A Shot that Changed the World - The Assassination of Franz Ferdinand I PRELUDE TO WW1 - Part 3/3
On June 28th, 1914, Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, a nationalist working for the Serbian underground organisation Black Hand (officially known as Unification or Death). From today's perspective, the assassination is seen as the event that triggered the chain reaction leading to the outbreak of the Great War. These events are known today as the July Crisis. Only one month after the shot, on July 28th, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia.

The French Revolution: Crash Course World History #29
In which John Green examines the French Revolution, and gets into how and why it differed from the American Revolution. Was it the serial authoritarian regimes? The guillotine? The Reign of Terror? All of this and more contributed to the French Revolution not being quite as revolutionary as it could have been. France endured multiple constitutions, the heads of heads of state literally rolled, and then they ended up with a megalomaniacal little emperor by the name of Napoleon. But how did all of this change the world, and how did it lead to other, more successful revolutions around the world? Watch this video and find out. Spoiler alert: Marie Antoinette never said, Let them eat cake. Sorry.

Bernhard Gander : Take Death (Matthias Pintscher / Ensemble intercontemporain)
...the virgin who was sacrificed in Stravinsky's Le Sacre,
comes back to Earth and takes revenge...

1815. The War of the Sixth Coalition. StarMedia. Babich-Design
All episodes:
Star Media and Babich Design continue the account of the Napoleonic Wars with the Russian army’s long journey from the burning down of Moscow to their victory in Paris including the Battle of Dresden and the Battle of Kulm; the French defeat near Leipzig; the Russian army’s military operations in France and the assault on the French capital by the Russian bayonets which finally liberated Europe from Napoleon’s dictatorship.
Theatrical feature film-style cinematography was used in the reconstruction of this epic military campaign from the battle episodes, the dialogue between characters and battle plans to the biographies of the military leaders. Battle sites, fortresses, cities and the everyday life of the soldiers during the campaign were created in stunning CGI animation. Military uniforms from all the fighting nations, the cold steel and firearms of the infantry and cavalry, artillery and other military equipment of the time have been specially recreated for the production of this magnificent and epic series.

Is Bratislava, Slovakia Worth Visiting?
Is Bratislava, Slovakia worth visiting? I had no idea what to expect but within five minutes of arriving I knew this was going to be good. This European capital city really charmed me and it's well worth visiting. It’s a one hour drive from Vienna, Austria, which makes a perfect day trip. If you can spend a bit more time, even better.
How much is it to stay in Bratislava? Tour my Airbnb:
Visit the Bratislava Christmas Market with me:
The first thing I saw was the SNP Bridge or, as locals call it, the UFO Bridge which crosses the Danube River. SNP stands for Slovak National Uprising but the nickname comes from the flying saucer shaped restaurant that sits at the top of the bridge pylon. Unfortunately, the construction of the bridge meant that a large portion of the beautiful Old Town was destroyed, including almost the entire Jewish quarter.
St. Martin’s Cathedral, one of the city’s most historically important buildings, narrowly missed the bridge construction. The access ramp for the bridge is extremely close to it and the church is actually sustaining damage due to all the vibrations from the busy traffic. The cathedral was where Hungarian kings (and one queen!) were crowned for hundreds of years. Leaders of the Habsburg Empire, including the one and only Maria Theresa, had their coronations there between 1563 and 1830. There’s a crown at the top of the steeple sitting on a golden pillow which gives a hint of how significant this place is. On the sidewalk below there are little crown symbols that show the coronation procession route taken by royals on their way to St. Martin’s. You can follow them through the town, if you’d like to walk in their footsteps.
The best view of the cathedral is from Bratislava Castle which sits above the city. The hill has been populated since the Stone Age and the first known inhabitants were the Celts. There are a bunch of stairs to reach the castle but it’s well worth it. I love the crisp white colour of the castle with its four towers. I think it’s the best spot to see the sunset because the warm light at dusk is beautiful.
Michael’s Gate is the only surviving gate to the old city. There used to be four city gates and they were the only way in and out during medieval times. Michael’s Gate was built in the 13th century and in the 17th century a moat was added complete with a draw bridge that went up and down.
Nearby Michael’s Gate is Executioner Alley. It’s where the town executioner used to live and, because the city only had one, his house had to be clearly marked for anyone, um, needing him. The residence is now a massage centre which I found pretty funny.
If you’re in need of good luck there are some statues in Bratislava you can touch. One is of a man standing in a gutter at an intersection called ‘The Watcher.’ It’s considered good luck to touch his head. If you still need more luck, head over to the statue of Hans Christian Andersen and rub his finger. He visited Bratislava and it even inspired some of his writing.
One of my favourite spots in Bratislava is the Church of St. Elizabeth of Hungary or, as it’s better known, the Blue Church. Everything from the façade to the mosaic tiles to the roof is blue. Inside the art nouveau building even the pews are blue. This church is a really popular spot to get married and it takes years to get a booking.
A building that has been given the honour of being one of the ugliest in the world is also found in Bratislava: the Slovak Radio Building. This inverted pyramid is an excellent example of Brutalist architecture from the Communist era in Slovakia. Whether you love it or hate it, I doubt you’ll forget it.
We did a great free walking tour which I can highly recommend. If you’re interested, this is the company:

Moroccan Food Review in Granada, Spain Travel Food Video Transcript:
It is day 3 in Granada so we have basically covered most of the main attractions. Yeah. But we have another beautiful sunny day. We do. Even if it is cold so we're going for a walk along the Darro river before we have lunch. Then we're going to do Moroccan food but most of the restaurants don't even open until 1 pm.
For today's meal here in Granada we are at a Moroccan restaurant. This place is called Al-Faguara and we were here yesterday and it was so good that we immediately planned to come back for lunch the following day. Why are we having Moroccan food?
Because we are like a ferry ride away from Morocco.
This is a big part of the cuisine culture here in Granada. If you come here there is just restaurants galore yeah in terms of what you can try from Morocco basically. We've been doing a lot of shopping on what is known as Moroccan street and they have a lot of tea shops and restaurants. So yeah we figured let's make a dedicated Moroccan food video and introduce you guys to some tasty dishes.
we should mention we are doing a three course meal. Yes, we are. So appetizers first. Yeah and before I even begin I want to make a point that we all carefully selected different food items yes so we can show you something different.
So Sam I've got pita bread here. And I have delicious looking hummus that has it looks like it is very spicy. It looks like it has some paprika maybe.
ow we are moving on to George. Who got the falafel. Three falafels.
So let us see how we do with that. Okay. Isn't this the same thing you had yesterday as well?
It was. it was the same thing.
For my starter I got the harira which is a Moroccan soup. And it is steaming so careful how close you get the lens.
So as you can see it has got some chickpeas, noodles. It has a little bit of beef. Some vegetables. And yeah it is just really nice on a cold day. It is really hearty.
Moving on to the mains. I ordered the Chicken Tagine which is cooked in a claypot.
Clear or ceramic.
If you take a closer look we have two pieces of chicken, a bed of green peas. We've got carrots. Zucchini. So lots of veggies in here.
It was still bubbling when they brought it to the table. So this is probably going to be hot.
This is chicken with couscous on the bottom. It has got raisins, caramelized onions and it is sweet.
Now moving on to George.
We have a spinach roll. Yes. And a little mountain of rice. Mountain of I'm not sure what it is. It looks like rice and veggies.
Now moving on to dessert. They have 3 options. You can get tea, coffee or ice cream. Today we've gotten teas and coffees.
Got myself a little cup of tea. It comes in this beautiful teapot.
What we ended up doing is supplementing our dessert which is our tea and our coffees with baklava.
We're going to enjoy our dessert and then we'll be back for price point.
That was a fantastic meal. In terms of the price point it came to 48 Euros total for the 4 of us. 12 per person
This is part of our Travel in Spain video series showcasing Spanish food, Spanish culture and Spanish cuisine.
