Trams in Cologne, Germany - Cologne Stadtbahn
The Cologne Stadtbahn is a light rail system in the German city of Cologne, including several surrounding cities (Bergisch-Gladbach, Bonn, Bornheim, Brühl, Frechen, Hürth, Leverkusen-Schlebusch, Wesseling). The term Stadtbahn denotes a system that encompasses elements of trams as well as an underground railway network (U-Bahn) and interurban rail, even including three lines that are licensed as heavy rail and used by freight trains as well as Stadtbahn vehicles. Two of these lines connect the Cologne Stadtbahn to the Bonn Stadtbahn. These lines (16 and 18) are jointly operated by both cities' transport authorities, resulting in both systems and the lines connecting them sometimes collectively referred to as Stadtbahn Rhein-Sieg. The Cologne Stadtbahn is operated by the Kölner Verkehrsbetriebe (KVB) and the Bonn Stadtbahn is operated by the Stadtwerke Bonn (SWB - City of Bonn Utilities Division). The KVB and SWB are members of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS - Rhein-Sieg Transit Authority), formed in 1987 to consolidate the transit authorities in the metropolitan Cologne area and operate a joint fare structure. There are 38 underground stations, 4 more are currently under construction.

It went all too fast? You want the details? No problem.
Here are our recommendations in order of appearance:
00:05 Kölner Dom
No trip to Cologne is complete without a visit of the intimidatingly monumental Roman Catholic church locals call simply der Dom. The view from the top is probabaly the best you can get. And the treasure chamber underneath it shows a remarkable collection of Christian art. More: koelner-dom.de
00:17 Triangle Turm Köln
The viewing platform of this office tower on the „wrong side“ of the river Rhine has the second best view over the city. It’s 3 Euros to get up there and worth every cent. More: koelntriangle.de
00:19 Rheinauhafen
This former harbour facility today is an architecural highlight with plenty of exciting office and industrial buildings. It makes for a lovely stroll along the river Rhine.
00:22 Rheinpromenade
Talking about lovely strolls: The Rheinpromenade is where the locals love to hang out and chill on weekends. Nice cafés and bars invite you to have a coffee while taking in the view.
00:25 Kranhäuser
The landmark of the Rheinauhafen and most fascinating office and apartment buildings of the area. Very instagrammy!
00:28 The Dropped Cone
The installation by pop art artist Claes Oldenburg on top of the Neumarkt Galerie Köln arrived in 2011 all the way from San Francisco. It somehow symbolizes the humour and self-mockery that makes Colognes residents so loveable, like...
00:29 Jupp Schmitz statue
...their love for moustaches. One of their most beloved entertainer and singer Jupp Schmitz was famous for his facial hair. And got a statue at a lovely little square downtown.
00:31 Kölner Karneval around Zülpicher Straße
The arguably biggest carnival party of Germany takes place in Cologne with Zülpicher Straße being its madness center. Be there from thursday bevor Shrove Monday until tuesday. And remember: What happens on Karneval stays at Karneval. Needless to say: We arrived weeks too early. Damn it.
00:36 Das Mäuerchen
This lovely piece of wall is a very popular preparty hangout among the young crowd. Get a beer on the corner and sit down at the wall before heading to the numerous bars and clubs next to it.
00:38 Früh am Dom
It doesn’t get much more traditional than this famous restaurant. Taste the home-brewed beer and don’t be surprised: They will keep bringing you more beer unless you put the coaster on your empty glass. A brilliant custom. More: Früh Kölsch
00:44 Roman of HOLZCITY
The soil on which Cologne was built is as surprising and fascinating as the city itself. In fact, you can’t dig a hole in the ground without finding anything from the Roman Empire. When the loveable owner of this wood store found a Roman skeleton underneath his property, he decided to leave it there, founded a little museum and show it to those who are interested.
00:46 Kölner Philharmonie
Yes, the philharmonics were built underground. Pretty weird. As noone is allowed to walk over the square that’s above during performances. On thursdays at 12:30PM they have Philharmonie-Lunch, a free concert lasting 30mins. More: koelner-philharmonie.de
00:49 Stiefel
One of the many cool indie type pubs of the city where you can play foosball – it’s a thing there. No idea why. More: stiefelkneipe.de
00:51 RheinEnergieSTADION
The local football club 1. FC Köln had its big times. But mostly not-so-big times. Nonetheless, one of Germanys most famous strikers is a son of the city and this club: Lukas Podolski. Known for constantly smiling and joking. And occasionally scoring. Locals call him Prince Poldi.
00:55 Schokoladenmuseum
Okay, Lindt chocolate is Swiss. But still they have a very famous chocolate museum in Cologne. And locals love it. How couldn’t you love a museum where you can eat as much chocolate as you want? More: schokoladenmuseum.de
00:58 Love Locks Hohenzollernbrücke
This „love locks on bridge railings“ thing is said to have started in Florence, Italy. Cologne was the first city in Germany to adopt this custom. And it is remarkable how many locks can fit on one balustrade. Again: very instagrammy!
