1. Wairoa Museum Wairoa
Te Wairoa is a deserted village located close to the shore of Lake Tarawera in New Zealand's North Island. It was a Māori and European settlement founded in 1848 by the Revd Seymour Mills Spencer where visitors would stay on their way to visit the Pink and White Terraces. The village was destroyed by the eruption of the volcano Mount Tarawera on June 10, 1886. 120 people died in the eruption, many of them in other villages closer to the volcano.The site of one of these villages was instrumental in the recent rediscovery of the Pink and White Terrace locations.The Buried Village is open to the public and shows the excavated ruins of the village, recovered relics on display in a museum and the history of the eruption. Today we are heading to the Northern Hawke’s Bay region and its central town, Wairoa! Wairoa is a quaint riverside and seaside town in New Zealand and an awesome pit stop on any Hawke’s Bay road trip. We’re about to find out what there is to do in Wairoa by spending the day exploring Wairoa!

Despite the rainy weather we find loads of things to do in Wairoa on a rainy day. First we hit the Wairoa Museum, we visit the iconic Wairoa Lighthouse, and visit the Long River Gallery – a Wairoa art gallery. On top of all that we eat delicious food at the Eastend Cafe in Wairoa. Then we try one of the best fish & chips in New Zealand that we’ve tasted at the Tui Takeaways. If you’re only going to try New Zealand fish & chips in one place, make it Tui’s in Wairoa!

The Mahia Peninsula is in the northern Hawke’s Bay region famous for its New Zealand beaches, surf, views and, in our opinion, The Beach Cafe in Mahia, because it’s our saviour from the wind.

Mahia makes an awesome North Island road trip when making your way between Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay! At the end of the day, we arrive in Gisborne and check out the Dome Cinema, an awesome boutique cinema in Gisborne.

In May 2018, I visited Taradale, one of Hawke’s Bay region’s suburbs and stayed there for one week.

Taradale is a small peaceful and picturesque town with the friendliest people I have ever met. They are spending a beautiful life just like their town. The historic culture of Maori people is also highlighted by the mountain of Otarara which gives a unique view of the town. Once you reach the mountain, you can experience the beauty of the whole city. The most famous wineries of New Zealand such as Mission State and Church Road wineries are also located in this calm and beautiful city, Taradale.

It’s such a calm and quiet area giving a different kind of experience for travelers.

People are so friendly and helpful in times of need. While there may be so much more to see, this video covers a fair bit of it.
