Tiger attacks: Tiger mauls zookeeper to death at Britain’s Hamerton Park Zoo - TomoNews
HUNTINGDON, ENGLAND — A tiger killed a zookeeper on Monday in an incident the zoo described as a “freak accident”.
Zookeeper Rosa King, 33, was mauled to death by one of the Hamerton Zoo Park’s four tigers when the big cat somehow got into a part of an enclosure where she was working, local newspaper Cambridge News reported.
Witnesses said staff at the zoo near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire tried to distract the beast by throwing meat into the enclosure and shouting. But it didn’t work.
Families visiting the zoo said they feared there was a tiger on the loose and so they ran for their lives. The zoo said the tiger did not escape from the tiger enclosure at any time.
The zoo said King’s death was a “freak accident” and it was investigating how the tiger managed to get into the same part of the enclosure as her at the same time.
Relatives of the zookeeper said she loved tigers and her death was a tragedy, according to the Sun.

The Whale - A History (In Our Time)
Melvyn Bragg and guests Steve Jones, Bill Amos and Eleanor Weston discuss the evolutionary history of the whale. The ancestor of all whales alive today was a small, land-based mammal with cloven hoofs, perhaps like a pig or a big mole. How this creature developed into the celebrated leviathan of the deep is one of the more extraordinary stories in the canon of evolution. The whale has undergone vast changes in size, has moved from land to water, lost its legs and developed specialised features such as filter feeding and echo location. How it achieved this is an exemplar of how evolution works and how natural selection can impose extreme changes on the body shape and abilities of living things. How the story of the whales was pieced together also reveals the various forms of evidence - from fossils to molecules - that we now use to understand the ancestry of life on Earth.Steve Jones is Professor of Genetics at University College London; Eleanor Weston is a mammalian palaeontologist at the Natural History Museum, London; Bill Amos is Professor of Evolutionary Genetics at Cambridge University.

Dramatic rescue of beached baby whale in Australia
Subscribe here:
A baby humpback whale that was stranded on a beach on Australia's Gold Coast for two days was freed in a dramatic rescue. Staff from Sea World led the rescue efforts after the animal, which weighs between 15 and 20 tonnes, became stuck on Palm Beach, south of Brisbane on Tuesday. After five failed attempts to free the animal, a special harness allowed a motorboat to pull the whale off the beach and back out to sea to the cheers of rescuers. Report by Sarah Kerr.
