Mount Vesuvius and Herculaneum Day Trip in Naples, Italy Travel Guide Video Transcript:
The journey from Pompeii to Herculaneum is a scenic one with Mount Vesuvius to one side and the Bay of Naples to the other. It only took us 20 minutes to get there by train, so if you’re looking for a day trip, it doesn’t get much easier than this one. Just maybe don’t get off in the outskirts of town like we did, but more on that later.
Vesuvio's Express is a shuttle service that runs to the top of the volcano, so if you’re expecting a guided tour filled with lots of interesting facts, this isn’t it.
That being said, we were perfectly happy to tour the site on our own, and we couldn’t beat the price at 20 Euros per person.
The only problem we encountered was that the roads were completely iced over the further we went up the mountain, and at one point the bus just had to give up and let all the passengers off to go the rest of the way on foot.
Things got a little easier once we swapped icy paved roads for a dirt trail, though we also had snow to contend with, but we eventually reached the top. I would say one of the coolest things about hiking up to Mount Vesuvius was being able to see that it’s a volcano within a volcano, and while there was no bubbling lava visible to the eye, we could see steam rising from several vents.
Our next stop after lunch were the ruins of Herculaneum, an ancient Roman town that was destroyed by Mount Vesuvius. While Pompeii was covered in ash, Herculaneum was hit by the pyroclastic flow that followed the explosion of 79 AD, which also led to its preservation.
What at first glance appears to be a moat, is Herculaneum’s ancient shoreline. Here we were met with the aftermath of the explosion: a row of old boat houses, each of them filled with the skeleton remains of those who did not escape during the first day of the eruption.
This is part of our Travel in Italy video series showcasing Italian food, Italian culture and Italian cuisine.

Naples: on the top of Vesuvius | Italia Slow Tour
Amazing trekking inside the natural reserve on the slopes of Vesuvius, walking up to the crater on top. The crater has changed appearance, shape and size with every eruption: Vesuvius is currently going through a period of dynamic rest, but it is an active volcano. It's one of the most visited places in the world and at least 600 thousand people visit it every year, even if is it one of the most explosive volcanoes ever. The natural park all around is a miracle: 8,500 hectares of extraordinary biodiversity. The volcano cyclically destroys all the flora and fauna settling here, but immediately after, nature very gradually begins taking possession of the lava and the environment. Such a powerful balance to preserve!

Italy, Naples: Walking up the amazing Mount Vesuvius POV
Mount Vesuvius (pronunciation: /vᵻˈsuːviəs/; Italian: Monte Vesuvio [ˈmonte veˈzuːvjo]; Neapolitan: Vesuvio; Latin: Mons Vesuvius [mõːs wɛˈsʊwɪ.ʊs]; also Vesevus or Vesaevus in some Roman sources)[1] is a somma-stratovolcano located on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, Italy, about 9 km (5.6 mi) east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. It is one of several volcanoes which form the Campanian volcanic arc. Vesuvius consists of a large cone partially encircled by the steep rim of a summit caldera caused by the collapse of an earlier and originally much higher structure.
Mount Vesuvius is best known for its eruption in AD 79 that led to the burying and destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, as well as several other settlements. The eruption ejected a cloud of stones, ashes and volcanic gases to a height of 33 km (21 mi), spewing molten rock and pulverized pumice at the rate of 6×105 cubic metres (7.8×105 cu yd) per second,[2] ultimately releasing a hundred thousand times the thermal energy released by the Hiroshima-Nagasaki bombings.[3] More than 1,000 people died in the eruption, but exact numbers are unknown. The only surviving eyewitness account of the event consists of two letters by Pliny the Younger to the historian Tacitus.[4]
Vesuvius has erupted many times since and is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years. Today, it is regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of the population of 3,000,000 people living nearby and its tendency towards violent, explosive eruptions of the Plinian type, making it the most densely populated volcanic region in the world.[5]
Trip to Mount Vesuvius. Weekend in Naples, Italy. May 2017.
A short video of my trip from Pompeii to Mount Vesuvius during a weekend in Naples, Italy. The video was recorded in the end of May 2017. The volcano was very peaceful at the time but about two weeks smoke was rising above the volcano. However, the smoke was not coming from the volcano crater but from a fire in a nearby forest. Residents of the nearby villages had to be evacuated. If you want to visit Mount Vesuvius, one of the options is to take a bus from the train station in Pompeii to the Vesuvius National Park. The bus stops some 750 meters from the top and you have to walk up a path covered with volcanic sand. It's hot and windy but definitely worth the effort. The views of the Bay of Naples and the Vesuvius crater are just amazing!

ESCCursion for EnglishCommunity Caserta - The Vesuvius National Park, Naples
A unique experience!
Mount Vesuvius, the world's most dangerous volcano and also one of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe. The current shape of the volcano is the result of the continual alternation between explosive type eruptions, which have produced pyroclastic deposits, and effusive type ones, which instead have produced lava; the resulting
volcanic structure is defined as volcanic stratum.
Located in the National Park, the summit of the volcano is open to visitors, who can reach the top of the mountain ( Gran Cono ) and observe the 300 meter deep crater.

POMPEI WALKING TOUR, MT VESUVIUS, NAPLES
Pompeii was an ancient Roman city near modern Naples in the Campania region of Italy, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area was buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Many of the inhabitants were also buried before they could escape...

Mount Vesuvius - summit to crater
Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79 and buried the famous ancient Roman town of Pompeii as well as the lesser well known but equally fascinating town of Herculaneum.
In this video you can follow me from the summit up to the crater.
Vesuvius is a National Park and you will need either a car or go on a tour bus to reach the summit. The walk from the summit to the crater is easy and the track is even (but watch your step at all times) and not too steep. Being reasonably fit and healthy is essential to hike to the crater, but if you are not fit, you can climb slowly and stop to admire the views.
Mount Vesuvius is monitored 24/365 days for changes in seismic activity. The volcanologists who monitor the volcano say that at present it's a dormant/sleeping volcano but fear a catastrophic eruption on the scale of AD 79 will happen sometime in the future. Anyway you will notice a couple of steaming fumaroles around the rim of the crater indicating that the volcano is very much alive!
Mt Vesuvius Near Naples, Italy
The volcano Mt. Vesuvius sits next to the Bay of Naples, Italy. Its massive eruption in 79 AD killed more than a thousand people and destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and several other settlements.
This video was shot with a handheld camera during several separate bus tours. Some shots also show the Bay of Naples.
Hike to the top of Mount Vesuvius, Italy
Near the Circumvesuviana train stop at Pompeii, be sure to ride the congo-style bus to the Mount Vesuvius trail. It's a bumpy ride to the volcanic ash hiking trail that leads to the top of Mount Vesuvius where you walk to the crater rim. The hike is easy and well worth the chance to see the steaming crater and mountain-top view of Pompeii. Hope you enjoy my video tour!
You can hike around the rim (beyond the public trail) with a guide but you must make arrangements in advance.
Hiking up Mount Vesuvius in Naples Italy
The view from atop the Vesuvius is stunning. The bay of Naples is picturesque and beautiful. The volcano is still active as I was able to notice some spots which had smoke billowing out from the rocks, it’s an impressive crater. Fascinating to think this caused so much devastation in the nearby city of Pompeii nearly 2000 yrs. ago. Worth the visit if your in Naples.
Italy: Blazing Mount Vesuvius triggers evacuation of locals
Multiple fires broke out across Mount Vesuvius near Naples, Wednesday, forcing authorities to evacuate local residents.
Thick smokes billowed from several spots on the mountain, leading residents from surrounding towns and villages to believe that the volcano had erupted.
The fire threatens the national park surrounding the mountain, as well as adjacent landfill sites, sparking fears of toxic smoke being unleashed, reports say.
Local police reportedly allege that the fires were man-made but had not confirmed whether the fires were the result of arson.

Pompeii + Mount Vesuvius Day Trip ITALY
Took a day trip from Rome to Pompeii and back via a company I booked through Viator.com
The tour pickup was 7:30am at Piaza de Popolo, very easy to find the tour operators. Our guide was Stephanie, she was amazing. We had a local guide for the Pompeii site.
The total cost was about $155, included lunch at a nice restaurant and an AC minibus. Our group was about 16 people.
If you can make the journey there including the hike up Mount Vesuvius. It was a 13 hour day but well worth it.
Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius Cruise Tour in Italy
We tour Ancient Pompeii during our port stop in Naples with Viking Ocean Cruises. The ruins are incredibly well preserved, and you can walk the streets and see store fronts and homes that stood there when Mount Vesuvius erupted on August 24, 79 A.D. and covered the village in lava and ash.

Vesuvio - Archeology Zone - Italy
Vesuvio - Archeology - Italy. Mount Vesuvius (in Italian Monte Vesuvio and in Latin Mons Vesuvius) is a stratovolcano east of Naples, Italy. It is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years, although it is not currently erupting. The two other volcanoes in Italy, (Etna and Stromboli) are located on islands.
Mount Vesuvius is on the coast of the Bay of Naples, about nine kilometres (six miles) east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. It is conspicuous in the beautiful landscape presented by that bay, when seen from the sea, with Naples in the foreground.
Mount Vesuvius is best known for its eruption in AD 79 that led to the destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum and the death of 10,000 to 25,000 people. It has erupted many times since and is today regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of the population of 3,000,000 people living nearby and its tendency towards explosive (Plinian) eruptions. It is the most densely populated volcanic region in the world. Mount Vesuvius was regarded by the Greeks and Romans as being sacred to the hero and demigod Heracles/Hercules, and the town of Herculaneum, built at its base, was named after him. ( wikipedia )
Italian Parks - Vesuvius National Park
The Vesuvius National Park was set up following strong pressure from environmental groups whose aim was to protect the world's most famous volcano from human depredation and urban encroachment.
Since the setting up of the park, there has been a noticeable change of attitude in the area -- many harmful activities, such as wildfires, rubbish tips, illegal building and poaching, are now memories of the past. Their place has been taken by environmental engineering, cleaning operations and recovery of the natural surroundings with its flora and fauna.
It is a rewarding experience to move from the squalor of urban sprawl to the revived surroundings of the park with its plant and animal life including various species of hawks, foxes, hares, ring-doves and wood pigeons.
A park in the front line struggling against degradation -- a park which seems to have won an almost impossible battle.

A short climb from the car park leads to the edge of Vesuvius deep crater.
It looks peaceful yet there are clear signs of an internal fire ready to blow at any time
