EBU Lithuania marked 30th anniversary of first unsanctioned rally of the Soviet period

A rally was held on August 23, 1987, near the monument to poet Adomas Mickevicius (Adam Mickiewicz). Its purpose was to mark the 48th anniversary of the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop secret protocols that divided Eastern Europe among totalitarian Nazi Germany and Soviet Union.
‘We gather here to remember victims of Stalin and Hitler,’ at the beginning of the rally said Nijole Sadunaite, who was one of the organizers.
It was the first rally unsanctioned by the Soviet authorities during the entire Soviet occupation period and the first public anti-Soviet demonstration after the Spring of Kaunas in 1972.
‘It was not the day when the Movement has started, but the Movement was encouraged to start’, after commemorating the event said Vytautas Landsbergis, who was the first Head of State after Lithuania broke away from Soviet Union three years later after the rally in 1990.
The gathering of 1987 was sharply denounced in the official press and closely watched by the police, but it was not interrupted and showed that the ice in Soviet Union started to break.
‘Clearly, we could not expect anything like this. It looked like fantasies and fairytales’, said Vytautas Bogusis, who was one the organizers.
Two years later, in 1989, on the same day of August 23, around 2 million in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia joined hands in a 650-kilometer-long human chain stretching from Tallinn to Vilnius to mark 50 years since the signing of the German-Soviet Non-aggression Pact. It was the peak of people’s Movements in the Baltics which later broke away from Soviet Union and started the process which brought down Soviet Empire.
‘Back in 1990 we did not understand that we must write a history book together with Russian historians’, now regrets Petras Vaitiekunas, one of signatories of the Act that broke Lithuania away from Soviet Union in 1990.
'Because it was clear for us like two plus two are four that Stalinism is on the same criminal scale as Nazism, however, in Russia, even back then it was not so clear, and now the idea is deepening that Stalinism was a great thing worth replicating’, said Vaitiekunas.
August 23 is marked in Lithuania as the Day of Black Ribbon and Baltic Way.
