Rotorua Travel
Rotorua Travel - Tourism is a major industry in Rotorua, so tourist services are well developed. The Tourist Information Centre on the main road, Fenton Street, is a good starting point.
Rotorua is built over a geothermal hot spot. There are numerous natural vents, hot pools and other geothermal features in and around the city. Many of these are in parks and reserves. Natural eruptions of steam, hot water and mud occasionally occur in new locations. Many places have their own private geothermal bores for heating and water for bathing although private use of naturally occurring geothermal water and steam is controlled.
Rotorua sits on the shores of Lake Rotorua, and there are several other lakes nearby. So along with the geothermal wonders, many water-based activities such as fishing, boating and white water rafting are available.
Geologically, Rotorua is in the middle of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, named after Lake Taupo, the largest volcano in the area. This geologically active zone produces the heat that is needed to drive all the geothermal activity. Along with many volcanic hills and mountains, the zone contains several major volcanic calderas (large subsidence craters). These are important for tourism because they host the region's largest lakes (including Lake Taupo and Lake Rotorua), and because geothermal activity tends to occur around their edges. Rotorua caldera, some 22 km (14 mi) across, contains the city and Mount Ngongotaha as well as the lake. It was created in a huge eruption around a quarter of a million years ago.
Enjoy Your Rotorua Travel!

-- About this video --
Wahoo! We made to day 100 of New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year! Only 265 days to go! What better way to celebrate than mountain biking in Reefton?
How did we get to mountain biking in Reefton? Well the journey here was thanks to a bunch of friendly locals who are super keen to show us what their small town on the West Coast of the South Island is famous for. We go on a walking tour of Reefton with our hostel host from the Old Breadshop Backpackers, who introduces to a bunch of locals around town.
One thing leads to another and we are having drinks at the Broadway Tearooms having a conversation with a guy who wants to show us one of the mountain biking trails in Reefton. We are in!
Reefton boasts one of the best places for mountain biking in New Zealand with a huge range of trails close to the town. After picking up some bikes from the Reefton Sports Centre, we hit the Lookout Track.
We make our way up this hill at the back of Reefton to a lookout and then do some downhill mountain biking on the Zigzag Track in Reefton.
We downhill mountain bike all the way back to Reefton while crossing the Reefton swing bridge. Once we get back to our hostel, we are invited to go to a quiz night at the local pub.
So what do you think of mountain biking in Reefton? And have you had any friendly New Zealand locals experiences? Let us know in the comments.

Rotorua Travel Guide - New Zealand Memorable Moments
Rotorua Travel Guide - New Zealand Memorable Moments
Rotorua is known as the thermal wonderland of New Zealand. Its hot springs and geysers have attracted tourists for over a hundred years. Rotorua sits on the shores of Lake Rotorua of New Zealand. There are several other lakes nearby. Along with the geothermal wonders, there are also the more usual water activities such as fishing, boating and white water rafting. Tourism is a major industry in Rotorua, and for good reason, the tourism services are therefore well developed and visitors should definitely make a stop at the Tourist Information Centre on the main road, Fenton Street.
It has recently been refurbished. Wai-O-Tapu is also an entertaining day out.
Geologically, Rotorua is in the middle of the Taupo Volcanic Zone, which is named after Lake Taupo, the largest volcano in the area. There are four major volcanic calderas, which now contain lakes, and several more recognisable volcanoes in the surrounding area. It is this geologically active zone that produces the heat that is needed to drive all the geothermal activity.
Rotorua is about a 3-hour drive south from Auckland, with several nice towns and villages along the way. There are two main routes, via Hamilton initially travelling on State Highway 1 and then joining State Highway 5 at Tirau, or via Matamata on Route 27. The Matamata route is less busy and probably a more interesting bet for travellers, but sections of the road boast the highest accident rates in NZ, so caution is needed. Matamata is where Hobbiton was built for the Lord of the Rings. The set is now a tourist attraction.
Rotorua is one of the most common places to try the traditional maori feast, the Hangi. This earthen oven technique is similar to the Hawaiian Imu and results in a very distinctive smoky earthy flavour - well worth trying. There are numerous places to try a Hangi around Rotorua. There are many hotels, rental homes, backpackers, motor homes, camp grounds, motels and bed and breakfasts.
Heading south from Rotorua takes you to Taupo, a similar town on the side of New Zealand's largest lake. Northwest takes you to Te Puke, Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty coastline, a nice place to soak up the sun. There are two routes; via Te Puke and SH30 brings you into Tauranga via Mount Maunganui.Whakatane is another coastal town in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, with empty beaches and one of the best climates in terms of hours of sunshine. North leads to Hamilton, Waitomo or Raglan and south east into the sparsely populated, and ruggedly beautiful Urewera National Park and East Cape.

Two days in Rotorua, New Zealand
The geothermal wonderland that is Rotorua is known by many names. Officially nicknamed the “The Sulphur City” due to its unique aroma, more commonly as Rotovegas for its touristic nature or by the less kind-of-heart as Fartville”. It certainly has a unique place amongst the New Zealand landscape.
From bubbling mud pools to luxurious mud baths, Maori cultural experiences and adrenaline-fueled adventures you’ll never be bored.
No one should leave Rotorua without first experiencing the geothermal sites. These consist of well cordoned and guided paid sites to free hot pools in the city's parks and bush. Quite a sight (and smell) to behold. Places such as Te Puia and Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve also offer traditional Maori cultural shows and art.
Another must do is taking the Skyline Gondola up Mount Ngongotaha then luging your way down. Pro tip, buy at least 3 luge rides - it can take a ride or two to get the hang of things. They have a few track options ranging from beginner to kamikaze, so choose wisely and work your way up.
Afterwards, the iconic Polynesian Spa in the town centre is a nice way to unwind and soak your pains away. Though there’s many spa options about so shop around for good deals.
A nice free attraction is the Redwood forest on the edge of town. There's a large selection of splendid walks amongst the massive Californian pines, some more than 100 years old.
Since you're on this side of town, a nice drive towards Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake) and Lake Rotokakahi (Green Lake) will take you to the Buried Village. A remarkably well-preserved Maori village that was completely covered after a volcanic eruption in 1886. You can wander amongst the excavation site, enter traditional homes as they once stood.
Also check out The Landing Cafe on Lake Tarawera, great food that's away from the usual tourist traps of Rotorua city.

Ambury regional park, Auckland
Ambury regional park, Auckland
It was early spring we visited Ambury Regional Park again, and wanted to see new born farm animals.
The following information is a copy from the website
Nestled on the shore of the Manukau Harbour, Ambury Regional Park is a working farm, an important education centre and a birdwatchers paradise with a volcanic history - all just 15km from central Auckland.
The park sits on ash-covered lava flows from Mangere Mountain and has views across the harbour to the Manukau Heads and Waitakere Ranges. It takes its name from the Ambury Milk Company, which milked cows and ran a town milk supply farm here from 1893-1965. Free to wander through the park but please leave gates as you find them.
The farm animals at Ambury are family favourites. You will see sheep, goats, cows, pigs, pet lambs (in spring), a horse, chickens, turkeys, rabbits and peacocks. Grassy lanes between the animal enclosures help you get up close to the animals safely.

Exploring Hawkes Bay, New Zealand - Arataki Honey, Clifton & More - North Island Roadtrip Vlog Day 9
Day 9 of our 42-day trip around the North Island of New Zealand was a work and exploration day in Napier, Hawkes Bay. We started the day with some work and then headed out for the afternoon. First stop, lunch at The Black Shed.
From there we left Napier and headed to Havelock North to check out Arataki Honey before making our way down to Clifton. As the sun was going down, we came back to Napier and got dinner at Indigo Indian Restaurant again and had our minds blown with more amazing Indian cuisine. Finally, we enjoyed the night lights around Napier, including the beautifully lit Tom Parker Fountain.
We stayed at the Nautilus Hotel for the duration of our time in Napier. The Nautilus is an absolutely beautiful hotel, I can't recommend it enough. Enjoy!

White Water Rafting in Queenstown – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 137: Today we are white water rafting in Queenstown on the Shotover River! Join us for this wild grade 3-4 adventure with Rafting Queenstown – one of the awesome adrenaline activities in Queenstown.
Yesterday - Day 136 ➜
Tomorrow – Day 138 ➜
30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
This afternoon, we check in at the Queenstown Rafting office in Queenstown on Shotover St then get picked up to hit the Queenstown Rafting base along the Shotover River. There, we get geared up before being taken on the dreaded Skippers Road at the Skippers Canyon. Yes, this is the third time we are doing an activity down one of the world’s most dangerous roads!
Once we get to the launch point to go white water rafting on the Shotover River, we have a safety briefing then divide into rafts. White water rafting is a team sport so we all have to work together to make sure we get over the rapids in one piece. The Shotover River is also one of the top New Zealand white water rafting locations.
The first part of the Shotover River is gentle giving us time to practice paddle commands with our guide before hitting the grade 3 rapids. As we go along the stunning Shotover River, the rapids get bigger, scarier and more extreme!
Our finale ends with a 172m long tunnel leading to a waterfall! Then it’s out of the rafts and to the cafe where they have a sauna. That was such an awesome place to go white water rafting in New Zealand!
So what do you think of Queenstown white water rafting? Would you go rafting in Queenstown? LUK in the comments!
