Northwest Reno is on the southern side of the foothills separating Reno from the North Valleys and consists of diverse housing neighborhoods like West University, Kings Row, and West 4th Street. The northwest Reno community is 10 minutes from downtown Reno and the University of Nevada, Reno. When you’re near the university, stop by Archie’s, a treasured bar and restaurant. South of that 24-hour pub is Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers and Ike’s Sandwiches.
Rancho San Rafael Regional Park is east of the restaurants and is one of the largest recreational areas in Reno. The park provides a dog park, hiking trails, a playground, volleyball court, and the William D May Museum and Arboretum. The Great Reno Balloon Race calls Rancho San Rafael home, taking over the northern fields every fall and drawing nearly 150,000 visitors for the event. Whitaker Park is a neighborhood park north of downtown with a playground and tennis courts. Idlewild Park is another fantastic recreational area south of the community. The park is home to baseball and softball fields, a basketball court, tennis court, volleyball court, playground, and the Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway. The park is complete with rose gardens and a community pool alongside the magnificent Truckee River. Plus, Idlewild Park hosts Food Truck Friday every summer.
North McCarran Boulevard has numerous shopping centers available to residents near May Anne Avenue. Save Mart, Flowing Tide, Ijji 4 Korean Bar-B-Que, and Chase Bank are inside the Canyon Center, with a Planet Fitness on its way. Across the street is a Walmart Supercenter and Doughboy’s Donuts. Ridgeview Plaza is south of Walmart, providing a Safeway, L & L Hawaiian Barbecue, Kohl’s, Ross, Wingstop, and Chipotle. McQueen Crossing Shopping Center is further west on Robb Drive with Raley’s, Umpqua Bank, Bully’s Sports Bar & Grill, and Sakana Express.
The Washoe County School District serves northwest Reno through Grace Warner Elementary School. This school is near West 7th Street within a residential neighborhood. Clayton Middle School is a mile from Grace Warner on Kings Row. The school backs up to Northwest Park and Pool providing large fields and amenities accessible to students. McQueen High School opened in 1982 to serve the students of Northwest Reno south of the Northwest Reno Library. The school earned its name from Dr. Robert McQueen, a former professor of psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno. The university is east of the neighborhood with university housing spread throughout the community.

University of Nevada Reno in 2001
The University of Nevada, Reno campus in 2001. I shot this footage at the beginning of my first semester, to show family back home what the campus looked like. This was taken only a few weeks after Sept. 11. Cut the audio, because my camera had a really annoying motor noise.

CLIP OF THE WEEK #147 - University of Nevada Reno
Travis Prange takes a moment to explain his goals and motivations while attending U.N.R. He is one of a few skateboarders who has a college degree, and continues to push his skate game every day.
The message he embodies is one of positive reaction and persistence to perfection. Travis' continued push to be one of the best skateboarders in Nevada has made him a state-wide skateboard legend. There are no professional companies on the band-wagon yet, no major magazine ads here, nothing but a man with a degree and a skateboard. This is RENO SKATEBOARDING at its best, this truly is the who we are and what we do.
We are making a name for ourselves in so many other areas of business, that time will only tell when we begin to run our own ads in big magazines, and produce our own skateboards for other kids we eventually sponsor
