Wreck of the Chikuzen || British Virgin Islands 2018
Wreck of the Chikuzen - amazing diving site located between Tortola and Anegada. The dive is about 75 feet deep and because it is literally miles from anywhere, the wreck attracts a wide array of marine life.
Although the wreck has changed after hurricane Irma - it has broken apart - it is still an amazing dive with lots of marine life! ????????
Chikuzen Shipwreck - BVI
The Chikuzen is a 246' Japanese refrigeration vessel sunk in 1981, about 12 miles northwest of Virgin Gorda and south of Anegada in the BVI. It's in the middle of open water and therefore very attractive to pelagics such as large rays and sharks. The yellow mooring buoy was brand new (the former one had apparently gone missing and was not there the last time Bastiaan had been to this site). Highly recommend the Catamaran Mimbaw, which provided dive equipment, PADI dive instructor, and access to the best dive sites in the BVI during our week stay on the boat (mimbaw.com).

Sailing & scuba in the British Virgin Islands (BVI)
Sailing the British Virgin Islands (BVI) in October, 2010, we dove two ship wrecks--the Rhone & the Chikuzen--and visited Norman Island, Cooper Island, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Soba Rock, Great Dog, Scrub Island, Little Jost Van Dyke and Jost Van Dyke. SCUBA dive the Wreck of the Chikuzen - North of BVI
The Wreck of the Chikuzen - North of BVI. Scuba diving and sailing on a SailDives excursion this video combines 2 dives at the same dive site. Hurricane Igor was haunting the crew, but we altered the itinerary to avoid contact and had a great opportunity to sail out to this open ocean dive site. The sail to the dive site was a bit further than most others but was a great dive. Uncountable numbers of fish, Giant Barracuda, Eagle Rays and large open access points make this a must do dive. Specialized Scuba offers all inclusive, crewed catamaran ail and dive trips to 4 locations in the Caribbean: Belize, Bequia, Tortola and Tobago.

Wreck of the Chikuzen
Chikuzen was a 246 foot Korean refrigerator vessel based in St. Maarten to service big Japanese fishing fleets. It was early in 1981 when a hurricane was approaching St. Maarten.
The government told the owners to move the decrepit ship so it wouldn't sink in the harbor or damage the docks. The owners thought this would be a good chance to get rid of the ship once and for all. So they set it on fire and sent it adrift, hoping it would sink just offshore. The plan went wrong and Chikuzen kept floating towards the Marina Cay area. Yacht and diving companies feared for Marina Cay's anchorage so local operators tried to fend off the ship with dive boats. This was unsuccessful. Finally, ocean going tugs were called from St. Croix and Antigua. When they arrived they were able to attach a line to pull the ship away from the islands. The line broke, badly injuring a crew member who had to be airlifted to the nearest hospital. They decided to call it a day and let nature take its course. The smoldering Chikuzen sunk about 7 1/2 miles northwest off Tortola. The wreck is too far out for most local shore based operators to get to. Cuan Law is the only dive boat who regularly visits this site. Diving the Chikuzen is not always possible because of its exposed location but this is a wonderful dive if the conditions are right.
She now serves her new purpose attracting an assortment of both pelagic and reef fish and is an excellent wreck for almost any level diver. The wreck of the Chikuzen rests in 75 feet of water far from any reef, attracting marine life like an oasis in the desert. The ship is on its port side with the starboard rail reaching up to about 50 feet. Except for the pilothouse, most of the ship is intact, with three large cargo holds that can be entered through open hatches. The hull is well covered with coral and sponge growth. The possibility of encountering big pelagics such as sharks and rays is always high. In fact, one of the few Whale Shark encounters in the British Virgin Islands occurred here during a Cuan Law dive

Wreck of the Chikuzen 2 months after hurricane Irma!
Dive BVI & Sunchaser Scuba went out to check the condition of the wreck of the Chikuzen following hurricane Irma. The visibility was still a little cloudy but we found so much marine life. The wreck is now in two pieces with the stern & the bow intact but now split in the middle - which is good for us divers as it means more places for fish to hide & it's great to see the inside of the ship!
