Valdichiana Living [DIRECTOR'S CUT]

Montepulciano, Siena, Tuscany, Italy, Europe
Montepulciano is an Italian town of 13984 inhabitants in the province of Siena in Tuscany. The municipality is located at 605 meters above sea level, between the Valdichiana and the Val d'Orcia. Of ancient and long history, Montepulciano has origins from the Etruscan people from the 4th century BC It has notoriety also for the richness of excellent vineyards, from which the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG is obtained. Montepulciano rises in a vast hilly area of the Tuscan hinterland, in a dominant position with respect to the Valdichiana, once marshy. The municipal territory extends in the south-eastern sector of the region on the border with Umbria and not far from Lazio. The inhabited center has characteristics of a medieval village in the shape of an S and is enclosed within three circles of walls, all built around the fourteenth century. Of Etruscan origin and founded, according to the legend by Porsenna, Lucumone di Chiusi; some documents and artifacts found in the Fortress date back its existence as early as the 4th-3rd century BC In Roman times it was the site of an army defending consular roads. It was evangelized by San Donato, bishop of Arezzo in the 4th century. In the place of the present Church of the Madonna di San Biagio, there was the Sancta Mater Ecclesia in Pulliciano Castle, so in a document dated 715 in the Lombard period it underwent its first development; in fact in some notarial deeds of the Archive of the Abbey of the SS. Salvatore sull'Amiata, there are documents including one from 806 and witnesses, all from Montepulciano, were priests, clerics, a doctor and a goldsmith, a sign of a high civil and cultural level. In the twelfth century the Republic of Siena, wanting to subdue Montepulciano, free and rich, began a series of wars, which the Poliziani faced with the help of Perugia and Orvieto, but more assiduously and with alternate results, with the support of Florence. At the beginning of the thirteenth century the vitality of the city, promoted by the initiative of the mercantile, manufacturing and agricultural bourgeoisie, began to attract the sights of Florence and Siena. The fourteenth century was marked by strong disputes over power among the major families; a relative stability came about under the Del Pecora family who, divided inside them to support Florence, Siena or Perugia, became Lords of Valiano and tyrants of Montepulciano. In 1390 Montepulciano allied permanently with Florence, which was anxious to have a strategic stronghold south of Siena. From the early fifteenth century to the mid-sixteenth century, Montepulciano had its golden age, marked by political stability, cultural prestige and artistic flourishing. The fifteenth century was the era of the humanist Bartolomeo Aragazzi, apostolic secretary of Pope Martin V and the poet Angelo Poliziano. An exceptional building fervor marked the 16th century: architects such as Antonio da Sangallo the Elder, Jacopo Barozzi known as Vignola, Baldassarre Peruzzi, Ippolito Scalza erected sumptuous patrician residences, splendid churches and various points of the urban center were embellished. In this period lived the Cardinal Marcello Cervini, who sat on the papal throne for only 28 days with the name of Marcello II. In 1511, the Poliziani, having concluded the final peace with the Florentines, engraved the following inscription on the door and on the architrave of the council hall: Recuperatio Libertatis, A.D. 1511. From 1559, with the submission of Siena to the Medici principality, Montepulciano lost part of its past strategic and political importance, but maintained its prestige. In Montepulciano, historical Polizian families of the Nobles were established: Tarugi, Contucci, Bellarmino, Ricci, Cervini, Benci, Cini, Cocconi and many others, who gave great men to the Church, to letters, arts and weapons: a great pontiff, many cardinals, many tens of bishops, distinguished prelates in large numbers and a great number of men who were excellent in many disciplines. One of his most devoted sons, Cardinal Giovanni Ricci, in 1561, obtained from Pope Pius IV, with the consent of the Grand Duke, that Montepulciano be decorated with the episcopal see and the title of the city. Montepulciano thus obtained the elevation to an episcopal see and the subsequent demolition of the ancient parish to build the imposing cathedral (1594) to a design by Ippolito Scalza and according to the principles of the Counter-Reformation, of which one of the emeritus fathers was the poliziano cardinale Roberto Bellarmino. On the death of Cardinal Giovanni Ricci, the Grand Duke Ferdinando left the Captains of Montepulciano and Pietrasanta to the free government of the Grand Duchess Cristina of Lorraine who remained there until his death in 1636.

MONTEPULCIANO, SIENA, ITALY (1 of 2)

The city of Montepulciano has a past tied in part to two important regional cross roads (From Chiusi to Arezzo running south to north, and from the Valdorcia to the Valdichiana and to Trasimeno running east to west) and its strategic position at the border of the area of influence of various powerful, medieval based cities (Orvieto, Perugia, Siena, Florence). This happened in the first centuries of the second millennium when its riches and power were considerably developed, to the point of the city becoming a desired prey and acquired for itself of an appreciable autonomy that can be clearly seen in its alliance with the leading cities around it which were in perennial conflict among themselves.
Unfortunately its final entrance in the Florentine state, after 1511, although it developed an important style (which is reflected in the important public and private buildings realised after that date and the establishment of the diocese in 1561) it suffered a slow economic and social decline, and at one point in the 18th century the Granduke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo became concerned, and looked into ways to give back some life to the very prestigious centre that had started to decay. In the 19th century the drainage of the Valdichiana renewed the importance of the city and it became the administration centre of the area signalling an appreciable revitalization, however this did not last beyond the middle of the 20th century. A population loss in the valley due to immigration to the north of many farmers who were transformed into the workforce for factories, and the changing ways of cultivating the land, which has not been completely compensated for by a similar growth of the small and medium industrial businesses. The prestigious art and history of the city has again an appreciable fascination also at a international level, and by this it is hoped, that Montepulciano will be able to make itself known as a centre of cultural development.

A fabulous Tuscany wine tasting experience!
I have just returned from my last visit to our beloved Tuscany, and every time I return from Val d'Orcia and Valdichiana I return full of emotions that the colors, flavors, hospitality and essence give me, the magnificent traditions that families continue to maintain as if time had never passed. I attended the Palio dei Somari in Torrita di Siena, eaten in enchanting places, and visited accommodation in period residences where I was welcomed as if I were their daughter; in Chiusi they made me sit at the table to have a snack with carrot cake and homemade almonds, accompanied by a yogurt mousse.
And the Tuscan wine, the Red wine so loved by many, so cared for and respected with sacredness. I had the honor of speaking with Francesca, a pleasant tour guide of the highest competence who tells me, with love and passion, about her territory.
