Mendenhall Glacier & Mount Roberts Tram
This tour visits Juneau's hallmark attractions, the Mendenhall Glacier and Mount Roberts Tramway. Your journey begins with a narrated tour of downtown Juneau and the city's highlights as you make your way to Mendenhall Valley - home of the mighty Mendenhall. Upon arriving at the Mendenhall, your guide will point out many of the attractions that you'll want to see during your approximate 1 1/2-hour stay. Included is scenic Photo Point and the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center where you'll want to take time to watch the short film about the glacier and the 37 other glaciers that make up the Juneau Icefield. The area boasts several self-guided scenic trails that allow you to learn about the role the glacier had in carving the landscape. Each of these trails offers a different view of the Mendenhall through trees or along the shores of Mendenhall Lake. Next, you're off to Mount Roberts Tramway and it's terminus at the 1800 foot level of Mount Roberts above downtown Juneau. Enjoy a stroll along an alpine trail and gaze at the vistas and distant waterways and islands. Visit the Nature Center and learn about the surrounding alpine ecosystem and be sure to stop by the raptor center. Inside the tram's main building you'll enjoy Native arts & crafts and goods for sale. Downstairs in the theater you can view a local documentary or have a snack at the Tram's cafe'. The Tram will always be your last stop, so you can either return to your coach for the transit back to your ship at the designated time, or spend as much time on the mountain as your port time allows. Note: This tour operates under a special use permit issued by the U.S. Forest Service. Wheelchair access may be limited - for details, please consult your Shore Excursion staff before booking.
Alaska Travel Adventures: Historic Gold Mining & Panning Adventure in Juneau
Catch gold fever and experience what it was like to seek your fortune during Gold Rush days! Learn to pan for gold (and keep all you find!), and discover Juneau's colorful mining heritage for yourself.
Head out with a prospector/guide in authentic 19th-century dress for a historical tour of Juneau including the state capitol. Then, turn up the road to Gold Creek and Last Chance Basin, where Joe Juneau and Richard Harris struck gold in 1880.
In a beautiful, secluded setting near a waterfall alongside Gold Creek — only accessible under our tour's special permit — your prospector shows you how gold panning is done. Then, it's your turn, as you learn how to expertly work the pan with helpful tips and advice. You can choose to pan in the creek, or in the waist-high demonstration trough. Every one of all ages and those with limited mobility can learn how to pan and capture the full gold-rush experience. You're guaranteed to find gold! And, all that glitters is yours to keep.
Around you are remnants of the original buildings of the Alaska-Juneau Mining Company, which at the height of production was the largest operation of its type in the world. You'll learn about the mining techniques that were used, and more about the quest for gold that is so much a part of Alaska's history.
Take home a souvenir Orelove Brothers Gold Claim Certificate, all the gold you find, and an appreciation of what is was like to seek your fortune in the wilds of Alaska more than a century ago.

Alaska at War
The Alaska at War film project was an effort to document events of World War II in Alaska. It was funded by the Alaska Legislature through the Alaska Historical Commission and was supported by the Alaska Historical Society and private subscription. The production work was performed by aurora Films, assisted by a citizen's advisory committee. The production Alaska at War was first shown in public on Alaska Day, October 18th 1986.
This collection was deposited in the University of Alaska Anchorage, Archives and Special collections Department by the Alaska Historical Commission in 1987. Additional papers were presented to the archives by the Alaska Air Command Historian's Office in 1989; and by the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation, in 1990. The University of Alaska Anchorage offered these records to the Alaska State Archives July of 2010. Copyright to the production is retained by the State of Alaska. Reproduction of some photographs, oral history recordings, and film out takes requires the permission of the State of Alaska, Aurora Films, the interviewee, writer, or library of origin.
A special thanks goes to Damon Stuebner of the Alaska State Library, Historical Collections for his technical assistance.

A Fisherman's Perspective of the Individual Fishing Quota System in Alaska 10/12/12
Author Dean Adams presented A Fisherman's Perspective of the Individual Fishing Quota System in Alaska - Before, During, and After Implementation as part of Western Washington University's Huxley College of the Environment Speaker Series at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2012 in Communications Facility Room 125 on the Western campus.
The initiation of the Individual Fishing Quota system in 1995 marked the end of the derby fisheries for the halibut and sablefish longline fisheries in Alaska. Adams' career in commercial longline fishing spanned the derby years and extended into the IFQ fishery. The IFQ system, a radical departure from traditional fishery management, has resulted in extended fishing seasons, minimized waste and bycatch of target and nontarget species, improved safety for the fishing industry, and improved food quality.
As a consequence, the economic value of the resource has increase substantially.
Adams participated in the federal fisheries management process leading up to the implementation of the IFQ system both individually and as a representative for the Fishing Vessel Owners Association, a Seattle-based group of owner/operators in the Alaska longline fishery. He will tell the story from his perspective, which will include discussion of problems associated with the IFQ system -- some anticipated, and some, not.
The speaker series is held by Western's Huxley College of the Environment to bring together the environmentally minded community and other interested members of the WWU and Bellingham communities. Speakers address topics of contemporary environmental concern in the region and the world.
For more information, please contact the main office of Huxley College of the Environment, at (360) 650-3520.
Western's Huxley College of the Environment is one of the oldest environmental colleges in the nation and a recognized national leader in producing the next generation of environmental stewards. The College's academic programs reflect a broad view of the physical, biological, social and cultural world. This innovative and interdisciplinary approach makes Huxley unique. The College has earned international recognition for the quality of its programs.

Tristan da Cunha (), colloquially Tristan, is both a remote group of volcanic islands in the south Atlantic Ocean and the main island of that group. It is the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world which lies proximately 1,511 miles (2,432 km) off the coast of Cape Town in South Africa, 1,343 miles (2,161 km) from Saint Helena and 2,166 miles (3,486 km) off the coast from the Falkland Islands. The territory consists of the main island, Tristan da Cunha, which has a north–south length of 11.27 kilometres (7.00 mi) and an area of 98 square kilometres (38 sq mi), and the smaller, uninhabited Nightingale Islands and the wildlife reserves of Inaccessible and Gough islands. As of October 2018, the main island has 250 permanent inhabitants who all carry British Overseas Territories citizenship. The other islands are uninhabited, except for the personnel of a weather station on Gough Island.
Tristan da Cunha is part of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. This includes Saint Helena and also near-equatorial Ascension Island, which lies some 1,741 miles (2,802 km) to the north of Tristan. There is no airstrip of any kind on the main island meaning the only way of traveling in and out of Tristan is by boat, a six-day trip from South Africa.

SUMMARY
=======
Katmai National Park and Preserve is an American national park and preserve in southern Alaska, notable for the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes and for its brown bears. The park and preserve encompass 4,093,077 acres (6,395.43 sq mi; 16,564.09 km2), which is between the sizes of Connecticut and New Jersey. Most of the national park—more than 3,922,000 acres (6,128.12 sq mi; 15,871.77 km2)—is a designated wilderness area where all hunting is banned. The park is named after Mount Katmai, its centerpiece stratovolcano. The park is located on the Alaska Peninsula, across from Kodiak Island, with headquarters in nearby King Salmon, about 290 miles (470 km) southwest of Anchorage. The area was first designated a national monument in 1918 to protect the area around the major 1912 volcanic eruption of Novarupta, which formed the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, a 40-square-mile (100 km2), 100-to-700-foot-deep (30 to 213 m) pyroclastic flow. The park includes as many as 18 individual volcanoes, seven of which have been active since 1900.
Initially designated because of its volcanic history, the monument was left undeveloped and largely unvisited until the 1950s. The monument and surrounding lands became appreciated for their wide variety of wildlife, including an abundance of sockeye salmon and the brown bears that feed upon them. After a series of boundary expansions, the present national park and preserve were established in 1980 under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act.

SUMMARY
=======
Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is an American national park located in Southeast Alaska west of Juneau. President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the area around Glacier Bay a national monument under the Antiquities Act on February 25, 1925. Subsequent to an expansion of the monument by President Jimmy Carter in 1978, the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) enlarged the national monument by 523,000 acres (817.2 sq mi; 2,116.5 km2) on December 2, 1980, and created Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. The national preserve encompasses 58,406 acres (91.3 sq mi; 236.4 km2) of public land to the immediate northwest of the park, protecting a portion of the Alsek River with its fish and wildlife habitats, while allowing sport hunting.
Glacier Bay became part of a binational UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, and was inscribed as a Biosphere Reserve in 1986. The National Park Service undertook an obligation to work with Hoonah and Yakutat Tlingit Native American organizations in the management of the protected area in 1994. The park and preserve cover a total of 3,223,384 acres (5,037 sq mi; 13,045 km2), with 2,770,000 acres (4,328 sq mi; 11,210 km2) being designated as a wilderness area.

The Great Gildersleeve: Leroy's Pet Pig / Leila's Party / New Neighbor Rumson Bullard
The Great Gildersleeve (1941--1957), initially written by Leonard Lewis Levinson, was one of broadcast history's earliest spin-off programs. Built around Throckmorton Philharmonic Gildersleeve, a character who had been a staple on the classic radio situation comedy Fibber McGee and Molly, first introduced on Oct. 3, 1939, ep. #216. The Great Gildersleeve enjoyed its greatest success in the 1940s. Actor Harold Peary played the character during its transition from the parent show into the spin-off and later in a quartet of feature films released at the height of the show's popularity.
On Fibber McGee and Molly, Peary's Gildersleeve was a pompous windbag who became a consistent McGee nemesis. You're a haa-aa-aa-aard man, McGee! became a Gildersleeve catchphrase. The character was given several conflicting first names on Fibber McGee and Molly, and on one episode his middle name was revealed as Philharmonic. Gildy admits as much at the end of Gildersleeve's Diary on the Fibber McGee and Molly series (Oct. 22, 1940).
He soon became so popular that Kraft Foods—looking primarily to promote its Parkay margarine spread — sponsored a new series with Peary's Gildersleeve as the central, slightly softened and slightly befuddled focus of a lively new family.
Premiering on August 31, 1941, The Great Gildersleeve moved the title character from the McGees' Wistful Vista to Summerfield, where Gildersleeve now oversaw his late brother-in-law's estate and took on the rearing of his orphaned niece and nephew, Marjorie (originally played by Lurene Tuttle and followed by Louise Erickson and Mary Lee Robb) and Leroy Forester (Walter Tetley). The household also included a cook named Birdie. Curiously, while Gildersleeve had occasionally spoken of his (never-present) wife in some Fibber episodes, in his own series the character was a confirmed bachelor.
In a striking forerunner to such later television hits as Bachelor Father and Family Affair, both of which are centered on well-to-do uncles taking in their deceased siblings' children, Gildersleeve was a bachelor raising two children while, at first, administering a girdle manufacturing company (If you want a better corset, of course, it's a Gildersleeve) and then for the bulk of the show's run, serving as Summerfield's water commissioner, between time with the ladies and nights with the boys. The Great Gildersleeve may have been the first broadcast show to be centered on a single parent balancing child-rearing, work, and a social life, done with taste and genuine wit, often at the expense of Gildersleeve's now slightly understated pomposity.
Many of the original episodes were co-written by John Whedon, father of Tom Whedon (who wrote The Golden Girls), and grandfather of Deadwood scripter Zack Whedon and Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog).
The key to the show was Peary, whose booming voice and facility with moans, groans, laughs, shudders and inflection was as close to body language and facial suggestion as a voice could get. Peary was so effective, and Gildersleeve became so familiar a character, that he was referenced and satirized periodically in other comedies and in a few cartoons.
