First Time in VIETNAM - Exploring Ho Chi Minh City
We landed in bustling Ho Chi Minh City for our first time in Vietnam! We had a great time exploring Ho Chi Minh City and will be traveling Vietnam for the next 28 days. Without a real plan, we visited Ho Chi Minh Square to learn some history of Ho Chi Minh City. We also played frogger with the thousands of motorbikes trying to cross the streets, haha.
Our first stop after the 2 hour travel to Vietnam from Malaysia was Ho Chi Minh Square. We got stopped by some local Vietnamese scouts who tried to help teach us a Vietnamese language phrase. We sucked really badly but they were nice and persistent. Finally, Ryan spoke Vietnamese! Ho Chi Minh Square is located in District 1 Saigon which is right in the middle of the city. District 1 Ho Chi Minh City is also the main tourist hub in HCM, Vietnam.
We aren’t sure if it’s better to call the city Saigon Vietnam or Ho Chi Minh Vietnam, so please leave us a comment down below and let us know which one is correct! While walking the streets and exploring Ho Chi Minh City, we got thirsty and decided to try Vietnamese coffee for the first time. Stacia loved the Vietnamese coffee but since it’s 2x stronger than regular coffee she couldn’t finish the whole thing.
Before finding the best things to do in Ho Chi Minh, we decided we wanted to get a feel for local life in Saigon. We quickly saw that the traffic in Ho Chi Minh City is a BIG part of daily life so we decided to test our luck crossing the busy streets. I can’t put into words how busy the streets of Saigon are, so you’ll just have to watch the video to see for yourself. It was a true frogger moment!
Being Americans in Vietnam, we are very interested in the war history of the Vietnam War. We were told there is an American War museum we need to check out which we will do off camera to spare sharing some deep emotional stuff with you guys. There are so many things to do in Saigon we can’t wait to explore the city for the month! If you have any suggestions for things to do in Vietnam, please leave a comment down below.
We have uploaded Vietnamese subtitles for any of you who would like to read in Vietnamese. We hope to hear from you guys in the comments and thanks for watching our first Vietnam travel vlog!
* We’re Ryan & Stacia from DeathbyVlog. Unlike other travel vloggers, we live and work in a different country each month with a moderate housing budget. Sorry, but no backpacker lifestyle here! Our channel will show you what it’s like to live abroad while exploring top tourist destinations and hidden gems. We will show you mouthwatering local food tours, provide history on each destination, and cinematic broll for all of you film lovers. Each month we rent an apartment or airbnb in a different city or country, so follow along on this journey and learn about countries around the world. We hope you enjoy our travel vlog, don’t forget to subscribe!

Pham Ngu Lao nightlife is also one of Ho Chi Minh’s finest, with throngs of street vendors, bia hoi stalls, lively bars, and downtown clubs filling up the lively scene. Interesting nightlife entertainment spots include The View Rooftop Bar, Seventeen Saloon, Go 2 and Crazy Buffalo Nightclub as well as many smaller pubs that are known for their cheap drinks and happy hour promos. It’s also common around here to meet friendly expats who are more than happy to share a few tips about travelling in and beyond Vietnam. If you want to immerse yourself in the local culture, we highly suggest getting up early and visit the parks within the area. It is interesting to see (and even to join in on) the elders participating in Tai Chi-like exercise sessions. Another must-do is heading to the morning markets such as Ben Tanh Market, where local vendors sell a wide array of fresh produce, household supplies, and Vietnamese street food at attractive prices. As Pham Ngu Lao is not such a large area, it’s the perfect place to explore on foot - the best time to do this is in the morning and late afternoon as the weather can be rather scorching at the height of the day. If you’re feeling adventurous, there are also travel agencies that can help arrange for day trips within the city centre and beyond.

Vietnam: How to travel around? From Ho Chi Minh City to Sapa...
Here you can see the cities where we stopped (south to north) and the distance between each city.
1. Hồ Chí Minh (4-5 hours to Mũi Né)
2. Cần Thơ (Mekon Delta)
3. Mũi Né (4-5 hours to Đà Lạt)
4. Đà Lạt (3-4 hours to Nha Trang + 11 – 12 hours to Hội An)
5. Nha Trang: you shouldn’t stop here – touristy, expensive and nothing special.
6. Hội An (30 min to Danang + 3 hours to Huế)
7. Huế (4-5 hours to Phong Nha-Ke Bang)
8. Phong Nha-Ke Bang (7,5 hours to Tam Cốc)
9. Tam Cốc (3,5 hours to Hải Phòng + 2 hours to Cat Ba town)
10. Cat Ba (4-5 hours to Ha Noi)
11. Ha Noi (5 hours to Sa Pa by bus/8 hours by train)
12. Sa Pa
Transport all around Vietnam
Open bus ticket
We bought our open bus ticket in Ho Chi Minh City at TheSinhTourist office. We were really satisfied with this company. Drivers were nice and reliable most of the times . You can choose how many stops you want to do. You need to reconfirm each bus ride by calling or visiting the counter. Of course it is also possible to book single bus tickets but this way you pay more. Unfortunately the open bus ticket doesn’t include all stops. You won’t be able to reach places like Phong Nha-Ke Bang, Tam Cốc or Cat Ba. So we booked the open bus ticket from Hồ Chí Minh to Huế. All the other stops we made (8. to 12.) we reached by single bus rides or train. We paid 684.000 VND for the open bus ticket (26,50 €/$ 30).
By motorbike
We met many travellers who either bought a motorbike in Ha Noi or in Ho Chi Minh. It is for sure very beautiful and a unique experience but we considered it as too dangerous. One amazing part of Vietnam is impossible to visit if you don’t have a motorbike: the route between Hội An and Huế (called the Hải Vân Pass). An other option is to travel with Easy Riders: you have your own motorbike rider. There is even enough space to transport your backpack and they organize launch as accommodation.
By train
Travel around by train is very nice. But take care – never buy tickets online. Just go to the train station and buy the ticket at the counter. The website seat61.com gives some helpful advice how to buy train tickets and how to read a Vietnamese train ticket.
In Vietnam there are many people who try to sell you tickets for a much higher price.

Quick Tips Vietnam - Visa, Currency, SIM Cards, and Other Travel Tips
Travel tips for traveling to Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi in Vietnam:
Follow me on Instagram to stay up to date with my adventures: @rhanzpants
Travel Tips:
1. Visa - go to the link below to apply for a Visa online. For the photo you need to get an actual TWO copies taken at a store like CVS/Costco HOWEVER tell them not to cut it because the photo required for the Visa is a different size from a passport. Check out the Visa approval letter for instructions.
2. Immigration - for either Ho Chi Minh or Hanoi airports head towards immigration but before you get in line there's a separate area to get your actual Visa. Remember you only have an approval letter and not a Visa. You will need to give them your passport, letter and fee to be paid in US Dollars (the amount should be in your email or letter). Once you get your Visa head towards immigration as usual.
3. SIM cards - if your phone doesn't seem to work then I suggest you get a SIM card, granted your phone is unlocked. There are a lot of booths everywhere selling these. I got unlimited data for about a week for $9 USD. Other quick tip, bring a small paperclip with you so you can switch the SIM card back later for when you leave Vietnam.
4. Currency - you will need to exchange for local currency. I recommend using ATMs instead of the currency exchange for better rates. If there are multiple ATMs check out the fee for each before withdrawing.
5. How to get around - if you can't walk somewhere Uber was available at both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh.
6. Where to stay - stay near night market. Check out below.
Ho Chi Minh - I stayed at Majestic Saigon - was about 15 min walk to night market
Hanoi - I stayed at Emerald Waters - location, quality, and service was great. Within the old quarter and within walking distance of shops and street food.
7. Crossing the streets - look both ways, be careful, be confident, and just go for it!
8. Be mindful of travel times - streets are very congested and a lot of traffic so make sure to allot extra travel time.
9. Street food and night market - see below. Note Hanoi night market is only Friday-Sunday but there are tons of street food all over the city either way.
Ho Chi Minh - Ben Thanh market was where I went. Lots of shops and street food. Try the grilled seafood!
Hanoi - I didn't go to the night market but just walk around the Old Quarter near St. Joseph's cathedral below on Nha Chung street.
10. Halong Bay - there are a lot of tours available and I booked through Viator. Personally I think one night was enough on a cruise. I booked on V'Spirit Overnight Halong Bay Cruise. Note that while food is included in the cost, drinks are NOT, and this includes water and tea.
**Airport Lounge Tips
Ho Chi Minh - Priority Pass lounge is available at the international terminal. After security make a left and head towards gate 10-14. You will see an unassuming sliding door next to a small pop-up shop that will lead stairs. Head downstairs. It's called the Orchid Lounge. I did not check out the lounge in the domestic terminal but it looks like there's one.
Hanoi - there are no lounges available for Priority Pass or Amex.

A video showing Gia Vien hotel in Saigon, it is one of my favourite places to stay when on Visa runs to Vietnam...
Parts of this video include:
0:04 Intro
0:30 VIP room, 28 sq m ($45)
4:00 Bathroom
5:14 Saigon city noise
6:11 Standard room without window ($31)
8:07 Nice bars and restaurants outside the hotel
8:47 Outro
Additional notes:
The Good, the bad and the ugly:
Good:
- Fantastic location for the bars and restaurants of Bui Vien street
- Girl friendly (no extra fees to pay at reception)
- Clean, functional rooms
- Good value for the area
The bad:
- Many rooms are windowless, this might put some people off
- No swimming pool or fitness center
The ugly:
- If you have a room with a window it could be very noisy
Overall: I really like Gia Vien hotel in Saigon, it ticks a lot of boxes and is very good value for the area. I actually preferred the windowless room on this visit as it was much quieter than the VIP room. I would probably book a standard windowless room next time I stay as I'm hardly in the room at all when in Saigon...
Thank you for watching, and subscribe for more videos.
NB: Saigon / Ho Chi Minh City are the same city, the name was changed after the 70s. The locals all call it Saigon so that's what I call it here.

Vietnam Travel Guide: Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ho Chi Minh
Gorgeous beaches, fascinating and complicated history, incredible food, lush nature; Vietnam is a country that truly has it all. Whether this country is first or fiftieth on your list, our travel guide has all the information you need to know if you’re planning (or dreaming of planning!) a trip to Vietnam.
Leave your expectations behind if you’re heading to Vietnam: here, you’ll eat noodles for breakfast, do your shopping in the middle of the night, and discover a country with a new story around every corner.
Hanoi more than delivers on urban excitement. If you’re looking for unique and mouth-watering food, the night markets of the Vietnamese capital should be your very first stop. You can enjoy a zippy ride on a scooter, all the street-food you can eat, and a night exploring the rapid development of this modern city. From trendy clubs to traditional puppet shows, experience a nightlife that’s all Vietnam’s own, and eat and drink the night away with locals and visitors alike!
Of course, Vietnam isn’t all fast-paced cities and rooftop bars. For a slower pace, head to Ha Long Bay and sail alongside limestone islets, with their lush rainforests towering above your head. The water is emerald-green, matching the vibrant greenery, and a sailing excursion here is like nothing else you’ve experienced before! A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the islets of Ha Long Bay are said have been thrown into the bay by a dragon protecting the people of Vietnam. Take a junk boat tour for a close encounter, or try scuba diving or snorkelling in the bay!
You’ll find a new adventure around every corner in Vietnam. From breakfast in the Bình Tây Market and a secret tunnel system in Ho Chi Minh City, to sailing along the Mekong Delta in a traditional basket boat, you can find your perfect trip - no matter what that looks like - somewhere in Vietnam.
There’s no time like the present to start planning an adventure of your own in this majestic country, so why not start today? Head over to TourRadar to explore the range of tours available, or watch more of our videos exploring Vietnam if you still haven’t gotten enough of seeing the beautiful views and incredible adventures you could be having.
