WhirlyBall comes to Maple Grove
It's a sport that will make you scratch your head at first.
Extreme bumper cars is what I would call it, said Beth Leith.
Combine bumper cars with a bit of lacrosse and basketball and there you have WhirlyBall.
On a scale of 1--10, it's about an 11, everyone had a really great time, said Beth Leith, who played the game when she accompanied a Habitat for Humanity Youth Group on a trip to Chicago. I took a lot of pictures and looking back through those, there's smiles on everybody's face. It's a competitive sport, but really it's just fun.
Little did she know a few years after the trip, her husband -- council member Phil Leith -- would be voting to bring the sport to Maple Grove.
It's exciting, said Phil Leith. It's new to Maple Grove and new to state of Minnesota and brings redevelopment to that area.
Monday night the Maple Grove City Council approved the site plan for WhirlyBall to go into the Mann Theatre building. The space will include a laser tag area, a sports bar, and two whirlyball arenas. Owner Nick Lambrecht thinks the sport will draw people in.
It's something that the first time you hear about it you scratch your head and furrow your brow and kinda wonder and it sounds strange. That's a common reaction, but another reaction is people have an absolute blast when they play it, said Lambrecht.
The facility will also have four meeting rooms and offer corporate packages for businesses to work on team building.
Minneapolis-St. Paul has a great corporate presence and that's a significant driver for a lot of WhirlyBall business, said Lambrecht.
WhirlyBall is in 13 other metro cities and attracts a wide variety of age groups, so owner Nick Lambrecht thinks it will catch on fast.
So how much will it cost to play? You can rent out an arena for a group of 10 or more for $190. Or you can walk in and play for about $11 per half hour. WhirlyBall hopes to open in Maple Grove by late August or September.

Business Matters: Haskell's opens in Maple Grove
Among its cadre of businesses, Maple Grove is now home to the largest liquor store in the state.
On December 20, Haskell's opened its 13th store in the metro, a 20,000-square-foot store in The Grove, next to Target and near the Maple Grove Hospital.
I think you would have to go to Chicago to find a footprint bigger than this 20,000-square-foot store, said John Farrell, Jr., chairman of Haskell's.
The Maple Grove location, which will employ between 30 - 40 people, features a wine wall with room for more than 15,000 bottles of wine, a walk-through beer cooler, and space for wine tastings and classes.
This is a totally new formula for us, definitely a lot more square footage, than all of our normal stores, said Ted Farrell, president of Haskell's.
The expanding market of craft beers and spirits helped drive the decision to go with a bigger store, Farrell said. It's more than double the space of Haskell's other locations.
You're just seeing the whole liquor industry expand, and so your store has to expand to kind of keep up with that because there's so many offerings, said Farrell.

Maple Grove taproom on track for Labor Day opening
OMNI Brewing Co. in Maple Grove is on a fast track to being complete and open for business by Labor Day. In just a few weeks, their Kickstarter fundraising campaign raised $25,000. They hope to raise another $15,000.
We don't know most of the names on Kickstarter, so these are not just our friends backing us, this is the city of Maple Grove and Brooklyn Park, said co-owner Steve Hayes.
Speaking of money, OMNI will save a lot of cash on its electric bill. Eighty-six solar panels on the roof help power the building.
It's going to generate 20,000 kilowatt hours per year, co-owner Zack Ward says. This to our knowledge is the biggest one, and this to our knowledge, is definitely one of the few in the state.
OMNI says they hope the taproom becomes a destination for people in the northwest suburbs.
Maple Grove recently approved the sale of growlers on Sunday. The folks at OMNI say that will help business. The company is also talking with city officials about getting approval for a food truck.

Anoka Co. Takes Part in Statewide Homeless Count
BLAINE, Minn. -- Streets, shelters, parking lots, tents or a temporary stay on the couch with friends are what some call home in Anoka County.
Each year, a one-day survey is done to find out how many people are without a permanent place to live.
Last year, more than 794 people were counted as homeless in the county.
Hope Inman, a case worker with the Salvation Army in Coon Rapids helped organize volunteers to do a point-in-time count of the homeless this week. Those totals are used to apply for state and federal funding and to plan housing projects.
“We live in Minnesota, and it's cold and we just want to make sure everybody has a safe place, a stable place, and everybody deserves a home,” Inman said.
“We’re looking at maybe some of the typical places and untypical places you might see people … under a bridge, parks, things like that … also looking at stores, the mall and just trying to find people that might be hanging out looking for a warm place,” she said.
The count ended at the Hope Church in Blaine where hundreds collect meals from a food shelf each week.
Volunteer Marcus Cooper with the Minnesota Adult and Teen Challenge program said he has a personal connection to helping others.
“I was homeless myself so I know how the struggle is ... (I try to) give them a hope that they can come out of that,” Cooper said.
Tom Scarborough of Fridley said he also knows what it's like to be homeless and showed appreciation for the volunteers and donations.
(Doing the point-in-time count is) a great way to go about it,” he said.
Cooper and Scarborough both said they've seen addictions lead to homelessness but offered encouragement.
“It's possible (to recover). And the help is out there, and you have to do whatever it takes to find the help and you can't do it on your own,” Scarborough said.
“If there's any negatives, try to turn a negative into a positive and work. Work hard,” Cooper said.
Inman said other reasons people become homeless can be the housing market, or a crime on someone's record that may even be decades old, preventing them from finding work or housing.

Starkey named Maple Grove boys hockey coach
He was one of the first star players in the Maple Grove High School boys hockey program. Now, Tom Starkey will become the second head coach of the Crimson.
Starkey, a 2000 Maple Grove graduate, takes over for Gary Stefano, the original head coach in the program. The hire comes after a controversy-filled season that included an off-ice incident, which led to player suspensions.
Starkey was an assistant at Wayzata High School from 2009-2011 and played college hockey at the Air Force Academy.
