Last night trying to hold on to the beauty before heading west again
Valley of Fires - New Mexico
Today we took another short ~75 mile trip north to Valley of Fires in Carrizozo, NM. This is a beautiful campground elevated just over a huge volcanic rock flow formed over 5000 years ago! The volcanic flow, emanating from volcanic vents - not a volcano, spans 44 miles long, up to 5 miles wide, and more than 165 feet thick! This campground overlooks the lava flow and offers a beautiful 3/4 mile trail thru the lava so you can get up close and see all its wonders!

While traveling through New Mexico we stopped to check out the Valley of Fires Recreation Area. This area is located about 4 miles outside the town of Carrizozo New Mexico off of Hwy 380. This area of the Tularosa Basin is covered with a thick layer of crusty black lava rock and one would expect this area to be barren, but the exact opposite is true. It is truly alive with life and very beautiful indeed. Put this location on your list of must see places, you will not be disappointed.

Valley of Fires Recreation Area
Valley of Fires Recreation Area is located immediately adjacent to the Malpais Lava Flow. Approximately 5,000 years ago, Little Black Peak erupted and flowed 44 miles into the Tularosa Basin, filling the basin with molten rock. The resulting lava flow is four to six miles wide, 160 feet thick, and covers 125 square miles. The lava flow is considered to be one of the youngest lava flows in the continental United States.
From a distance, Valley of Fires appears as barren rock but when you walk through the nature trail there are many varieties of flowers, cactus, trees, and bushes typical of the Chihuahuan desert. Animals include bats, roadrunners, quail, cottontails, mule deer, barberry sheep, and lizards. It's also a virtual birdwatcher's paradise with great horned owls, burrowing owls, turkey vultures, hawks, gnat catchers, cactus wrens, sparrows, and golden eagles.

While RVing through southern New Mexico we came across this cool little BLM campground called Valley of Fires National Rec Area perched above a huge lava field. We just had to stop and check it out for a few nights.
In this video I show you the campground, surrounding views and a walk down in the lava field.
At 18 bucks a night including water and electric this campground offered great value, especially considering the gorgeous views.

Valley of the Fires New Mexico
Molten hot rock from the core of the earth has found its way to the surface here and I find this to be a sacred place with grounding energy surrounded by the open expansive peacefulness of the desert that is so appealing to me. Valley of the Fires New Mexico, Located Four miles west of the Town of Carrizozo NM on US hwy 380. Thousands of years ago, lava spewed from vents at the northern end of the flow and traveled 44 miles along the floor of the Tularosa Basin. Little Black Peak to the North is one of the origins of the lava flow here. Malpais Nature Trail is a less than a mile long and loops through the lava flow.
