø!

Tromsø
Tromsø (Norwegian pronunciation: [ˈtrʊmsø] ( listen); Northern Sami: Romsa; Kven: Tromssa) is a city and municipality in Troms county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the city of Tromsø.
Tromsø is the largest urban area in Northern Norway, and the second largest north of the Arctic Circle in Sápmi (following Murmansk). Most of Tromsø, including the city centre, is located on the island of Tromsøya in the county of Troms, 350 kilometres (217 mi) north of the Arctic Circle. Substantial parts of the urban area are also situated on the mainland to the east, and on parts of Kvaløya—a large island to the west. Tromsøya is connected to the mainland by the Tromsø Bridge and the Tromsøysund Tunnel, and to the island of Kvaløya by the Sandnessund Bridge. The city is warmer than most other places located on the same latitude, due to the warming effect of the Gulf Stream.

Sun on HURTIGRUTEN
Traveling SUN is a road trip and a site-spesific art project by IstadPacini ArtLab, 2012-2016
We want to bring light to the dark winter months in the north, meet people and share with the rest of the world the beauty of the unspoiled nature that is to be found in all of the Nordic countries
Distance: Oslo-Tromsø-Kirkenes-Bergen-London-Rjukan-Oslo-Reykjavik-Mi i Rana Norway = 12.755 km (7926 miles)
artubeart.blogspot.no
For those of us living in the north the sun or lack of it has an immense impact on our lives. The artists Christine Istad and Lisa Pacini started the project by bringing the SUN from Oslo to Tromsø as a gesture. To take the SUN on the road trip was an essential part of the work. By documenting the trip on our blog, we allow viewers to share the trip with us. Our aim with our art project is to bring light to the dark winter months in the north, meet people and share with the rest of the world the beauty of the unspoiled nature that is to be found in all of the Nordic countries.
The SUN is a circular light sculpture, 3 m in diameter, that shifts between a wide range of warm colors. To make the road trip, it was suspended above a flatbed trailer that was pulled by a flat bed truck. The generator that powers the SUN is in the back of the truck, allowing us to drive with the light on all the time. The SUN was mounted on the second floor façade of Tromsø Kunstforening on arrival the, where it was installed from November 2012 until the sun officially returns from the long winter on the 19th of January 2013. The SUN then travelled all along the Norwegian west coast with Hurtigruten, M/S Nordkapp, mounted on the top deck, on a eight-day voyage from Tromsø to Kirkenes and finally to Bergen, then to Rjukan the winter 2013-2014, Henie Onstad Art Center in Oslo winter 2014-2015 and The Nordic House Reykjavik, Iceland winter 2015-2016. The whole journey is documented and added to our blog and road movies. The Traveling SUN i s sold to the National Library in Mo i Ranat Nort of Norway through KORO.

Text description provided by the architects. The holiday home is located near the village Geilo, a popular skiing destination in the valley Hallingdal. Ski resorts are abundant around the lodge, with a freestyle terrain park right next to the site. Out of winter season, the mountains provide excellent hiking opportunities as well as other sporting activities.
The family of four with anticipation of a fifth addition provided a straight-forward program for their mountain lodge: four bedrooms, separate living and dining areas, a youth lounge and a mezzanine for the younger children. In addition a small annex would accommodate guests and visiting grandparents.

Romsdal Folk Museum by Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter
The Romsdal Folk Museum is an architectonic attraction and a treasured landmark that embodies the history and identity of the entire region. Our intention in this project was to let the structure signal its meaning and function through an architectural expression and the use of local materials. The scale of the building refers to the urbanity and morphology of the town.
The plan geometry is deceptively simple, the characteristic angled shapes are limited to the roof and the external wall, making the circulation and internal organisation clear and flexible. Pine is the primary building material of the museum. Exterior walls and roof are made of solid timber in combination of steel beam when required. Exterior walls and ceilings covered with maintenance-pine relief tempered with bio-based oil.
The Romsdal Folk Museum is a great example of strategic use of low-tech building solutions. It embodies the national policy in Norway to aim for a more sustainable future. The museum is built using Norwegian timber technology and acts as a hub for cultural development. In this building, the people of Molde as well as visitors and tourists are given the opportunity to connect and to build a wider community. Source by Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter. Info project
