Azerbaijan Street Organ
The first street organ “Old Baku”, inspired by the well known musical works of the prominent Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyov, was created on the eve of the Novruz Bayram, March 12, 2014 at the direction of the First Secretary of the Azerbaijani Embassy in The Netherlands, PhD Elkhan Alasgarov.
Azerbaijani melodies are sounded in the instrument by a mechanical manual method with music books, which consist of buttons. In total some 17 books have been prepared.
The uniqueness of the organ is in its design- the background of the Baku fortress, a drawing of the Maiden Tower, and rotating shapes of the characters of Hajibeyov`s operas: Meshadi Ibad, Gochi Askar, Sarvar and Gulchohra. The design was prepared by Alasgarov but created by Dutch experts and artists who have made organ and music books. The lead masters were Tonn and his wife, who are followers of the Flemish school of street organs.
2014-cü il martın 12-də Novruz bayramı ərəfəsində Azərbaycanın Niderlanddakı səfirinin birinci katibi, fəlsəfə doktoru Elxan Ələsgərovun layihəsi üzrə Azərbaycanın görkəmli bəstəkarı Üzeyir Hacıbəyovun məşhur musiqi əsərlərinin motivləri əsasında ilk Old Baku küçə orqanı yaradılıb.
Bu alətdə Azərbaycan melodiyaları fasilə və dəliklərdən ibarət musiqi kitablarından mexaniki əl yolu ilə səslənir. Ümumilikdə 17 kitab hazırlanıb. Orqanın unikallığı onun Bakı qalası, Qız Qalasının təsviri, Ü.Hacıbəyovun operasının personajları olan Məşədi İbad, Qoçu Əsgər, Sərvər və Gülçöhrənin fırlanan fiqurları fonunda dizaynınadır. Dizayn Elxan Ələsgərov tərəfindən hazırlanıb, orqanı yaradan sənətkarlar, rəssamlar və musiqili kitabları hazırlayan mütəxəssislər hollandlardır. Orqanın baş sənətkarı Tonn və onun həyat yoldaşı olub. Onların hər ikisi fələməng küçə orqanı sənətkarları məktəbinin davamçılarıdır.

Nagorno Karabakh. Film SHUSHA 1973 (Еng. Subtitles). Location: Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh, Shusha. Karabakh, Shusha, Nagorno Karabakh, Azerbaijan, Karabakh War, Nagorno Karabakh Conflict.
The clip was filmed in 1973 and narrates about ancient city of Azerbaijan - Susha - the cradle of Azerbaijani culture and history. The fortress Shusha was built by founder of Karabakh Khanate Panakh Ali Khan and remained its capital up until 1823 when it was conquered by Russian Empire.
In 1992 the city was captured by armenian armed forces and historical heritage associated with Azerbaijani Muslim culture was either destroyed or colossally damaged. But Christian heritage of ancient Caucasian Albania misappropriate by Armenians.
Shusha is part of the Republic of Azerbaijan, with the status of an administrative division of the surrounding Shusha District. Shusha Situated at an altitude of 1400--1800 metres (4,600-5,900 ft) in the picturesque Karabakh mountains. Shusha was a popular mountain recreation resort in the Soviet era.
The town of Shusha was founded in 1752 by Panah Ali Khan. From the mid-18th century to 1822 Shusha was the capital of the Karabakh Khanate. The town became one of the cultural centers of the South Caucasus after the Russian conquest of the region in the first half of the 19th century. Over time, it became a city and a home to many Azerbaijani intellectuals, poets, writers and especially, musicians.
Shusha is considered Azerbaijan's main cultural heart which adds to the general bitterness felt over the town's continued occupation. Shusha sprang to prominence when Panakh Khan's re-born Khanate of Karabagh built the immodestly-named Panakhabad here. The khan erected a palace reminiscent of a Kew Garden greenhouse and he and his successor son, Ibrahim encouraged artists, writers and thinkers to congregate in what later became known as the 'Conservatory of the Caucasus'.
The name Shusha ('glass') comes not from the brittle structure of the palace but from a challenge by Persia's eunuch-Shah Mohammad Aga. As the ruthless Persian army approached, their leader supposedlv warned Khan Ibrahim 'God is pouring stones upon your head. Sit ye not then in thy fortress of glass'. However, thanks to Mohammad Aga's sudden death, the city held out and the ironic title 'Shusha' stuck. Nonetheless by this time Ibrahim Khan had already fled and in his absence the whole Karabagh government was overthrown and executed by Ibrahim's nephew. Amongst those to die was the great writer and philosopher Mollah-Panakh Vagif who had been Ibrahim's foreign minister.
Shusha's reputation for invincibility may have been one of the many factors which led Azeri leaders in 1992 to provide woefully inadequate protection for the city against Armenian attack. Shusha's carpet collection was rescued and taken to Baku but some of its cultural monuments (busts of Hajibeyov, Natavan et al) were lost, only to be miraculously salvaged from a Georgian metal dealer who'd bought them for scrap. The bullet-ridden busts are now displayed behind the National Gallery in Baku.
Once the cultural capital of the Azeris in the region (before the war of course), it is quite different from Stepanakert. The main difference is it is much easier to see signs of the recent conflict here. This was sort of the last stand of the Azeri forces. Once the Armenians took control of the city, the war was pretty much over. Many buildings still lie in ruins and there are numerous bullet holes sprayed along the walls. There are a couple of old mosques here, destroyed of course. And while some effort is made to rebuild, or at least tidy up, some areas, the mosques are left to rot.
The town itself, set on a precipice overlooking the impressive gorge of the Karkar has several points of interest. Part of the medieval town wall remains and two 19th-century churches have been restored, both striking with their very pale stone.

Azerbaijan made its own contribution into the establishment of the current culture and civilization, progress and dialectics.
The time kept a range of ancient archeological and architectural monuments for us. The ancient headstones, manuscripts and models of carpets, preserved to the present times from the ancient ages, can provide much information to those who can and want to read them. If you wish to understand Azerbaijan and to know everything about it, you need to look at this country and its people with a friend's eyes.
Azerbaijan is a country of ancient culture. The Oguz tribes which moved here and stayed for ages, have found a deeply rooted culture and in their turn enriched it with Turkic national traditions. The talented and creative powers of our nation are personified in such epic monuments as Kitabi-Dede Gorgud, Oguzname Keroglu and many others.
This fertile, generous and friendly land was the home of many thinkers, philosophers, scientists, poets, architects, musicians and artists. A legend tells that Zardusht was born in this land. Azerbaijan music
The nightingale of Azerbaijan
Murtuza Mammadov, the “nightingale” of the Azerbaijani people, was born in one of the most beautiful corners of Azerbaijan, the cradle of the Azerbaijani musical art and poetry – Nagorno-Karabakh`s Shusha City. He was called “nightingale” (“Bulbul” in Azerbaijani) for his incredibly beautiful voice.
Since his childhood, Bulbul was impressed by the beauty of his homeland and its music. He began his creative activity with folk songs and mugham.
Bulbul`s appearance on stage was always accompanied by loud ovation, and a lot of people gathered at his concerts. The news about Bulbul`s unrepeatable voice spread far beyond his country`s borders. However, the singer was not satisfied with the achieved success and was trying to conquer new heights.
“Bulbul was the first student – vocalist of Azerbaijan, the first vocal professor, but more importantly, he was the first Muslim, who went to Italy and switched from the national singing to studying the European school of singing. Later, he synthesized these two different schools,” said Bulbul`s granddaughter Adila Mammadova.
The unique voice, energy, generosity and kindness were the main characteristics of Bulbul. Many people asked him for help, and he was always trying to help needy people. The evidences of his activity are preserved at Bulbul`s Memorial Museum.
Bulbul`s Memorial Museum was established in 1976. All the documents and materials about the creative, scientific–research and public activity of the singer have been collected here. Till 1992, a subsidiary of the museum was operating at Bulbul`s ancestral home in Shusha. Nevertheless, after the occupation of the ancestral Azerbaijani lands by the Armenian Armed Forces, the museum was destroyed. The fate of the valuable exhibits collected there is still unknown. It was possible to save Bulbul`s bust riddled with bullets together with the busts of composer Uzeyir Hajibeyli and poetess Natavan. Currently, they are in the yard of the Art Museum in Baku. After many years of occupation, Bulbul`s son, Polad Bulbuloglu could visit his father`s house.
“The house, which was once flourishing, where there were guests, was in a horrible and destroyed situation. It is noteworthy to mention Polad` restraint, who passed this test steadfastly. For example, I lost my cool in one of the rooms. It was so painful and offending. Personalities like Bulbul are the evidence of the fact that Shusha is the ancestral Azerbaijani land,” said Farhad Badalbeyli the Rector Of Baku Musical Academy
Karabakh is not in vain called the cradle of Azerbaijan`s musical art. This very land gave Azerbaijan such great musicians as Uzeyir Hajibeyli, Niyazi, Fikrat Amirov and Rashid Behbudov. The activity of these genius composers still makes a priceless contribution to the treasury of not only the Azerbaijani, but also the world musical culture. The main dream of all the Azerbaijanis is to hear the wonderful works of the luminaries of the Azerbaijani musical art in liberated Nagorno-Karabakh.

Arshin Mal Alan (The Cloth Peddler), which is one of the most famous Azerbaijani movies, was shown on September 19, 2015 in Hollywood. Shot in 1945, this was the first-ever screening of the legendary musical comedy film in Hollywood. The screening was presented by the Consulate General of Azerbaijan in Los Angeles.
The iconic movie, which has already been shown in 136 countries in 86 languages, was re-mastered and colorized in 2013 in Los Angeles at the initiative of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation of Azerbaijan. Namely, this new version of the film was screened at Hollywood’s renowned Montalban Theater – the first fully automated theater in America.
“Arshin Mal Alan” is based on the operetta of the same name by great Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyli. The operetta is regarded as the first operetta in the Muslim world. The screening was dedicated to the 130th anniversary of Uzeyir Hajibeyli, 100th anniversary of the film’s main character, legendary singer Rashid Behbudov, and 70th anniversary of the film.
Welcoming the audience, Azerbaijan’s Consul General in Los Angeles Nasimi Aghayev informed the attendees about “Arshin Mal Alan”. Mentioning the fact that in 2001 Azerbaijan’s National Leader Heydar Aliyev advised the film to be restored to its original quality, the Consul General invited the audience to watch the said speech. Then the video of Heydar Aliyev’s speech was shown. Aghayev noted that this advice of the National Leader was fulfilled when the film was colorized and re-mastered in 2013 at the initiative of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. The Consul General said that this enormously important project gave “Arshin Mal Alan” a new life. Speaking of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the Consul General highlighted the various cultural projects implemented by the Foundation under the dynamic leadership of Azerbaijan’s First Lady Mrs Mehriban Aliyeva, in Azerbaijan and abroad, for the promotion of Azerbaijani music and culture.
Noting the fact that September 18 is Uzeyir Hajibeyli’s birthday, Nasimi Aghayev expressed his gratitude to the City of Los Angeles as well as to six other cities in California for proclaiming this date as the “Uzeyir Hajibeyli Memorial Day” in their respective cities. Speaking of Azerbaijan’s legendary singer Rashid Behbudov, Aghayev said that Behbudov’s beautiful voice and great acting played the vital role in the success of the movie “Arshin Mal Alan”.
Then the daughter of Rashid Behbdov, Mrs. Rashida Rashid, who visited Los Angeles to attend the screening, was given the floor. In her remarks, Mrs. Rashid shared the memories of her father about the film. She thanked the Heydar Aliyev Foundation for this wonderful accomplishment and called it a great contribution to the preservation of Azerbaijan’s cultural heritage. She characterized the screening of “Arshin Mal Alan” in Los Angeles – the center of the global film industry – as an event of historic magnitude.
Afterwards the floor was given to the individuals who played a direct role in the colorization and re-mastering of the film: Igor Lopatonok, CEO of Global 3 Pictures; Price Pethel, visual effects specialist, Oscar Award winner in 2002; Jane Hicks, art director for films by many Hollywood companies including Sony Pictures and Walt Disney Studios. The speakers expressed their immense satisfaction of being part of these projects and stressed the importance of “Arshin Mal Alan” for the world culture.
Then the movie was screened. Once again, “Arshin Mal Alan” easily won hearts and minds, mesmerizing the audience with its witty plot, amazing music, great singing and flawless acting.
Azərbaycan Xalq Cümhuriyyətinin, indi isə müstəqil Azərbaycanın dövlət himninin musiqisi Üzeyir bəyə məxsusdur:
Ə.Cavadın sözlərinə bəstələdiyi “Çırpınırdın, Qara dəniz” mahnısı təkcə Azərbaycanda deyil, Türkiyədə də çox məşhurdur. “Sevgili canan”, “Sənsiz” romansları isə Müslüm Maqomayevin ifasında Azərbaycan musiqi xəzinəsinin ən dəyərli incilərindən hesab olunur.
Bəstəkar və publisist. Bu iki söz çox nadir hallarda yanaşı işlədilir. Üzeyir bəy də belə nadir şəxsiyyətlərdən biridir ki, həm bəstəkar olub, həm də publisist. “Ü”, “Filankəs”, “Behmankəs” və başqa gizli imzalarla felyetonlar yazıb. Onun “Ordan-burdan” başlığı altında dərc olunan felyetonları öz dövrü üçün çox dəyərli idi.
Dahi bəstəkar dövrünün ən yüksək mükafatlarına və fəxri adlarına, o cümlədən SSRİ Xalq Artisti adına layiq görülüb.
1948-ci ildə vəfat edən Üzeyir Hacıbəylinin dəfnində görünməmiş izdiham yaşanır. Onun cənazəsi Bülbülün ifasında “Sənsiz” romansının sədaları altında qaldırılır və Fəxri xiyabanda dəfn olunur.
Onun haqqında “Üzeyir ömrü”, “Üzeyir Hacıbəyov”, “Əbədi iftixarımız” filmləri çəkilib. Dahi bəstəkarın doğum günü 1995-ci ildən Azərbaycanın Milli Musiqi Günü kimi qeyd edilir. Artıq 5 ildir ki, ölkəmizdə Üzeyir Hacıbəyli Beynəlxalq Musiqi festivalı keçirilir.
Bakı Musiqi Akademiyası, Azərbaycan Bəstəkarlar İttifaqının möhtəşəm salonu, Azərbaycan Dövlət simfonik orkestri, paytaxtımızın mərkəzi küçələrindən biri onun adını daşıyır. Bakıda memorial ev-muzeyi fəaliyyət göstərir. Bakı Musiqi Akademiyasının qarşısında heykəli qoyulub.
Üzeyir Hacıbəyli sözün həqiqi mənasında Azərbaycan musiqisinin tacıdır. #ÜzeyirHacıbəyov #ÜzeyirBəyHacıbəyli #DahiBəstəkar

Azerbaijan also enriched the humankind with such geniuses as Nizami Ganjevi, Hagani Shirvani, Bahmanyar, Nasimi, Fizuli, Nasreddin Tusi, Shah Ismail Xatai, Mullah Paneh Vagif, A. Bakikhanov, M.F. Axudov, M.A. Sabir, J.Mamedguluzade, Huseyn Javid, J.Jabarli, Samed Vurgun, Aliaga Vahid, Rasul Rza.
The country of Azerbaijan was immortalized by such talented painters as Sattar Bahlulzade, Tahir Salahov, Togrul Narimanbeyov, Mikayil Abdullayev and many others.
Our national music - mugam - inspired such outstanding composers as Uzeyir Hajibeyov, Muslim Magomayev, Gara Garayev, Fikret Amirov, Niyazi, Arif Melikov and others to create their masterpieces, which are still known today throughout the world. It also gave the inspiration to such wonderful vocalists as Bulbul and Rashid Behbudov.
It seems that the famous Azerbaijan carpets are the incarnation of all colors of nature and of all signs of history. Today, these carpets magically pass the borders of time and space and travel from Azerbaijan to foreign countries far away.
The models of the decorative art made by Azerbaijan craftsmen from the metal, ceramic, silk and woods are kept in many museums of the world.

22 APRIL PROTEST- ANOTHER STEP TOWARDS DEMOCRACY
On April 22nd the Public Chamber held its second authorized meeting in the yard of a driving school in Bayil district. The demonstration was delayed because police officers prevented people from entering the area. The same thing happened in the last protest on April 8th.
Popular Front Party deputy chairman Hasan Karimov said that buses towards the designated location were cancelled, and people had to walk to Bayil. The electricity supply was cut, but generators were in place. The police checked the ages of all participants and under-18s were not allowed to take part in the meeting, which was a source of contention.
Members of the opposition, supporters, non-party members, civil society representatives, international observers and the police were at the demonstration, which had a high level of youth participation. There were flags from political parties and different slogans on display.
The rally opened with the Koroglu overture by Uzeyir Hajibeyov. The participants greeted the opposition leaders with applause. The ruling regime must be brought down as it is not ready for the necessary reforms, and society should speed up this change, was the main message.
The rally was moderated by Ibrahim Ibrahimli. Musavat Party chairman Isa Gambar made the first speech. He said that there is a constant struggle between good and evil in Azerbaijan: They cut off the electricity here as they do everywhere in Azerbaijan. We will win because now we are supported by the world.
A group of young people had slogans including, Freedom for prisoners of conscience!, We want democracy!, Resign!, Freedom!
Citizens who believe their rights have been violated by the government issued strong criticisms against the ruling regime.
PFP chairman Ali Karimli said, The April 8th meeting achieved its goal. The authorities are afraid of us. We demand freedom and democracy for our people, and if they don't meet our demands, the people will rise up against them! He called for people to fight for democracy.
At the end a resolution was read, and the rally was closed with a rendition of the national anthem.
